I figured if I'm going to start a new thread (sorry to these guys, I sympathize) for yet another ROC review, I should have a unique take on it. So, I went back and found a post I made just over 4 months ago laying out my fears about the movie. Having just seen it, here's my follow-up, with spoilers.
Original post here: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...tml#post712688 Overall, ROC did what I expected to do, but it was not as bad as it could have been... I, like I think a lot of fans, was not upset that things were changing, but it just didn't appear that the changes/updates would do justice to the great humor, action and characterization we remember from the comics, cartoons & toys. I said then: Quote:

Similarly, Channing Tatum, Dennis Quad, Rachel Nichols, Ray Parks, Marlon Wayans, Chris Eccleston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Sienna Miller have done very little in their acting careers to show me they can take the trite, unimaginative material provided them and produce an engaging, gripping character out of it.
Quote:
In all, while I still believe a much better GI Joe movie could have been made for this target audience and with this budget, ROC was definitely NOT the disappointment I feared it would be. Several elements that drew a lot of anxious ire and worry because they looked terribly cheesy or just plain terrible (accelerator suits, nanomites, The Doctor) were used very well and didn't wreck a movie that didn't have a lot of depth to spare. I'm not rushing to see ROC again, but it's not the pile o'crap I feared from having little faith (I still believe justifiable so) in the people behind and in it. Everybody put their best feet forward. Those feet are not that great, but they don't ruin a movie I dearly didn't want to see ruined. Final random thoughts: --Can anybody confirm if the Baroness said her "real american heros" line when she's riding up the Paris elevator? I didn't think she did, which makes me think they dubbed that in just for the trailer to assauge the fears that the movie was not "Amero-centric" enough --I don't normally notice this, but man, there seemed to be a lot of violence and swearing for a PG13 movie. I swear like a sailor on shore leave, but I feel for parents who take their kids because they are really who the movie's for and hear a stream of S#!ts and viper after viper getting a knife in the eye. --A lot of people posted their concerns about the movie before seeing it (duh!) and I won't stand up for those who were just ranting, venting or just b****ing and moaning, but a lot of times these concerns were voiced more or less reasonably, and often they are met with the blanket "you can't judge a book by it's cover" "you can't say anything until you see the movie" or "I won't form an opinion before I see the movie" type statements. Those types of rebuttals really irk me. First, as a cognitive psychologist, not only are those statements just ignorant (we form judgments based on limited sets of information literally a thousand times a day), but also as somebody who is revisiting their expectations for the movie written 4 months ago, I have to say those expectations were more right than they were wrong. Perhaps this is just me confirming a preconceived bias. I'll buy that, but I'm trying to be as objective as possible, and I think it's grossly ignorant to say you can't know what to expect from a movie based on the people behind it and the limited footage you've seen. ROC was better than I thought/feared, and I'm glad for it. But, in general, to paraphrase Denny Green- "." --Finally, Sienna Miller=Yes Thanks for reading this far- just wanted the chance to say my piece and balance out the inevitable stream of 2 sentence OMG! or Oh Noez! reviews bound to come.

Hey, common sense amongst the maelstrom, nice!
I thought the inevitable tide of hate reviews would bother me, but in fact they've had the opposite effect and are bouying me even further for the film (won't be seeing it until next week). After all, just about every criticism is (and stems from) what I expected: "Not my GI JOE, ergo it's worthy of dismissal". This is something I've accepted and embraced; it's different, it's new, it's no less Joe because of it. Also, the more extreme, knee-jerk "Worst Movie Ever" threads are actually downright hilarious and offer me the comfort that there are far more hysterical, narrow minded individuals out there than I'll ever know. Even so, it's nice to see that common sense creep into the internet now and then...

Great review, I agree with a lot of things you've said!
I've been formulating my thoughts trying to write a review of it for a while now but you've summed up a lot of my thoughts. Edit and ***spoilers below*** I honestly thought Ripcord was the most fleshed out 3D character of the film, even though he got to deliver the worst line in the film (you know the Celtic line that activates the missiles, ugh) My biggest gripe was that the backstories sort of just happened, they actually didn't serve there purpose which was to invest you in those characters, and they could have done with being a bit longer actually. Rex was amazing, I though JGL did really well as oppossed to Chris Eccleston, didn't like him as Destro at all, much prefered the original McCullen at the start. Anyway when Rex became Cobra Commander that's when I didn't like it. First I know it's just a mask but it didn't look good at all, then his voice got weirder. Honestly a hood would have been good. Also the rise of cobra subtitle is a bit misleading, I mean have Cobra really risen? Destro and CC are locked up, Zartan is the president but you know still. I thought it would be Cobra Troopers storming the world and being recruited etc. Also Zartan just needed a little bit more to do, he needed a bit more story as again the reveal at the end lacked the impact hat I'm sure they thought it had. ...but the best two things about the film, The Baroness and Storm Shadow. I for one like the Baroness twist, it worked with the story and the power of those nano-mites. Storm Shadow was just bad ass, had all the good lines and was just generally cool. Anyway I enjoyed the film, glad to have a GI Joe film, it could have been terrible, it's not. I'm somewhere in the middle, I loved a lot of it, but disliked other parts! Anyway I hope someone gets a chance to make a second one, but until then Yo Joe!

See, now this is a good review. This is what I'd like to see more then the "two thumbs down".
I would like to see more from people comparing what they thought to what they walked out thinking. Kudos.

Awesome, poignant, balanced and articulate review. Kind of a rarity for a ROC topic. Well done.

Thanks for the kind words and thanks all for reading all it! I love to see longer, more flushed out posts here on the tank...
@Cobra-Viper, yeah, come to think of it the title seems really off; it's almost like they had the title before the started writing because that is what they wanted to capture, but after writing it, it just didn't fit anymore... I also thought Zartan needed more to do, but given that he's like the 5th named bad guy, I understand why he got shafted. Looks like he'll have a bigger role in the next one.
