Please- this post is for constructive Pros and Cons.
Just got back from the 10:15am showing and my thoughts. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS Things I liked: Seeing a live action GIJOE Movie on the big screen! Good story and great action scenes! Seeing Snake and Storm go at it was cool- needed more of it though! Loved the doctor character AKA Cobra Commander- put the face shield on him in the next movie and he'll rock as CC! The movie kept its pulse and not any slow areas. I enjoyed it for the most part and I feel that Sommers pulled off a good Comic book feel to a movie based off a toy etc etc! Now- things I didn't like: The special effects in some ares seemed a little fake-ish. The acting was a little flat in some areas- but not major. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow characters are one-dimensional in this film, compared to how they were written by Larry Hama. I wish they would have made the movie 15 minutes longer, just so you would learn more about them- maybe in the sequel! The other problem with them is, that they seemed just angry at each other or disliked each other and weren't ever best friends at one time. ??? I didn't like the past relationship between Duke and the Baroness. The Baroness IMOP should be ruthless. I really didn't like how they "possibly" redeemed her at the end on the movie! I still don't like that the Baroness and Cobra Commander are brother and sister! With all of it's problems- it's not bad at all and I give it 3 out of 5 stars. I'm going to go back tomorrow with my brother and see it again and see all the stuff I missed the first time. Last edited by sn8ke3y3s; 08-07-2009 at 03:06 PM.. |

2nd one will be better. I'm hoping for Secratary of state Zarana.
But much better than I expected even with Duke and Cover Girl's terrible "acting" and the relationship subplots. |

honestly, how many other aspects of life do you look at change from 25 years ago and feel your childhood has been destroyed by that change. if not any, feeling such just about G.I. Joe doesn't make any sense.
personally, being opposed to change to G.I. Joe is the same as being opposed to any sort of change in the world... As a side note, it's not the even the fact that there's change we don't like, it's the kind of change. It's the total departure we don't care for. Again, I like IDW's stuff overall. I liked Resolute. I don't think I'll care much for RoC. Going back to your first point, the sense of loss by the poster is perfectly justifiable. For arguments sake (and again, this is not my personal position), let's just say I was opposed to change in GI Joe, because ARAH for me (in this example ) is a part of my childhood, a nostalgic thing I've been a part of for 25 years. There was a bit of a tiny boom with DD's comic series and the 25th line. And now Hasbro is taking away all of that in favor of something barely recognizable as the Joe I love. There's a justifiable sense of loss there, which is what the poster was getting at. Again, he wasn't trying to say anything was "actually destroyed", no one's said that, that's a straw man. Furthermore, I don't see how liking or disliking change in that scenario (or any other) should have any affect on the rest of my life, or my use of technology. That argument is completely illogical. Just because I don't like change in one area of my life doesn't have any bearing on change in other areas of my life. I like watching my little girl grow up and change. I didn't like when they replaced Kirk Douglass with Bryan Dennehey in the Man From Snowy River series. It's completely illogical to think those should be related.

yeah some of the special effects looked pretty cheesy at times, and the massive underwater star wars battle they had was a little over the top as well, I still thoroughly enjoyed the flick tho.

You're completely wrong. Liking or disliking change in one area of life has absolutely no bearing on liking or disliking change in another area of life. It all depends on how big a part of your childhood you felt something was, what it meant to you, and what's happened since.
It's not the change that we don't like. It's the total departure we don't care for. Again, I like IDW's stuff overall. I liked Resolute. I don't think I'll care much for RoC. It's completely illogical to think those should be related. my point is RAH ended almost a 15 years ago. that was when your childhood was lost. how long are people going to moan about RAH ending. maybe you guys should have bought more toys in 1992-94 if it was that important to maintain it. the movie didn't do it. the movie is just another expansion of the brand that began in 2001. |

Really, really fun. Some good nods to fans. Sure, there were some cringe-worthy moments ('Celtic' is not a language...is there a reason they couldn't just say 'Gaelic'...and I'm not sure why the Raven's weapons were voice activated in the first place). But it was FUN, well paced, some characters/performances were nailed (Destro, Hawk, SE) some weren't great (I was not a fan of Tatum as Duke).
Baroness just oozed hawt every second she was onscreen. I will go see it again and enjoy having it on DVD. No, it's not a great film, not the best Joe movie that could've been, but it was fun.

As an action movie I give it three stars. As a Joe movie it gets 1.5 for effort. If this thing had actually had a story then I would have given it more. As it is (and I have a long post on Yo Joe of why I hated it ) I cannot rate it more. I really hope it pulls in enough money for the powers that be to say well it did gross a little bit, but what can we do to make it better. Maybe I placed too much into the movie or maybe my childhood was not meant to last into my late 30's. All I know is this, go in to see this movie as an action movie stand alone from the GI Joe of the comics andcartoons. This is not your GI Joe, it is the start of something new and unfortunately something that will not stand the test of time. Two years from now this will not even be worth recalling and your DVD copy will be collecting dust as you pop in the SHOUT! cartoon DVDs.
