James Cameron spends YEARS on his projects and all the others are A list directors (maybe not Mctiernan)...I can safely say none of them would be caught DEAD directing a sequel to a Stephen Sommers film...

Of course. You know, the basis for everything the general public knows about GI Joe?
The general public would most likely use the old cartoon as the point of reference for the movies. The toys might be second, and I hate to tell you the comics come in a distant, distant third. And when you really come down to it, MOST of the general public think of the flocked beard, kung fu grip GI Joe when they think of it at all. We're a minority. The movie really wasn't made for "us". |

When you come down to it, despite what you might think, the toys are really first and foremost what people think about. Regardless, the fact that the cartoon in retrospect was cheesy is not a logical basis to say that the movie should have been equally as dumb. That's like saying because you had mexican food that gave you the squirts once, you shouldn't try to eat at a fancy mexican joint because it's not likely to give you the same experience.

Sure, a lot of fanboys are going to say in there best nerd voice "NO, the comics are what got me into GI Joe! Only that can be the source", but it's bull$#it.....without the cartoon, the comic series would have ended about 120 issues before it did. The best episodes were the corniest. Cold Slither. Cobrathon. The Viper Cometh. Even the parallel universe one with Steeler and Baroness. If you want a "real" GI Joe watch something else with "real" military. Watch "The Kingdom" again if that's what you want. Me, I want GI Joe.

I want Sam Rami (with cameo by Bruce Campbell of course). Barring that Clint Eastwood.

If Sommers is off the movie, then McTiernan would be an acceptable replacement for me. Even Renny Harlin would be fine.

Fixed it for you.
When I was a little kid, sure the cartoons were the shiz. As I got older, my love of Joe evolved, and it became the fact that the Joes (as toys) were a paramilitary group who fought super-terrorists. As I got even older, I discovered the comics. So yeah, the comics kept me around as a fan. Regardless of what you think, and also whether or not the comic would or wouldn't have been around if not for the cartoon, the fact remains that the comic was around, and wasn't as cheesy, and was geared towards a more mature audience, and did draw fans in and those fans generally stuck around a lot longer than the fans drawn in by the cheesy cartoon. The point remains, the movie doesn't have to follow the cartoon any more than it has to follow the comic. You're saying we're wrong for wanting the movie to follow the comic, but simultaneously trying to argue that it should be as cheesy as the cartoon. The point your making is just illogical.
