Just finished the movie and have to say I really enjoyed it. Better than Transformers 2 but much less emotional depth than star trek.
Dialogue isn't particularly great and characters and plotlines that in outline form work rather well are not played out with much conviction. Where ROC scores is in the action sequences which are GI Joe all over. Some messy CGI in alot of places but overall it works.
All the action sequences particularly accelerator suits and the end battle that moves at a great pace
Watchability factor: alot easy to follow the story and action rather than the blurred mess of GCI robots, all over the place plotting, loud and boring, and silly gags that ruined TF2
Ripcord - not the Jar Jar binks of this movie in fact brings some much need humour
The Doctor/CC - nicely judged between the comic and cartoon with voice acting by JGL. His transformation to full on CC at the end of the pic is a little too hammy and Darth Vader ROTS like. The Mask doesn't seem to work.
Storm Shadow - very good performance and if he was fleshed out more and wasn't unmasked too much could have been a contender. Gets killed at the end before we get a chance to get his side of the story (we still don't know if he killed the Hard Master). Here;s hoping they do the Ninjas can slow their heart and appear dead trick. Although falling into the freezing Arctic ocean with a sword through your chest will be quite a fate to come back from.
Heavy Duty - very functional character but Mr. Eko does a good job with him.
Baroness- Sienna is actually very likeable and the one who comes closest to a 3D person. Goes from being the bad guy to good a little too quickly though and isn't helped by the script.
The Troopers - everyone may have slagged them off early on but the Vipers are cool - they even have little stormtrooper voices
Duke - not the old fashioned gruff soldier of the comics, Channing Tatum is a little wooden and only comes alive when barking orders
Snake Eyes - visually looks fine, mouth not an issue but we barely get a sense of an intriguing man of mystery to be set up for sequels. Unfortunately, neither Scarlett or SS are the mouthpiece for his emotions as they are in the comic. White Arctic mask is a nice touch though.
Hawk - the perfect man for the job, Dennis Quaid is good but a little stilted. His trailer dialogue is actually better.
Scarlett - does her job well but not given much depth and barely a hint of relationship to SE.
Destro - 9th Doctor does ok but this is not the booming voice, noble villain type of the comics/TV but a bitter weasel of a man. You can't really feel for his motivations as a 3D character or boo him as pantomime villain. He's in that shaky middle ground. His mask revealed at the end actually grows on his burnt face via the nanomites which a neat twist that stops him being a Doctor Doom clone and fulfills the McCullen curse set up in the beginning.
Zartan - not strictly the man of the comic and toy but he does inherit the sci fi camoflage technology and sets up the sequel
The depth - the emotional context to the film (SE and SS backstory) (Baroness Duke Rex) are played out too simply and without emotional context.
Too many half hearted flashbacks are used to tell the stories.
In the case of Duke being engaged to Baroness, her brother Rex getting supposedly killed, both of them becoming vengeful characters is something that could have come out of the comic but is handled with no depth. There's barely a flicker from Duke and Ana when Rex pops up as the Doctor.
The scenario of comics 26 and 27 is played out in too quick and emotionless fashion. The hard master (standard oriental kung fu man) is killed when they are both kids and SS runs off leaving no room for anymore adult ninja training or character motivation. Here's hoping there is more backstory that can be told by the adult versions a la the Vietnam flashbacks. Also, the hexagram has no real function except for fanboys to wank over.
In fact the fight between the kids is better than the adult version
Breaker - retains the techno geek aspect of the comics but a bad performance by the actor
Cover Girl - says a few lines and gets stabbed by Zartan - a little pointless
Soundtrack - like most modern movies, with frenetic action and noise levels means Alan Silvestri can't insert any kind of music other than bog standard incidentals. No main theme to speak of and no evidence of the man who did memorable Back to the Future and Predator soundtracks
What I find particularly amusing is the things the No-Joes on this site hate the most, accelerator suits, Marlon Wayans and the Doctor/CC are the best things in in it.
Overall, a fun enjoyable ride for kids which is exactly what GI Joe is meant to be. Anyone who says its not the GI Joe they remember is only half right. Its probably not for those who still read the newer boring, po faced comics or think the boring, po faced resolute is the only true version of Joe.
Read the original comics 1-10 and see the film, you'll realise that tonally it isn't far off.
At least it wasn't badly dubbed with Action Force over the top of GI Joe!
Thanks to anyone who has managed to read to the end of this long and boring guff at 12.30 on a Friday night.
