The prequels were NOT filmed in the same manner as the originals - not even close! I did however like episodes 2 and 3.

They all have the same elements of story telling throughout the movies, the same formula

Well, I finally went to see the movie last night. Went to a drive through to see it which was a lot of fun.
Wow, where to begin. Well, my first gripe is movie related, but not based on the movie itself. The movie listing stated that the movie started at 10:40. I got to the drive-in at 10:15...and it had already started. Thankfully, it had just started (the convoy hadn't been attacked yet)...but that still irked me beyond belief.
You've all read the reviews and pros/cons...so I'm just going to say this right up front: These are my observations and are my personal opinion.
Now, on to the movie. Let's go!
Duke sparring with Snake Eyes...and knocking him to the floor? Uh...ok, if you say so.
Brendan "ZOMG Thank God Sommers keeps me employed" Frasier as ANY G.I.Joe character (even skidmark)...NO NO NO. The minute I saw him pull up on that quad I started singing George of the Jungle in my head.
I couldn't help but make a smart ass remark every time Duke tried to say something "powerful"...especially during his final interaction with Cobra Commander at the end of the movie...
Duke: "I'll be waiting"...
Me: ...to battle Cobra Commander in "Bring it on 2: Assault on Cobra Island!"
The whole Baroness/Duke/Rex thing..."I am your cousin's next doors neighbors uncles sisters husband's second nephew once removed and I'm here to dance battle!" (Sorry, I still can't let that go).
CGI - It's a sad effin' day when G-Force has better CGI than a Summer Blockbuster.
There were other things that didn't feel right, but I went to the movie with the understanding that this movie was never meant to be my G.I.Joe. That said, there were things I really enjoyed:
Chris E. as Destro - Loved it.
The Cobra Gunship - effin' loved it so much I had to go out and buy it today....And the damn Fisher-Price "My First Night Raven". So cool in the movie.
The underwater battle - I understand everyone's beef with the Star Wars feel to it, but it was still pretty cool for what it was.
Paris Pursuit - The suits weren't that bad and I was pleased with this entire scene....other than the CGI. The CGI made me sad...very sad...in the pantaloons.
Haters, take note: I understand where you're coming from. That said, rather than gripe about how this movie takes away from the rich history of G.I.Joe, I'm laying down the gauntlet - Let's take this opportunity to introduce the "New Class of Joedom" to the fantastic story that we grew up with...the one that RoC steered clear away from.
All in all, it was a fun movie to watch if "you" can completely detach yourself from everything you know about G.I.Joe and accept that this is a complete re-thinking of the G.I.Joe Universe.
All that said...the next movie better be 100 times better than what I saw last night. As of right now, I'm on the fence.

How did they steer away from the story we grew up with??
Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't the gi joe cartoon from the 80's basically Cobra as terrorists trying to take over the world?
The movie to me seemed to be the exact same thing.

There is a way to portray what we had in the 80s in a redone updated fashion, and what C.I.A.D states is true, they did steer 180 degrees off course and went the wrong way basically. It had some very promsiing parts just hammed up by too many other factors that caused it to run off the road and swerve back and forth waaay too much.
The generic feel of "terrorists just trying to take over the world" you mention is to general of a movie topic and can be applied to almsot anything made in the last 10 years Joe or not. You have to have more than that to come off properly to really land it well as true GI JOE. It does not have to be a copy but if your going to remix it you better bring your big guns which Sommers left in the toy box. It also does not have to be 100 muslims in burquas running amok in Iraq with a nuke and GI JOE goes to chase them down as standard military soliders in some Green Beret special ops group either. It needs to be all of that and more including the storires and dangers the Joes and Cobras faced from thier very diverse and deep heritages from all of the lines. There are so many options and they just chose ones that were not too appealing and decided to interject way too many ad-libed changes to get some new reaction.
I agree with CIAD, the sequal better bring the heat. I liked most of what they had to present and the concepts and overall feel was sorta ok but it is sure not what I wanted to see. Especially in the Viper and vehicle departemnt for both sides. Why did they not have more Rhinos? Those vehicles were badass looking at the first when the gunship nails em, The paris chase scene would have been better having duke and ripcord hamming it up in a Rhino hauling ass behind Snake Eyes and the Scarab/Steel Crusher plowing over BMWs and Audis with Heavy Duty on top with Ol Painless unleashing a hail of lead in all directions....
This buds for you if you can make a sequal and steer clear of what they just tried to pawn off as GI JOE. I have a lot of hope and have a lot of I know they are not going to get the message to chnage so who knows, well see I guess.

Saw it a second time tonight. It held up pretty well upon a second viewing. It's really just a fun film and a whole new mythos. Despite the liberties taken, I can respect it for what it is.

Easily. The basic premise is there, but the history behind the characters isn't. It's a completely different take on the G.I.Joe Mythos. It definitely incorporates aspects of the original but doesn't hold true to the source material.
This has been the "hater" complaint and I understand why. My suggestion is that rather than just be part of the problem, we can be part of the solution. Explain to those who aren't familiar with the history of G.I.Joe why The Baroness/Rex/Duke/Bebe's Kids/Koko B. Ware/Grimace aren't related and why it makes no sense to have them as such, even for hollywood's sake. I would have rather seen a "Rise of Cobra" that didn't include some random love triangle as it's "meaty" subplot.

Saw the flick on my birthday.
Now...I've been VIOLENTLY against this movie. Besides Ray Park, I hated the cast. The more plot leaks that burst forth made the movie sound worse than Sigma Six
Here I am, eating crow.
I F'N LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!
My only gripe was little things. Baroness was actually a good guy being mind controlled? Destro has a techno-organic mask? Snake Eyes has a mouth? Cobra Commander ends up sounding like Megatron? (The voice he used through out the movie was perfect, up til the end)
And yes, I'll also admit this...Little Man was my favorite in the movie.
Yup... I said it.

So I just saw the G.I. Joe ROC movie today, and let me tell you, it was unbelievable!
First off, I really liked the flashbacks that the characters had like when SE and SS had flashbacks about their past. I thought that was pretty cool.
Another thing that was awesome was Snake Eyes. I wasn't sure what he would be like but when I saw him coming out of the plane, I was like "Watch our Cobra!". He was probably my favorite character besides Hawk.
Speaking of Hawk, I thought he did a great job as General. It was cool seeing him in the room with Destro at the beginning and then seeing him again at the PIT.
I also liked the tie-ins with the ARAH era. Like the "Real American Hero" quote and I forgot the other one but it was also cool.
Anyways, non-stop action throughout the whole movie, I was on the edge of my seat when Ripcord hit the last warhead at the last minute and then the communication was dropped, that was awesome. Then the laughter came when Ripcord was like "Oh great, now I'm going to get arrested again".
Speaking of Ripcord, he was the funniest guy in that movie and was awesome as an actor! One of my favorite characters.
The Cobra's were also cool, Rex and Destro were completely awesome and so was Zartan. I loved the ending, makes it really easy for a sequel.
So, I rate this movie 5 stars out of 5, it was full of action, suspense, and even humor. All the parts of a great movie!
