Merchandise and DVD sales are the big money maker as they cost little to produce and have HUGE mark ups.

I think we all heard the story about the marketing costing as much as the movie, but think about that for a little bit and I think you will realize either it makes no sense or Paramount got burned by a really bad deal. Realistically, the movie AND marketing probably was the 175M mark. When you look into the marketing costs story, you only find one article cited over and over again without any backing.

Agreed and it pisses me off that everyone uses that as the Holy grail but then does not belive the budget versus profit provided by Box office Mojo that is a very widely used and reputable site.

Lets See DVD retails for $19.99 in the Portland, Oregon area when not on sale. hmmmm half of $19.99 is $10.00 figure that is the cost from the studio/manufacturer to the retailer, figure it costs less than buck to manufacture for material and labor per unit. so a generous estimate would be roughly a $9 profit per disk, this seems really high but lets go with that. Assume RoC will sell maybe 5 million disks this holiday season at $9 dollar profit that is a $45,000,000.00 profit, which would indeed put them over the reported break even with about a $25,000,000.00 profit.
Plus I can't imagine that Hasbo is not getting a taste of the back end on the DVD sales so that $25,000,000.00 profit is probbaly closer to $20 - $22,000,000.00. In any case at least on paper as far as the reported numbers that we can access in RELIABLE websites. the film has yet to make a profit. and it may not until it sells at least 2.5 million DVD's assuming that my numbers are even close to accurate (and they may not be, they were just guesstimates based on my experience in retail working for Fred Meyers in the late 90's and my current job owning a small bookstore) The point is whether or not any of us liked or hated the film... it 1.) has yet to make a profit, based on the publicly reported costs 2.) There is Pre-production work being done on a sequel So based of these two facts, Somebody in the studio thinks it likely that it will eventually make the studio a hefty profit and might be a good franchise for sequels. |

What supports my statement is how little money those movies make.
The ones that have a reported budget listed are the easy ones to rate I agree. Mind you most studios only report their budget if they are pretty sure they will/can make a profit or someone leaks it out, cause in Hollywood making a movie that is a known huge loss can cost you your job fast. However look at all the ones without one posted and then look how little money most of them have made. Granted little money is a lose term. Its a lot on a personal level. I would kill to make a million in 10 years myself mind you. But for a movie a 1 million dollar month is bad. As most movies are only in theaters for one month or less. Its impossible to get all the numbers, I know this from the years I tried before. You do have to do as much fishing as possible and extrapulate as best you can. But it does not take a math wiz to see with all those movies made in a given year how few make a lot of money. The numbers I can post are there and they are open to personal interupitation. I see those numbers and I see few and far between money makers and lots of poor poor showings.
