Actually, the Baroness' comment on that site was borderline in my opinion, but it wasn't deleted.

Tarzan is one of those properties that's impossible to translate to film, especially with today's audience. Greystroke was probably the most accurate to the source material though. Sommers would be the last guy capable of making Tarzan acceptable to modern moviegoers.
If Sommers doesn't do GI Joe 2, I wonder who would tackle it? Certainly, not somebody too established unless they're allowed complete control. I'm not sure Hasbro would relinquish final cut again. We'll just get somebody barely competent, like Brett Ratner. In an ideal world, 1980s John McTiernen would direct it. But he's gone insane. I actually like the idea of Stallone coming in to direct. Let him play General Hawk. He adds star power, even if Hawk's only in it a bit. And he's a decent writer/director and loves action movies. He'd probably rely less on CGI as well. |

I both agree and disagree with you, thairestauranteur. Nothing here is meant as an insult, I just disagree.
I agree with you on Baroness' accent, the ugly SE suit, and the CGI being subpar. However, I find things like Hard Master to be overly nitpicky. He's a minor character at best with less than 5 lines or scenes. If it was a major character like the aforementioned Baroness or SE that would be understandable, but complaining about something so small makes it sound like you're trying to find things to hate. I don't believe you meant it that way, but that's how it comes off. Also, think you have the 80's Joes on a high pedestal there. Quoting yourself, "G.I.JOe represents what the 80’s is all about. It is up there with Arnold Schwartenegger in Predator or Terminator." I disagree with that a great deal. GI Joe represents what 80's TOYS are all about. Using decently written comics and very campy/corny cartoons to sell toys. That's what GI Joe embodies and this movie did just that. It's just as corny as the cartoon every was. I mean, have you ever looked at Fatal Fluffies? Their monsters with the word fluffy in their name and they have kitty eyes. We can't forget Sgt. Slaughter (Which I have admit that I'm sad he didn't make a cameo). And while I'm not a big comic fan, wasn't there Kitchen or Cleaning Vipers? While I would have prefered a different take on it than we got, I believe it has emboded the spirit of GI Joe from the 80's. Just not some of the best parts. As for weather Sommers directs another Joe movie, I'm indifferent. I enjoyed the movie. That said, I've hated everything else Sommers has made. So yeah, if he stays fine, if he doesn't it's not a big loss. All I ask is they correct Baroness (at least the accent), redo SE, and either feature Robocop in the next movie or get rid of the Accelerator suits. Any other problems I have with the movie is too nitpicky. Last edited by Blade Raider; 08-22-2009 at 02:37 AM.. |

It has been around 12 hours and I checked back on Sommer's site and they deleted my entry. They cut the whole message out like I had never posted anything!!!
The first time I put a comment on they just deleted the message and put this candy coated 2 thumbs up message in its place. Yet they left my name up. After looking at the messages on their board, I wonder how many people actually complain and then the mod does the same thing and puts a candy coated BS story in its place? It is a good question. I just hope they took my message to higher ups. What is the point of asking the question if they don't want honest answers? Surely they use the comments. Guess we'll all see what happens won't we?

The difference between my post and a lot of other people's here is that I didn't outright diss the guy and I didin't say his movies suck. Saying 'screw Tarzan, it's been done a million times' is borderline to you? You're just really sensitive or just plain upset that your comment got deleted.

Well, I posted my response onto that page.
Any of you guys who know me will know which clip I wrote. I just hope he listens to me. Go check it out before they delete my entry!!! Here is my letter: Michael says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. August 21, 2009 at 10:18 pm Dear Mr. Sommers, Please do not direct another G.I.Joe film. I don’t want to sound insulting but trust me it is not my intention. Perhaps it is what Hasbro wanted you to do so you had no control. I am not sure but I want to say the G.I.Joe RoC was not what I had hoped for. Kind of like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. I waited 16 years for that show and it BOMBED. I waited since 1984 for Joe. What is that 25 years? A long time. I feel Joe was pushed into an entirely wrong or unnecessary direction. The changes which were made were not better than what was already established; either in the comic or animation continuity. The CGI was not very good. The establishing shots of the PIT where you can see the Joe Harriers landing into the orifaices. You could see the sand dunes where completely CGI. Why not have some 2nd Unit guys really shoot some sand dunes? Then there was the FLAGG establishing shots. It was totally CGI and done badly. Even in Transformers 2 there was and aircraft carrier and they really filmed the ship!!! If Michael Bay can do it, you could have too. Again, 2nd Unit stuff. Tranformer Humvee Bumper. OK. Not very good. You hired Gerald Okamura for the Hard Master. I am sorry but the man is very overweight. I enjoyed him in Andy Sidaris films as the goof ball Fu. But do you realize that G.I.Joe embodies the spirit of the 1980’s. Sho Kosugi was the preiminent Ninja superstar back in those days. He should have been the Hard Master. She Kosugi is in the new film “Ninja Assassin” Please check it out and you will understand how little the ninjas were properly expressed in your film. You make Destro have a Scotish accent. GREAT!!!! I get it and I applaud that! However, the baroness was European in the comics and cartoon. You hired Sienna Miller. A beautiful English actress with a lovely accent! But you made her speak with a Amercian accent? I just don’t understand. I have been watching all the Sienna interviews and she speaks so lovely in her native British accent. Why change it? Why? She was great talking naturally! Poor Ray Park. I feel he was under utilized in the film. So many scenes are of a CGI Ray Park doing Spiderman flips around Humvees and whatnot. In the scenes where he is fighting storm shadow, you do all these jump cuts and you never really get to see true martial arts. Check out some crappy 80’s ninja movies and you will see what I mean. “Pray for Death”, “Revenge of the Ninja” and most importantly “Enter the Ninja.” Ray Park is a pretty darn good Martial Artist. What happened. Ray Park went on talking about he shot a break dancing scene. Sort of an homage to the old cartoon series. You cut that out. Bad. Park had to where that phony muscle plastic suit. Just like Michael Keaton in Batman. Everyone knows those muscles aren’t real. Those molded pectorals were just as phony as the sculpted mouth piece. You see, you need to control the art department because they do stupid stuff like this. The nanoprobe thing was already done in Star Trek with the Borg. The Borg in Star Trek was where it all started. I was feeling pangs of plagiarism all over this RoC story. In your movie the nanoprobes do everything from control Baronesses mind, to changing President Zartans skin color, to collapsing the Eiffel Tower. It’s better than a roll of gaffers tape!!! We got President Zartan whistling annoying tunes and all I think is you were trying to copy Darryl Hannah off of “Kill Bill.” Zartan what is his excuse? Arnold Osloo should have been playing Gung Ho with that shaven head of his. Cobra Commander looks like he got the cheap bargain helmet that Darth Vader refused to buy. Poor Gordan can’t even see out that crappy contraption. Did you see the bottlecap lenses it had? The guy was wide eyed trying to see out that thing! I know you have heard this about the accelorator suits but they were just CGI baloney. There was that scene which was really ripped off Michael Bay’s transformers with the Accelorator suits jumping in slow-mo to avoid missles. Those annoying things looked like a cross of HALO video games and Robo Cop. After that scene I was quoting the perverted old man in Robocop “I’d buy that fer a doller!!!!!” I was reading interviews about how you guys were running up to the last minute do to the writers imminent strike. It was in the screenwriters interview how he said he was writing pages of script as you were shooting! Dude, I haven’t heard about that kind of moviemaking since the original 60’s Star Trek and they got canceled partly do to crappy stories. They wrote and shot at the same time and look where it got them. Jim Cameron always writes about how the story is so important. You can have all these special effects but if the story is crap you got nothing. It is like multiplying with “0″ you always get “0″. Again, maybe Hasbro made some kind of wimpy script that you had to agree to. If so I apologize and forgive this. Business is business. But there are so many fans out there who have yearned for a proper G.I.Joe film. Hasbro or paramount may believe Joe is just a kids show. However, G.I.JOe represents what the 80’s is all about. It is up there with Arnold Schwartenegger in Predator or Terminator. Stallone in Rocky. A-Team’s Mr T. Die Hard’s Bruce Willis. Remember McTiernan’s “Hunt for Red October”? Great 80’s action films. Hell, all of those guys are making movies to this day! Where was Bruce Willis? You ever see “The Seige.” Willis should have been General Hewk. There are so many quality actors for the 80’s who would be perfect. Just perfect. I read your words saying this movie was just ‘pure fun.’ Is that how you judge this? I was expecting an Action Film Opus from you. This was your big shot. Not to rehash Mummy and Van Helsing CGI concepts. Please I beg you to get Jim Cameron, Bryan Singer, Jan Debont, or some other person who can do a proper action movie of this subject matter and scope. G.I.JOe is the essence of the best of the 80s and RoC fumbled the ball. Just plain dropped the ball. You must appreciate this subject. Not butcher it as it has been. This film was unrealized. G.I.Joe is special to me. I know better. Now you can sell this film to the kids and expect to sell action figures. But this doesn’t work on me. I want to good movie of this. G.I.Joe’s rights have been bounced around like a ping pong ball over the years and I have waited patiently for an adequate film to arise from all of this. You let me down Mr. Sommers. There is so much to G.I.Joe. So much more than what you allowed into it. Go do the Tarzan movie. Brendan Fraser would be perfect for it. He was in George of the Jungle you know. Not too far off for him. I just wish Fraser would do more films like the “Quiet American.” Please write or call me. I want to help get this back on track. I know G.I.Joe and there is still good that can come out of this. You need people that have a passion for G.I.Joe. Not people who just think of this as a job and this is the result. Unrealized. Unrealized. G.I.Joe 2 deserves much better than what it was given in RoC. The burden falls on you, director. Thanks for reading my letter and I hope it aims you in the right direction for the future. |
