ok. please no bashing of ROC. we had lots of threads for that. lol. let's just discuss about how kids nowadays see Joes after seeing ROC. i'm just writing what i observed. and i felt like writing today.
i have an 11 year old cousin. obviously he didn't know about G.I. Joes until ROC. today i let him watch Resolute with me. i wanted him to know Joes as i never had in my time (i didn't grow up on G.I. Joe). as he was watching, he kept on comparing Resolute to ROC. not in a basher's perspective but an innocent kid's perspective. -he insisted that Cobra Commander is the woman's (Baroness) little brother. -he said that Resolute is just like ROC because he saw Flint was wearing black. lol. -when he saw Storm Shadow, he said that SS was the brother of SE. (from SS's "hello brother" line in ROC). he never recognized Baroness on Resolute because if he did he would probably say that she was Duke's lover. *i took some time to explain to him things that the movie was different from the original story. i understand that ROC was aimed for kids in this generation. but it's kinda sad that the G.I. Joe kids nowadays would know is utterly distorted. Last edited by Squall; 04-08-2010 at 05:44 AM.. |

I have a 3 and a 6 year old, and I won't let them watch either Resolute or RoC yet because of the language used in both films. I have let my sons see some original cartoon episodes, and they seem to like it. This may give my sons a "clearer" view of the Joe canon because they will have seen the cartoon first.
The thing is, it's all about what you are exposed to first. For some reason, maybe it's because it came out first and because there was an issue every month, I tend to think of the comic as being the actual Joe story. I watched the cartoon, but wasn't ever that impressed with it. In a way, Hasbro has re-booted Joes, so now even though some of the core characters are there, the story is a little different, and this is what the current generation of kids will have to go on until they discover the comics, cartoon, etc.

I completely agree. I absolutely hate the distorted perspective kids have of GI JOE's very basic story arc today, because of RoC.
I have two little cousins who are totally into GI JOE (I've even got them army building!), they are head over heals for RoC, or anything GI JOE for that matter. So I showed them Resolute and a couple of classic episodes, as well as some of my comics. It took me at least an hour to get them to understand the actual basic story arc, after repeatedly explaining that SS and SE aren't real brothers, Baroness, CC, and Duke aren't all intertwined. What made it even harder was that I still haven't seen RoC to date, so I, in a way, am just as confused as these poor kids as to what is going on anymore. We can only hope the PoC and RoC2 will right the wrongs.

My boys have been watching the Sunbow cartoons for years... And lately have been reading the Marvel comics as well...
They liked the movie, like the toys from it, but don't think of it's characters as part of the "real" G.I. Joe universe... |

Distorted how? That it's not the same as our Joe?
I have to ask.. so? Why does it need to be? There are no rights to wrong. I hate to say it, but in a way, we're the ones that are now ruining it for them. RoC is their Joe ARAH/Resolute is our Joe By forcing our Joe into their Joe we are distorting it for them. What is wrong with them liking RoC? Seriously? We are forcing our concept of Joe onto them, not letting them form their own opinions or thoughts. Comments like "had them watch ARAH so they'd know what the real Joe is first" isn't true. It should be "had them watch ARAH so they'd know what my Joe is first". Why can't RoC be their Joe? Just because some of us didn't like it? Just because it's not ARAH accurate? Kids today aren't allowed to have their version of Joe?

I agree with both sides of the debate.
In my opinion, our G.I.Joe (RAH & Resolute) is the better cannon, and I hate people (child or adult) thinking that G.I.Joe is and always has been RoC. But I also see the other side. Why confuse the kids if they enjoy RoC? That would be like our dads coming to us and saying, "You're G.I.Joe is crap! G.I.Joe wasn't a whole team! G.I.Joe was ONE man!" If the kids are interested in finding out about our generation's G.I.Joe, teach them. If not, let it go.

Although I don't defend ROC as Passionately as Troynos, I do have to admit he's argument is valid. Look at transformers. They've had G1, beastwars, beast machines, RID, Armada, Energon, Cybertron, animated and live action movie. each one is different, each one tells a different story, except where one countines into the next for example: BW,BM and the armada trilogy. but still, things get invented and reinvented, if a kid now a days asked me something about joes i would tell them they're not the ones I grew up with. Simple as that. that's what the 40 and 50 year olds would say to me, they grew up with the 'barbie doll" joes.

Kids today aren't allowed to have their version of Joe? I think many of these posters are doing right to introduce their kids to the original cartoons and comics, which compliment each other, unlike RoC which kind of craps all over both the cartoons and the comics. Is it OK to have a stand alone movie? sure, but i think it is more important on every level, even fiscally for the franchise and intellectual property, to further prop up the established joeverse instead of tearing it down. If RoC had been successful, I wonder how much of a negative impact that would have had on the next up and coming generation of vintage joe collectors? I know I am completely uninterested in 12" figs, i was introduced to joe with sunbow, and have been bending over backwards to get all my favorite original chars redone in 25th. I can enjoy some of the toys, and even the RoC movie itself for a stand alone mindless action big budget cgi heavy movie, but i think a lot of people would agree with me when i say RoC will never be gi joe canon, RoC will always take backseat when there is a dispute or inconsistency of a canon nature. That is the way it should be, so I am glad that the movie failed to be recognized as canon by the majority but i am also glad the movie sold enough toys that we might have the PoC line and many more lines in the future (((casts a look over at his wall of RoC figs and vehicles))) I know i did my part to try and make sure hasbro keeps producing 3.75 gi joe figs! |
