They greenlit a sequel on the monday after the opening weekend. They knew EXACTLY how much it was going to make that day and have had a reasonable estimate since day one of production. There is a science to this system.
This movie is successful for them right now, and they will have a sequel. However, the budget will be lower or the same. Where major successes warrant an increase, this is only a modest success for them.

On that premise, it's stick a fork in it then...Don't know about u guys, but the stores can't even seem to give away ROC merchandise over here. I have yet to see anyone even look really look at it, as the pegs are overflowing with product day after day.
It seems to be Indiana Jones all over again to be quite honest. I've seen nothing but strong sales where I live. The TRU displays I had seen packed to the brim are now nearly empty as far as the 3 3/4 figs are concerned. I recently ran across a guy at TRU who is buying 4 of each figure and have seen many kids buying up ROC merchandise. There is no way ROC figures are even in the same solar system as IJ figures.

The way I see it, the best you can hope for most of the time is to make a somewhat modest profit and introduce the audience to the characters and the world they live in for a new franchise. Not every film series can start out big like an Iron Man.
It's that movie that needs to be made to make an even better, focused one.

Bull.
Everything that comes from a movie...ticket sales, DVD sales, sales of the rights for television viewing, licensing for merchandise...EVERYTHING gets rolled up to determine how "successful" a movie is. There is no imaginary dividing line between "G.I. Joe, the Rise of Cobra" and "G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra, the DVD." They're the same product packaged differently, and if you don't think DVD sales go towards offsetting losses taken in other areas of production, marketing, whatever, then you're delusional. Unless of course you can prove your credentials as an accountant for Paramount Studios, a movie producer for said studio, or one of their chief executives...but somehow I doubt that's forthcoming. Your "peek into the movie theater" is also erroneous. Movie theaters don't get remotely near 50 or even 40 percent of the grosses for major films. On opening weekend (when most films make most of their money) they're lucky if they get 25% of the ticket grosses for a major film (and might be even less for a REALLY big film). That percentage then goes up with each week the movie is in theaters, up to about a total of 50% (which accounts for a very small portion of the overall gross, because by the time it reaches that number the movie has been in theaters several weeks and few people are going to see it. This information comes straight from a theater owner I'm acquainted with. There's a reason concessions are so outrageously priced...it's because theaters aren't making diddly off of ticket sales. I even went as far as to say that there is no reason why it wont have a sequel...... I was simply saying that to break even or make a profit they would have to make X,Y and Z. And in the last 100 years or so of movie making business DVD's has been a factor for less than 15 years..... So NO, studios do not count DVD sales into theatrical sales. One has nothing to do with the other. How can they factor in DVD sales when the frakking movie is still in the theaters.. You need to get a grip on what your thoughts are before you spew them at us. Now I don't need to give you a resume on who I am and any one with a semblance of intelligence would think that if I did work for Paramount I would not be crapping on my own film. Not to mention that I will trade my knowledge of putting a film into theaters when you give me the information of said manager you are acquainted with. |

The other thing to consider with RoC is how much of the production cost was split between Paramount and Hasbro.
Hasbro's not going to look to make all the money from the production and advertising from the movie sales, for them it's one giant commercial for the toys and other liscensed materials. So for Hasbro the overall success of RoC would factor in the movie, comics, books, children's books, stickers, role playing costumes, video game, and the toys. |

Just to clarify something........ I thought the movie was a horrible mess but I loved the fact that I got to see GI JOE in live action. So before someone brands me a Hater.......I am not. I wish to God that we get a trilogy and spin-off movies and outside of the message boards I speak very highly of this film.
I look at the Tank as a family, we can talk about our own but nobody else can do it. So I might diss the movie for its lack of everything here but when someone asks me, I always say its a great pop-corn film and has some great action sequences......and Ninjas....... who doesnt like ninjas!.... Done with that rant! |

I'm just glad most the haters on here, just talk a big game and have seen the movie and will buy the DVD, tell ya what kids if the movie fails, then GI Joe will go bye bye and we wont get to enjoy cool stuff in the future....no resolute...no 25th line..... nothing. So why would you hope the movie fails? If the movie is a success there gonna go more with GI Joe, so come on people it was not a bad movie, it was a nice fun movie and I liked it better than revenge of the fallen and I'm a big transformers fan also. At least gi joe developed the joes, more than they developed the new transformers. And the plot was better than revenge of the fallen.

I am still trying to figure out the purpose of this thread. The OP asked if this movie was a blockbuster. The answer is no. For it's opening weekend it did about as well as many of us predicted it would (50-70 million) and dropped off considerably (58%) from there. It held the #1 spot for one week and was dethroned by a movie that had nowhere near the same amount of marketing. That should have been enough to answer the question. Folks should really stop over analyzing this thing and let it go. The movie did ok/well for an August release and will do even better once it comes out on DVD. How many of you/us actually plan to buy the movie the day it comes out on DVD? I do.
