Both Marlon Wayans and Rachel Nichols were in Japan to promote "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and there are a few interesting things from the article in regards to a Marlon playing Ripcord who was originally white and his character's attraction to Scarlett.
The article is from the Daily Yomiuri and is in English: Action figures: 'G.I. Joe' stars on real-life heroics, daikon and geeks as tastemakers : DY Weekend : Features : DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE (The Daily Yomiuri) Here are a few key comments from the interview: "Scarlett and Ripcord have that teenage love, you know, that innocent love," Wayans said. "[The story of Duke and the Baroness] is more dramatic, where ours is more fun...it was just kind of like, 'Look at that pretty girl with the red hair.' 'Hey, look at that brother with the nice shoulders.'" Both characters existed in the TV show, but their relationship is new. A few other details also changed. "Ripcord was originally written as a Caucasian, you know, and last time I checked I wasn't that," Wayans said, holding his hands out to examine them. "But he was also written as charming. Handsome. He's a fighter pilot, and he's athletic. A little funny. And those things, I go, 'I can play.'" ---- The audiences for both G.I. Joe and Star Trek include people who might be described as geeks. Wayans admitted to having used the G-word himself in the past. "But then I sat back and I really analyzed it, and I was like: 'You know what? Those guys aren't geeks. They're actually tastemakers.' The movies that have done the best in the last maybe five to 10 years are all comic-book hero movies. Look: X-Men, Ironman, G.I. Joe, The Transformers...I think it's because of the great characters that are written [in those stories]." Wayans said that as a kid, he preferred watching G.I. Joe cartoons to doing his homework, but he is also on record as saying that his family was too poor to buy the action figures ---- When order was restored in the interview room, the two actors speculated on what Ripcord and Scarlett's relationship will be like in any G.I. Joe sequels. "Maybe we get married and have some black kids with nappy red hair, and shooting bow and arrows," Wayans said, referring to Scarlett's trademark weapon. Taking a more serious tone, Nichols said: "The relationship between Duke and the Baroness is very heavy and it's very dramatic, and we get to have this great, fun, almost high-school romance, which I think will continue to grow in future films, provided that we make more. So hopefully everybody will like this one, and then--" "Or maybe I dump you, and I start dating the Baroness just to piss you off." "What!" Nichols shrieked, before recovering to suggest, "Maybe I'll dump you and start dating Snake Eyes just to piss you off." "Hey, guess what? Have fun. I'm not going to fight a ninja over you. You're pretty--but not that pretty."

Ha! If I would have done the interview it would have went something like this:
"Marlon Wayan, thanks for making Ripcord an idiot! Why are you such a douche anyway?" "Rachel Nichols, can I drink your bath water?" |

I actually thought the interview was charming. I'm glad he addressed the black actor playing as a caucasian character issue some people seem to be having. I gotta say though it was channing tatum who had the worst acting in the movie. He came off like a stick figure. maybe we should've been more worried about him than marlon waynes. all in all I enjoyed the movie for what is was and ended up seeing it twice. I might go for a third time at the dollar theatre.

Didn't bother to read it because I honestly don't care a thing for the guy. To me he's just a second rate actor who, if you believe the critics, is just another cast member in a second rate film.
Oh, and just so there is no confusion later, Han shot first and Ripcord is white! |

Well- if Scarlett gets with Ripcord in the next film instead of Snake Eyes- NOT "Snake" then Larry was paid a huge chunk of money to look the other way and to just go a head and throw the mythologizes all out the window. If I would have been in Larry Hama's shoes and I was the one that wrote the Marvel comics, and Paramount would have come to me with the crap they were going to do to my characters- I would have told them where to go!
I've said it before 75% of the film was good and I could live with their changes. The other 25% is just crap and needs to go. Rex=Cobra Commander- Brother to the Baroness. Duke+ Baroness= Relationship. Scarlett flirting back with Ripcord- maybe a relationship with him instead of Snake Eyes. Snake Eyes+ Storm Shadow's back history being all different. GIJOE being a non American team- this is coming from a lefty non the less. These are the major problems I have with RoC. So don't call me a hater- I'm more of someone in between. -sigh- Ripcord and Scarlett HAS to go.
"Maybe I'll dump you and start dating Snake Eyes just to piss you off." That quote pisses me off, because I think that's what most of the fans would actually like to see happen. |

Yep, the whole interview, much like the film itself, is one big "f*** you" to anyone who cared about the characters and relationships in the comics, or good writing/acting in general.
