= Worldwide: $222,651,953
Studio ESTIMATES only, by the end of August 23 (Sunday). Of course, figures may change a little bit, but so far, those are the numbers. However, it's starting to lose steam, somewhat, because of District 9's strong 2nd week, and Inglorious Basterd's better than expected 1st weekend gross. No doubt, those two films took some of the potential male audience of G.I. Joe.
And, let's not get carried away with the numbers. Those are bad. Considering these are GROSS. Meaning, the cinema owners, distributors, taxes, etc., will still get their cut. So, the investors will only, probably get, half of the gross (if at all). Considering further that the cost to make the movie is $175M, plus $150M to promote ($325M total cost), for the studio to break even, the movie should have a worldwide gross of somewhere in the $650M-range. It looks like Paramount will not reach that, if current trend holds. So, if they have any hope of recouping their investments, they will have to do it in DVD sales.
Anyone know if they will make a sequel? i know there is a one sentence quote from some Paramount VP who said that a "sequel has been green lit", but nothing is written in stone, so far. Remember after Superman Returns, they said that Bryan Singer has been given the go ahead to make a second movie (he even said so himself), but as you all know by now, that has been scrapped, and they will relaunch the Superman franchise (poor Brandon Routh, not his fault).
So, unless there is an official announcement, we can't rely on that one sentence interview just yet.
I certainly hope all the "real fans" who were up and arms about cursing this movie, even before it has actually been shown are happy. If I am a real fan, I would support a movie based on my favorite toy line/80s cartoon series/comic series, or, at the very least, hope for the best. I do not expect people to say they like something, when they didn't. But, is it too much to ask for people to reserve judgment until they have actually seen the movie? The negative expectations (doom and gloom prophecies) hurt the first weekend opening of the movie. And because of strong competition in it's 2nd and 3rd weekend (from District 9 and Inglorious), G.I. Joe was not able to recover, even with a number of positive word of mouth feedbacks from those who actually saw it. So, what was once, one of the most highly anticipated movies ever, turned out to be a flop, and is in danger of not getting a sequel, thanks largely to "real fans who knows what's best".

That's not a bad gross so far and it is still chugging along. It ended up in 3rd place domestically this weekend (8/21-8/23) with about a 12.5 million haul. It won't reach its purported $175 million cost domestically and will probably top off at around the $140-150 million range here but with the international numbers, it becomes quite the hit.

I would have liked to have seen it made $200 million here in the States. But if it makes around $130-140 million, well then that really isn't bad either.

I'm glad its doing well.. I went, Supported my local Joe's, wasn't impressed overall but it was entertaining. I will watch the sequal too! I wish they would make it more like Wolverine, or Xmen, even Batman and Ironman were good translations from the Comic Book. This movie was just TOO over the top and targeted for 8 yr olds.
WANTS: 2 Main Rotor Blades for WPK Blackhawk Helo.
