Was any one bugged that Duke said he was a Captain yet his shoulder boards had the rank of Major?
There was some good but lots of Bad. I didn't like that everyone in Cobra was there against their will. Last edited by Knighthart; 08-07-2009 at 02:20 AM.. |

I just got back from seeing it with 2 other guys in their mid-30s (like me) but only vaguely familiar with Joe and a 13 year old boy who isn't a Joe fan. They all liked it. A lot more then they expected. The 13 yr old loved it. He was peppering me with questions afterward.
How did I like it? I thought it was okay. I liked the 2nd hafl of it better than the half. I guess it took me a bit to settle into it. Everything from the Paris scene on it pretty good. My least favorite parts are Duke and the lighting. I've seen Channing Tatum act well in other movies, but I think he's trying to hard to me "smoldering." I don't think he can hold his own against Miller, who is easily the best part of the movie. She makes me believe in their relationship while he never does. I think the action is all pretty interesting. I like that each Joe has something to do in the action scenes. I like the sheer amount of destruction and violence. There are a lot of casualties. But nothing glorious. Things to improve on in a sequel: -Slow things down just a bit. Give us a few more character moments. -I really didn't care for how the flashbacks were integrated, but I liked the material in them. I thought some of them were beating the nail on the head and some stuff could have just been mentioned in dialog. -Have the Joes meet up with specialists in each environment, which would expand the team a bit. -Cobra troopers in BLUE. It's just the start of Cobra, so we should see them in their new color scheme. -Cobra Commander's reveal. It's all set-up like a big reveal we should recognize. Then he turns around and everyone thinks, "Who is that?" They really need to fix that costume. I haven't heard one person support it. -SE's costume. While I don't mind the mouth, I hope they give him a mask more like his commando figure. Or more like Resolute. Also, lose the rubber suit. It looks like Park really had a hard time moving in the suit. -Wider shots for the SE vs SS scenes. Let's see the martial arts in action. Too many close-ups. I raid how in the SE introduction scene, Parks had an intricate sequence of moves and how eveyone was amazed he did it all in one take. Then in the movie, it's all edited up. It would be more impressive to see him go through a bunch of guys all in one shot. -Reduce Ripcord to piloting their ship. He can still be given some stuff to do, but if he's a pilot, they can fit some other Joes on the team. I didn't hate Ripcord in the movie, but I'm not eager to see him again. -Concentrate on someone else other than Duke. I fear we'll just see more Duke/Baroness stuff. At least let Tatum open up a bit with the character. Don't have him hold back so much. Overall, it's an enjoyable movie. It's not my favorite of the year, but it is the most enjoyable action film of the summer which is funny since it was the one film everyone was writing off. It sets up a nice world for the sequel which I hope happens. One last thing...Hasbro better make a much larger Cobra Gunship. Maybe as large as the Star Wars Gunship. It holds about 8 guys in the movie. Let's see something about twice as large. I think it would sell rather well, since it kicks butt in the movie. |

Well I've seen it!
Just got back from a screening that Norton's Anti Virus did for the company my brother works for. Let me say, if anyone is reading this from Norton's that it was top notch. They had a raffle for merchandise (including 3 Night Ravens and a black Timber SE's), free concessions and of course free movie tickets for an employee and a guest. Mucho fun! No, I didn't win anything and I tried to offer a guy that won a NR $20 but it was a no go as he wanted to give it to his nephew. I immediately backed away from the offer as they are afterall toys and I'm excited to see if kids get back into this line. On to the movie...... For me, and let me state right up front the rest of what I'm writing is IMO (duh) so take it for what it's worth. It is pretty much everything the reviews you've been reading have stated. I can't really say it any better. There are things that being a true Joe fan I might have had more issues with then some movie reviewers, but that also goes for things I liked more as well. Overall it is a fun movie. I enjoyed probably 75% of it and the rest could use some work. To brainstorm here are my disappointments.... DESTRO'S MASK. Absolutely the low point in the movie for me. Do you remember that shot that popped up several weeks/months ago of it? A lot of people were claiming it might not be legit, etc. Yep, it looks that horrible in the movie. I can't stand the ROC Destro figure, but the mask on that looks better than the one in the movie! The effects in some points look terrible also. They ARE movie quality effects, its just that some of them look like "B" movie effects. The Baroness and her ending. Don't really care where they took that and I wanted her to be the Baroness we've always enjoyed in the past. A big reason I say this is because she was probably the best character in the movie for me. I liked her the majority of the way up until the last 1/4 or so and then it takes a dive. Storm Shadow, pretty cool overall, and in this iteration he definitely doesn't seem to have a moral question about what he's doing. He's a bad guy and that's really it. Fine by me, but the suit from the day I saw it up to the figure as well,....I just have a hard time with the missed opportunity for awesomness he could have been. The actor who played him though was fantastic. I'm going to say the deaths as well. Trying not to give too much away with that statement let me just say I don't mind them at all. What I want to see in the next movie is that they have the balls to stick to one of them ('cause the other one isn't earth shattering) and we all know in this world (comics, cartoons, movies, etc) that might not be the case. If they DO have the balls to stick with it then I will reserve this comment for the "good" portion of the movie. The Paris Pursuit scene is mostly great. The problems I had with it were the van that the Joes are chasing Cobra in. I know, it seems trivial but it also seems kind of silly. Here we have Cobra racing around in a B.A. Crusher and the Joes are tooling around in a Volkswagon (or whatever it was) when they are the elite special forces of our countr...wait elite INTERNATIONAL force. I'm not saying I needed to see the Vamp (although that would have been great) but something more then the van they had. Also, I was coming around on the Accelerator Suits but when you see them in the movie they are kind of cool and still kind of dumb. I hope they get nixed overall for the sequel. Nixed and not replaced by some other kind of stupid form of gadgetry. Breaker, he's just kind of there and the eye thing looks cheesy. He doesn't wear it all the time so he gets better, and I didn't really mind that he was French, but he's forgettable. Channing Tatum is good 60% of the time. The rest he seemed like he was overacting or just out of place. Hard to put my finger on it exactly but he was decent. The planes for the Joes. Hated them. Hated them in the previews and it doesn't get any better in the movie. What you see in the preview, you know those aluminum looking things, that's it. I SO wish they would have redesigned them to look cooler and maybe threw something in like a Tomahawk or a transport like that. The good.....(anyone still reading, haha) Overall I think you will really enjoy this and it is a fun movie. Check yourself at one point during the film and realize you are watching a live action Joe film. It's pretty fun to think of it that way and some of the scenes are really cool. Scarlett, thought she was great. Rachel Nichols did a great job and it was cool that she had the crossbow. Marlon Wayans....yes I typed that in the GOOD section!?!?!?! Now, let me say, I am STILL not a fan that they made him Ripcord (I understand all that so don't start posting "but this is why," etc.) and I'm STILL not a fan that he was in the movie. I don't care for him overall so maybe that's my problem. I HAVE to give him credit as he did a great job and I was dreading all the stupid lines I thought they were going to give him or that I'd seen from the previews. The lines didn't bother me at all (there weren't as many as I expected), he acted great (better than Channing in some parts), and his character is actually likeable overall. The Night Raven, it was rad. From the moment they show it up until it explodes.....very cool. Snake Eyes, come on, I don't have to say much here. Ray Park was awesome though. The Vipers were great. I LOVED how they actually used the different classes in the movie. The Elite Viper is in there, the Commando, and the Eel. I didn't see a Crimson one but I think we all kind of thought that was a Hasbro thing for the toys. The Elites have been my favorites from the ROC line, they are the only one I've bought so far, and they are way cool in the movie. I was so impressed with the Commando's in the movie I believe I will be making this purchase on Sunday at the TRU sale, at least one. The Breaker part in Paris, in the van (won't say it all the way and it's a small thing) was a pretty cool nod to us Joe fans or the history of the character. Christopher Eccleston did a great job as Destro and I liked the accent. Some people may not, but I thought it was great. Again though, the mask is PATHETIC! Lastly ('cause I'm not even sure I can post this much haha) Cobra Commander! I thought overall as the Doctor or as CC, Joseph Gordon Leavitt's performance was great. A little shoddy before he's the Doctor or CC, but the voice, the makeup, his sinisterness (is that a word?), ALL great. I was really worried about this part of the movie and it completely surprised me. I will still say I'm not a fan of the mask (although it looks better in the movie) and I just have to hope they will change that in the sequel. A hood or a shielded mask would look excellent and fit right in I think. I'm not sure how the hood would work as you've all seen him in the previews and he's kind of like Vader (breathing apparatus) but I'll leave that up to someone in Hollywood to figure out. I could go in to several other categories but those are the main points that stood out to me or the things that maybe going in to it I wanted confirmation on the most. I enjoyed it and am heading back to see it this Wednesday when my local Joe buddy gets back in town. I'm looking forward to seeing it again to see if my likes/dislikes are the same. Thanks Tankers and I hope I didn't ruin anything for any of you. |
