I feel as though critics are pretty accurate about 80% of the time. But that 20% difference is because movies are all subjective. Anything about the experience can make or break it and those variables are completely different from one person to the next. I don't always agree with the critics (The Hours was really awful but admired by critics), but usually the scores on Rotten Tomatoes and the Top 1000 Voters on IMDB are a good indication of a movie's quality.
To most people on here, I would be considered a snob when it comes to movies. I do like a quality story and decent dialog. But at the same time there are instances where a movie can be just mediocre but also entertaining. I will go into GI Joe with low expectations, but a very open mind. And I will be brutally honest of my opinion of the movie after I see it, good or bad. As for box-office receipts being an indicator of how good a movie is....couldn't be the furthest thing from the truth for me, personally. A lot of movies that make lots of money now days are pretty crappy. In the end we should all be able to express our own, subjective and personal opinions about a movie. I don't like the lynch mob mentality of ganging up on this movie and trashing it, but I also don't like it when somebody may actually not genuinely like it and still gets attacked by others. I hated TF2, it was steaming pile of trash in my eyes. But I am not going to attack otehrs for liking it. They simply don't have the same taste in movies as me and that's what makes the world so great, so many people with different interests and tastes. Yo Joe!!

Just for the record. "... No children's tale is Hollywood's Wizard of Oz. Lavish in sets, adult in humor, it is a Broadway spectacular translated into make-believe ... Its tornado rivals Sam Goldwyn's The Hurricane. Its final sequence is as sentimental as Little Women..." - Time Magazine, 1939 "Judy Garland makes a delightful Dorothy as she wanders through Oz until she realizes that all the wonderment in the world can be had in her own back yard ... The Wizard of Oz is an amusing and spectacular film." - The New York Herald Tribune, 1939 "4 stars. Judy Garland is perfectly cast as Dorothy. She is as clever a little actress as she is a singer and her special style of vocalizing is ideally adapted to the music of the picture." - The New York Daily News, 1939 "A delightful piece of wonder-working which had the youngsters' eyes shining and brought a quietly amused gleam to the wiser ones of the oldsters. Judy Garland's Dorothy is a pert and fresh-faced miss with the wonder-lit eyes of a believer in fairy tales." - Frank S. Nugent, The New York Times, August 18, 1939 And yes, I'll be seeing ROC this weekend. |

After the critical failure that was ROTF I refuse to read any reviews and while yes I check the tomatometer to see how it's doing I am happy. Honestly I loved ROTF but the poor words coming from the critics have turned a lot of people to the "I hate ROTF" side and it seems like it might make the fandom tare itself apart again. I can't wait for this movie to come out, it reminds me a lot of the cartoon the only thing that bothers me a little is CC but then that it looks like it rules. Is there a possibility of it pulling a Dragonball and making only $57,743,263? Yes. Is there a possibility of it pulling a Watchmen by being a great movie but no one saw it and it made only $182,735,282? Yes. Is there a possibility of it pulling a Transformers by having everyone think it will suck because it wasn't GEEWUN but it turned out to be good, bring back old fans that left, and bring in new fans all while making $708,272,592? Yes. Or it could be a horrible movie that still makes $812,717,942 just because of boobs and esplosions become #9 domestic and #20 All time worldwide? Yes. I have no idea what might happen I just hope it does good and adds new attention to the franchise. Anyone who doesn't want that should just pack up and leave. nuff said

It doesn't matter to me when or where they screen it.
I will make my own judgment when I see it myself. |

ironman and the dark knight were loved by critics and regular folks. both big action films. the unwillingness to show the film is a slap in the face to midwest folks. basically they are saying the critics want substance like good acting and a plot. lets show it to the people with low standards. we just want to make money. not a good film.

do I have lower standards because I love National Lampoons Vacation than someone who loves Citizen Kane? of course not, because I enjoy Citizen Kane as well. it is possible to enjoy both. same with folks in the midwest, so claiming it means otherwise is dishonest. |

So you seem to be saying there are films with 'substance' and films without substance, with no room for any middle ground. I refuse to use the "check brain at the door" saying for films as it sounds like I'm making apologies for them, but I will say that 'films' can entertain on many levels and it's perfectly acceptable (and important) that movies are made that function on the level of 'pure entertainment'. But of course, because too many people consider themselves 'all grown-up' psuedo intellectuals, no film is allowed to be like that without being dubbed 'brainless'. Personally, I can have as much fun with CARRY ON CLEO as I can with A CANTABURY TALE and feel sorry for those who feel the need to dismiss anything that they consider to be lacking 'depth'...
