Regardless of opinion on this films merits or lack of, the simple facts are that if they did not screen it for critics, it's not a good sign for the box office take, not too many movies are not screened for critics and go on to be huge box office hits spawning sequels. Haven't seen the movie, might next week, I know everyone on this board is a Joe fan, but this movie will not "swim" at the box office if the average moviegoer senses this movie is a bomb, and it's not off to a good start.
As far as rotten tomatoes...no important critic is listed, it's 80% rating might drop like a rock by next week. If the movie is good, word of mouth MIGHT save it, but I wouldn't bet the farm that the non Joe moviegoers are dying to see this movie, I might be wrong, but I might be right. They are not screening GI Joe for critics, but they are still screening it across the country for promotional reasons and the average Joe can attend those screenings. And the movie has been screening to internet film critics, who most likely reach more of the youth audience than the traditional critic does. Paramount is hoping to spread word of mouth through viewers and likeminded "geek cinema culture" critics before the movie opens, NOT your average newspaper critics. For what its worth, GI Joe is currently projected to open to at least 50 million this weekend. We'll see how Paramounts marketing plan has worked over the next 2 weeks. Paramount is doing everything they can to make sure the film stays afloat due to the overwhelmingly negative buzz that the movie suffered in the past year. And in a way I don't really disagree with what they are doing, especially in light of what happened with Transformers 2 |

50 million might be wishful thinking. The way new movies are dropping like flies, I think the summer box office is closed. Funny people was considered to be a hit, it didn't open big, Harry Potter and G-Force have also tailed off big time. Not sure if August( this year anyway ) is ripe for a 50 mil movie.

But now a rival studio even tells me, "Paramount is doing a good job ignoring the sniping and snarking. It's come on tracking really strong. It's looking to open at $50M-$60M -- which is a great result."
If it does less than 50, that will be very bad news considering the pick up in interest in the past several weeks. |

Well the two biggest film mags in the UK have reviewed it and they aren't on Rotten Tomatoes like they usually are, but they are on thier respective websites if you wish to check them out!
Empire gave it 2/5 stars. This review is pretty negative. Total Film gave it 3/5 stars. Pretty good review! so critics here have seen it. I don't know what to think about not showing it, I think it's mostly the negative buzz the film has been getting for the reshoots etc, plus add in Transformers 2 awful reception and you get what they are doing. Honestly, I think we all know if the film was truly terrible it wouldn't even be in theatres like Chun Li and most of those other movies. but anyway is anyone else just tired of all this stuff, why is it that positive GI Joe reviews must be plants?! Can't it actually be good...? Anyway this is me not caring about anything else and going to see the movie on Thursday! (oh yeah we get it on the 6th in the UK and Ireland) and if it sucks, it sucks I'll be hurt, and if it's good I'll be happy. I won't say I told you so if it was good or if it was bad. I'll discuss it's merits and bad points. I just want to see it! Lol. Yo Joe!

sure, it is possible that people simply aren't interested in movies any longer this summer, but I doubt it. it is more likely that nothing has come out in a few weeks that people are interested in. |

Yes, that is a thing to take into consideration
There hasnt been a big action movie since June Transformers is done and Harry Potter is on its way too Last weekend was a bust at the Box Office Literally everything is in GI Joes favor for a solid opening weekend. |

The problem is critics are into being entertainers themselves and it's about them more than what they're reviewing. I read a horrible one for this film and I came away thinking this person just wanted to try stand up. Being creatively mean sells and unfortunately the industry is full of them. The sad part is being creatively impartial is something few can do.

Yes, this film is a strange beast. For one reason or another Paramount seems to have gone "experimental" with how they market the film. I can only wonder whether or not that'll be taken into account if the movie is not as successful as they might like it to be.
Honestly, a $50 million opening weekend, while respectable, is probably not going to be enough to make the movie's production budget back in domestic release without REALLY good word of mouth (Figure 50-60% drop for the second weekend, and downhill from there). It might squeak to $150 million, but getting to $175-$200 million (which would make it a "big hit" by most standards) won't likely be possible while in theaters. They'll have to hope for good DVD and International business to make up the difference. |
