It's not going to crawl over $300 million domestially. Certainly not in box office. DVD sales and rentals might, and it's a big might, give it another $100 million. The potential for a sequel certainly depends on how well ROC does on video.
If a sequel happens, the budget will certainly get trimmed. With a smaller budget, I don't see too many vehicles making it into the movie. I think they just need to trim down the epic battles and crazy CGI. I'd rather see some more intrigue to the story, and have a few small teams of Joes tracking Cobra's scheme across the globe. Make it a little more grounded.
Now the GI Joe brand is back in the public eye. I think that's an obvious plus to the chance of future media and product. However, I hope the negative opinions of ROC don't ruin the possibility of a franchise, since I belive there's so much potential in the property.

I absolutely agree and if that is the case, we will be getting a more down to earth movie. If stuck true to its roots, the movie could have cost easily half the money, no need to waste it on tasteless CGI for no exact reason...I mean for Gods shake how the hell did they make such cool action flicks back in the 80s without fucking CGI, nowdays everything depends on it and for no reason...only 2 skyrocket the production values..Anyway with a lower budget and some more realistic military action( fuck those goddamn robocop suits) i think we will have a decent sequel.

I think one thing the box office proves is that, regardless of whether it made it's costs back domestically, there is a market for GI JOE movies. As long as they're made more cheaply (and with sets already built & design work done, any potential sequal could be) then Paramount could still have a perfectly viable franchise on their hands.
Trouble is, these people only really seem to think in the short term, and that might jeapordise any chances for a second film.

"Curiously, though Paramount publicly eschewed advanced screenings for movie reviewers, they presented reviewer quotes as the centerpiece of their television ads. Such dogmatic (and, in this case, hypocritical) adherence to critics' quotes only comes at the expense of what audiences truly care about: the story, the characters, the spectacle, etc."

Probably asking too much, but maybe they could step back and give a sequel some decent prep time before shooting - though they're probably scheming to release something as fast as possible in 2011

The film will probably not make 300 million in it's theater run and its interesting to see that the domestic total finally caught up with the international total. It is still playing in a few theaters around me. It will make a nice amount on dvd/blu ray. I just hope they get moving on the sequel because I would love to see it by summer 2011.
