I know there is a thread for this statement but I felt it was relevant to the point I'm about to make about RoC. Now granted I haven't seen the A-Team movie yet obviously but man just from the trailer it looks cooler than RoC. I remember seeing the RoC trailer and from the get go it looked corny and then finally seeing it only confirmed what I already knew x10.

Yeah. Despite the fact that there was a lot of futuristic weapondry, the whole idea of Cobra was grounded in the idea of a charismatic, disillusioned American piecing together mercenaries and people disillusioned with the American dream and American politics, and forming a militant terrorist group.
That's pretty realistic... You forgot the comic, which was pretty darn influential to the mythos. That was more than just a commercial. It was just a commercial at it's inception, and it kinda ended that way too, but in the broader middle, when it was most successful and when the stories most fans love were published, it was far more. Well, his and Sommers'... I didn't read the comic when it first came out, but very recently picked up the trades and started reading those. I just finished the 3rd and started the 4th. I watched the toon growing up and recently showed it to my 5 year old on dvd, I've got the whole thing. Now I enjoy the toon. I enjoyed the Devil's Due comic as well, and I enjoy what I've read of the Marvel books too, so don't take what I'm about to say out of context. Larry Hama himself has said that he never considered himself a writer. He also has said that he would start a story with out an ending in mind and let the story progress naturaly on it's own. It shows. IMHO the cartoon holds up much better than the comic, and the writing is superior as well. At times the comic is downright silly and aimed at kids just as much if not more than the toon, and definately cornier and less realistic than the movie. Now where did your interpetaion of where the whole idea of Cobra come from, cause it wasn't the comic? Bludd, in it for the money. Zartan, in it for the money. Destro, arms dealer, in it for the money. Firefly in it for the money. Storm Shadow, looking for the Hard Master's killer. Baroness, disillusioned by her brother's death. Cobra Commander's a meglomaniac that wants to rule the world. They are all pretty stereotypical kiddie show villians, fighting amongst each other to the point that their human flaws and inability to function as a team is the only thing that stands in the way of their ability to thwart GI Joe. Cobra is unlike any real world terrorist group. It might have looked that way when you were a kid reading those books, but GI Joe has always been, and will always be, a fantasy story designed for kids to sell toys. It isn't realistic to anyone with half a brain that can see it for what it is. Good clean fun. And I wouldn't have it any other way. |

I think most of the griping on the "this movie sucked" side, is that it wasnt the same. Duke was different, Ripcord was different etc....dont confuse "bad movie" with "different take".
There were things in the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man that were deviations of the comic book and lore-but, they were well written, with great effects, fantastic acting and overall just good movies. If ROC had nothing to do with GI Joe and was just a new take on a Para-Military action film would you still think it was good?... At this point it doesnt matter, you will NEVER get an unbiased answer here. Half of the people comming up with the good points of this film are still on cloud 9 because GI Joe made it to the big screen and it was watchable. The other half- like me, think it could have gone straight to dvd. So lets forget about black Ripcord or Snake Eyes with lips, because that is only a SLIVER of what was wrong this movie. The acting was HORRIBLE and the only thing even worse than that was the CGI. I just wish people would disconnect from it as a GI Joe movie and look at it as a regular film. THEN cast your vote...pound for pound were the effects half as good as Star Trek's? Was the acting as believable and enjoyable to watch as Salvation? It reminds of the skit on Family Guy when the guy was arguing with the donkey that Kevin Bacon was the star of Footloose...just because it made money doesnt make it good and just because a bunch of G.I. Joe fans went to see it doesnt make it a good. I went with 2 girls to see this movie, one is a 26 year old hairstylist and the other is a 30 year old teacher..BOTH liked Star Trek, Wolverine and Terminator, BOTH know NOTHING about G.I. Joe and I had to beg both of them to please not leave the theatre and just stay till the end. They didnt care if it was G.I. Joe or if it was Fried Green Tomatoes...they just were pissed they wasted 10 bucks and 2 hrs on a bad movie. |

Ask and you shall receive.
It's the same people in both threads, no need for two.

Thank you to the Mod who merged the threads. Good call in my book.
Now we can keep all the moaning to one thread. Its funny how people were debating with the same person over two threads about the same thing......LMAO. Now we can do it on just one single all powerful debate thread and hopefully we never have to see or partake in another poll again!!!!!! EDIT: I am guessing that goes out to you TROYNOS..... it does seem simpler this way. Now I cannot wait until someone cries about the merging of the threads.....lol.
