Background: Played with GI Joe action figures as a youth. Watched the cartoons every morning. Currently own the new cartoon DVD set. Owned 1 or 2 comic books, but mostly unaware of the comic storylines. Recently read a new release book giving details of the character's background stories through the comic books.
I also never bothered to find out who Joseph-Gordon Levitt was before watching this movie. As soon as he showed up on the screen, I instantly recognized him from Angels in the Outfield. I still didnt know what his name was. That was a good thing because I was generally surprised by his role in the movie as it was revealed, but more on that dissapointment later.
I'll have to admit, the text at the bottom of the movie screen set me up to be dissapointed somehow from the beginning. It read. "Sometime in the near future" Throughout the whole movie, Im saying to myself, yeah right, try the VERY VERY DISTANT future. That line should have just been avoided altogether. Clearly this was a cartoon universe with all the unrealistic GI JOE tech. So, I was slightly tee'd off there that they insulted my intelligence.
I was expecting to see the Joe team formed from scratch before my eyes. I was very dissapointed to see it was already in existence and Duke wasnt even on the team yet. I loved how the Joes came in six guns and lasers a blazin. The look and sounds of the convoy attack was great.
Then Baroness came out and ......BLACK SCREEN...........wtf..........then movie waiting music.........WHAT!!! The projector crashed and cut out right as Baroness came out. The whole theater was soo ticked off. Finally a guy went out to report the error, and some guy came up to fix it. We waited like 8 minutes or so. Fortunatly the old man was smart enough to restart the movie where it left off. Of course no offer to refund the money after forever scaring the movie experience I waited my whole life for.
So Baroness is back running and gunning. Now, from a movie trailer I had heard the Baroness' American accent. I was hoping that was a fluke. It wasnt. I slowly started to get upset. Especially after I watched an interview with her and Rachel Nichols and Sienna has a British accent. Then Baroness and Duke are acting like they know each other, in the Biblical sense. Im like, what?
The actor playing Duke, I hated him. This guy is lame. Nowhere near the Duke from the cartoons in voice, or anything else. He looked and acted like he should have been a noname Joe grunt. They gave him cool stuff to do, and it still didnt help my opinion of him. After just watching Star Trek perfectly cast the character for Capt Kirk and Spock, I was utterly dissapointed with his casting by the time the movie ended. The fact that they dared to start the GI Joe team without him further ruined his character, but then somehow appropriate because he was so lame, they didnt need him to start the team with.
Heavy Duty was ok. Throughout the whole movie it seemed as if he was the leader instead of Duke. That, and his accent seemed out of place for the role. His body was perfect for it though, good grief. Props to him for getting to utter the Yo Joe line, the only time in the movie we got to hear it I think.
Ripcord, ugh. Wayans must have insisted on getting some heavy flirt action, kiss, the best scenes with Scarlett (exercising) because of his "star power". There was the one scene where Scarlett is leaning on Snake Eyes in the background lovingly, as it should be. Wayans was a total dissapointment, and throughout the whole movie, Im saying to myself, was this even a real character or did they make him up? Why he was Duke's best buddy and not Flint or something, I dont know. The truth is, I couldnt see anyone but a Wayans as I watched him act. That is the sign of a bad actor when he cant truly make you believe he's the character he's playing.
Scarlett be thy name. Oh my, by far the hottest Joe of all time. Covergirl was a plain chick, and the Baroness was really sporting a rubber chest, so the award goes to Scarlett. Even the fake red hair was dyed believably (unlike MJ in Spiderman 1). While other characters dragged the movie's grade down, she helped pull it back up to a B- in my eyes. That actress could do no wrong in that movie. If you hated the movie, it was worth the ticket price just to see her. Why is all the attention going to Sienna Miller, Rachel totally stole the hotness show in my opinion.
Snake Eyes. Perfect. The mouth was a little odd. It made you think he couldnt breath in the full rubber face thing. I was hoping for an explanation, but it never came, oh well. Another character worth the price of admission to watch. I was hoping he would shed the winter coat and show us the whole white suit in all its glory. If they did, I missed it. I wonder which is more blinding to the actor, Snake Eyes visor or Geordi LaForge visor from Star Trek TNG?
Flint, where was he? I thought for a moment Brendan Fraiser was, because I missed his name when they said it. He should have been, he looked the part.
Shipwreck, where was he? You have all those water scenes and the Joe team attacking an underwater Cobra base, a giant Joe sub, and a quick shot of the carrier FLAG, yet no Navy SEAL to give several navy jokes and quips? Totally missed opportunity there. I see Torpedo in the toy lineup, was he mentioned in the movie? I missed it.
Wild Bill. Before the convoy scene, Duke calls some guy Bill. Then you see the two Apache choppers and unknown pilots. I thought maybe one of those guys was about to be Wild Bill, untill they blew the Apaches to pieces.
Baroness. Totally mixed emotions here. As I mentioned earlier, you have an actress with a great British accent, yet you tell her to play it American? She could have been everything in the movie they said she was, only from Britain so we could hear her accent. There was no good reason she had to start out playing American. The whole Duke and Baroness love triangle was totally lame considering their cartoon and comic backgrounds. I did believe Duke getting her brother killed caused her to go rogue. But, she was a normal chick before that (no military background it seemed) and going international terrorist after was a huge stretch. I read long ago Baroness would be wearing a rubber chest to fill in the role. So, I couldnt lust after her the way I could have. Instead, Im staring at her chest looking for the fakeness the whole movie. Two quick shots I saw it. Her neckline twice exposed where the makeup ended and her real skin began. Should be easier to spot when you get the DVD. One scene showed her chest one color, and neck up, she was more pale. In the wig and "glasses", she looked great. At the end, when she snaps out of the Cobra trance, I was happy and sad at once. Shes really nothing more than an alzheimers patient now, because we all know shes going to snap out of loving Anna mode and go back to Baroness mode. So, I feel my emotions for her are wasted because she must always be truly a villain. A failed character reboot in my eyes. Overall I give her a C (or were those Ds?). Where Scarlett gets an A+
Cobra Commander= dissapointment. As Im watching the "doctor" Im totally thinking Im watching Dr Mindbender. When I saw Angel in the Outfield go into the building to get blown away, I thought that actor is toast. So, not doing enough research I was generally surprised to learn he was the Commander, then the disapointment began. I kep waiting to see the Commander thinking wow, this movie is almost over, where is he? That eyeglass thing on his respirator looked Mindbenderish. Ok, so Baroness and the Commander are brother and sister, ok, lame, but ok. Where they totally blew it was when Duke and Anna are in the mini sub taking it to Cobra Commander and Destro, Duke yells out "Im going to get you Rex" Um wait, Anna didnt recognize Duke just yelled her dead brother's name? Gigantic goofup there since Anna isnt supposed to know who the "Commander" is. The fact that I dont like Levitt as an actor, I thought it was fitting he played a weasel Commander. Voice was god enough. The fact that we arent told he wasnt the Commander until the end of the movie was lame. The fact that he exposed his face to us was VERY lame. His new mask, lame.
Destro. Very good. I bought everything he was selling. I even thought the nanite silver mask was believeable since I thought through the whole movie they were about to go The Man in the Iron Mask on us. The silver makeup was a relief for me. 10 times better than the Commanders.
The Pit. A bit of a stretch. All the different levels with the Sea level in the middle of the complex and not the bottom bothered me for some reason. But, it made you think of the cartoon and was pretty faithful to a cartoon Joe base. Even though the "Pit" isnt in the early cartoons, if at all, Im waiting for the next DVD set because I have forgotten. Egypt was an acceptable location, but then, it wasnt, Im mixed on that.
Real American Hero AWOL. In a trailer, we hear Baroness say the line. Unless I missed it, and I was looking hard for it, that scene never happens in the movie? Edited out? Put in the trailers just to appease American audience? What gives?
Gen Hawk, I liked him, enough said. For a moment I thought Zartan was going to clone him, but later we see it was the british American President. I dont know if it was just the guys voice and he cant help it, but the guy playing our Prez was totally unbelievable because he always plays british roles and has a great voice for that, not American.
Zartan, good enough.
Covergirl, unattractive (grade F). Then they run her through and kill her. Oh well, she didnt look the part and Im not sure if I ever heard them actually call her CoverGirl. Still, not smart to kill off one of the few female Joes we have.
Storm Shadow. Too much face, not enough mask. His "death" was lame and unbelievable. We know he's coming out of that stab-fall into the water ending. Finish the job Snake and take his head off, lol. Just kidding, we cant go killing main characters. I guess thats why the off'd Covergirl, to make us believe the empty threat the main characters ae actually in danger of death, when we all know they must live for the sequels.
Set design and tech, great but clearly cartoonish when trying to pass off as reality or near current day.
Plot, meh. I like how the Eiffel Tower fall was a hint to the first Joe cartoon miniseries. Not sure if that was on purpose or not.
I think I covered everything I wanted to say. Overall Im going to watch the sequels, the movie wasnt that bad. I left the theater feeling neutral about it. After the bar was raised so high with a successful Star Trek reboot, the Joe "reboot" (because they rewrote Joe canon) came off flat. I would assume the sequel will surpass the first movie, I hope.
Breaker, so unforgettable I almost forgot to mention him. So, I wont bother rating him.

I couldn't stand Chris Pine as Capt. Kirk. Almost ruined the whole movie for me.
The Baroness does know The Doctor/Commander is her brother during the Mantis scene. Duke calls him Rex and she goes "what" or something. After that though...

"Duke calls him Rex and she goes "what" or something."
Too much shooting, I didnt hear her respond to Duke. If "what" was her only response, still lame, and appearently easily missed, if it happened.

Was anyone completely satisfied with it? I was expecting it to keep going after Zartan walked into the presidents office. That was a huge cliffhanger in my opinion.

It isn't opinion, it was a fact.
The movie had a cliff hanger ending.
Personally, I didn't hate ROC, but I couldn't have taken another hour of it.

Been told you're not a 'true fan' have you? Had you mental state questioned have you?
And that last sentence made me laugh, for all the wrong reasons. Think I'll be sticking with Joebattlines.com - Haven't seen an attitude like yours over there yet.

I think CC and Destro shouldn't have gotten caught at the end.

I think the film is one of those you have to make and get through to make an even better sequel, now that everything has been set up.
"Duke wasn't born. He was Government Issued."

With regard to Baroness' accent (or lack of), its because she was written as the brother of Rex and fiancee of Duke. I believe even Hama stated that he never wrote the character with an accent.
The Real American Hero line was given to Rex, instead, in the Duke/Ana proposal scene.
Cover Girl (Karolina Kurkova) not attractive?!? We all have our own tastes, I guess...but its kind of like reading "I would have rated Transformers higher if I didn't have to look at Megan Fox's ugly mug throughout the movie."
I'd give it a B/B- too, but for different reasons. Only thing I really agree with is the bad CGI in spots (particularly the Joe aircraft).

Im glad sad the movie had the right length. There is no story that can't be told in a 2 hours.
I remember while seeing TF2 asking my buddy how much longer that mess takes. Man, was i bored as he told me there is still 1 hour to go through :(
But i'm open for a extended DVD version of both movies.
