Hey, I remember you! The guy that claimed Star Trek was doing poorly when it first came out and that "the Trekkies couldn't keep that movie afloat" and all that. Well, how did those words end up tasting? Star Trek just kept on chugging along, returning to the number one spot multiple times in it's first 3 weeks of release. Total domestic take alone has been $255 million as of now.
G.I.Joe's 11 day take ? 101 million. Star Trek's first 11 days (with much stiffer competition than Joe has had)? 152 million. Man, that felt good. And again, it must really suck to be wrong. Thanks for playing Jax! Sallah As far as the topic at hand, GI Joe will do fine when all is said and done. As for comparing GI Joe to ST it's hardly a fair comparison as there are obviously a lot more trek nerds out there than die hard Joe fans. Oh and I don't see those Trek toys selling too well these days so obviously the movie didn't have as lasting effect as some would probably have liked. We'll give it a few months and see if the same holds true for the ROC toys which, as some here have claimed, is all Hasbro really cares about. |

I liked ROC.
I think it was a good movie. It was no "Big Trouble in Little China" but I, and everyone I know that saw it, enjoyed it. I'm glad they made a Joe movie, and I feel blessed having seen it. They could have just as easily not made one. |

No, but what does make it a flame starter, is a new thread with the only input being "haha".

or worse...they could have made one where this crazy group of prehumanoid people live in the Himalayas and plan to turn every man, woman and child on Earth into mindless beasts by showering the Earth with some mutating spores that will ripen in space via some crazy energy gizmo Cobra steals from GI Joe. Oh and Duke (Channing Tatum) would get stabbed in the heart but, miraculously, NOT die.

Eh I just don't think too highly of most Trekkies or their silly movies so don't take it personally.

Playmates previous Trek line was out for a while probably because it was far superior. |

It helps to not take things too seriously I think. |

with a sequel, you don't need nearly the amount of marketing because the first movie created familiarity and interest. open the sequel in late June, early July, make it slightly more visually similar to what people remember (which by all accounts Sommers has already intimated at, at least with Cobra Commander's mask), and give the Joes a little more individual personality with their uniforms (I liked the concept of the reactive armor until I saw it in action, not to mention how generic all the background Joes felt - they just came across as regular soldiers and not individuals who are the best of the best), and the sequel could easily outperform ROC, making it worth making for the studio even if ROC isn't a monster hit. film studios want franchises. that's where G.I. Joe has its leverage over passing on it just because it only made a small profit in favor of the studio allotting that cost to several smaller movies which combined make a larger sum of profits. if they learn from their mistakes and capitalize on the audience ROC did establish, making a sequel is in their best interest long term and keeping the G.I. Joe franchise on screen for 3 or more movies, or completing this 3 and rebooting it in a few years. Last edited by gunslingercbr; 08-19-2009 at 01:17 PM.. |

We'll give it a few months and see if the same holds true for the ROC toys which, as some here have claimed, is all Hasbro really cares about. But to put that in perspective, do you think that there are more Trek fans than there are Transformers fans? You'd almost have to if you think that there are more Trek fans than there are Joe fans, since there's just about an equal amount of Joe and Transformers fans really. If that is the case, then there should have been enough Trek fans to make them film outpace the Transformers films. So that argument really doesn't hold water. The point is that Trek didn't rely on it's existing fan base (as evidenced by the preformance of the last 2 films which were basically only watched by the trek fans). They made the new film accessible by all moviegoers. Plus it was actually a good movie. Whereas Joe seems to have not really cared about taking care of it's old fans ...and it didn't really produce a good enough film to draw in the filmgoers that base their choice on good reviews... And comparing the toys is a totally different ball of wax. I bought the playmates figures, but I freely admit they aren't even in the same league as hasbro stuff. |

I also tend to think that ST was meant to be a movie and it's toys were only marketed to promote the movie whereas GI Joe is meant to be a toyline and the movie was marketed to promote the toyline. Yeah, that's out there a bit but it makes a little sense and is just another reason why one should not compare the two. It's almost like saying, the Clone Wars movie made nowhere near what ST made in the theater so the Clone Wars was a failure. It wasn't though because Lucas wasn't didn't care how much Clone Wars made at the box office. His goal was to introduce his clone wars series and all of it's toy tie-ins. So ummm yeah... |
