I've been a big G.I. Joe fan since I was 5 or so. When I first heard about the movie, I was a little worried. I was mostly afraid that it would be cheesy or have bad graphics or lame acting/dialog. And honestly, it had all three of those things at one time or another. But they really didn't bother me. What bothered me most was the plot changes or character changes that were introduced in the story line. Here are a few specifics:
Character Changes: Baroness: How can Baroness be good?? This one was really disappointing to me. She is supposed to be a super-bad, dominate female character who was extremely skilled at manipulation and deceit. But she comes off as unstable. I'm sure this is a result of the brain washing (another aspect I'm not too big of a fan of). Scarlet: She seems way too vulnerable to me. I always remember her as being very tough. She was never the type of girl who would need to be saved because she could hold her own just fine. This is not portrayed at all. For the most part, all of the other characters were well done. Romantic Interests: Obviously, romantic interests are a large part of just about any movie, but why did the writers think it was necessary to deviate from the comic so much? Duke/Baroness: This relationship goes hand-in-hand with my disappointment in Baroness's and Scarlet's character. In my opinion, it would have been much better to have had the traditional "cartoon" relationship between Duke and a "Tough" Scarlet and let them try to out-do eachother throughout the movie. Bad Guy who is really good: I don't see how this character can be Baroness. To me, she is too much of an important piece of the puzzle for cobra. In my opinion it makes a lot more sense for the Bad character who helps G.I. Joe to be Storm Shadow. This is much more along the lines of the comic and adds more depth to Snake Eyes and Storm Shadows love/hate relationship. Character Origins: Storm Shadow/Snake Eyes. I really wish the movie would have shown them growing up, training together for longer. It appears that they only knew eachother for a few years, at best. Why not show them building a brother-like relationship? This would be a perfect way to tie in Bad-Guy who helps G.I. Joe twist. I guess my main question is, why change so much of the story? The comic already had all of these important plot lines laid out. All they had to do was follow them. I'm not saying I hated the movie, but I was disappointed in a lot of aspects. I'm still a huge G.I. Joe fan, but I really think the die-hard, long time fans are going to be left scratching their head... |

I think it'd be dumb if it was just the cartoon style characters and their distinct personalities onscreen I want to see a new version of the JOES. New mythology, new ideas. With homages to the things we liked as kids. |

No shit they do. Seriously. Everyone who complains or has a statement about this or that, which I respect, basically just wants to see the cartoon on screen in live action.

What's the point of making a G.I. Joe movie if the characters don't accurately portray the ones we knew and loved growing up? The homage I was looking for were the story lines and details that made the characters interesting when I became a G.I. Joe fan, being brought to life on the big screen. Not someone saying "and knowing is half the battle" or asking for some bubble gum. Don't get me wrong, I fully expected the writers to tweak the plot to make it 'work' in a two hour movie, but in this case they didn't just tweak it; they broke it, flipped it around, turned it inside out and duck-taped it back together to make it work..... |
