I know there are 100 threads about the movie, but I figured mine would get lost in the crowd so I started as new one that can be merged at a later date.
I liked it better than I thought I would. My son loved it. The theater was about 3/4 full which was more than I expected since it was the fourth showing of the day. Even my wife's little cousin loved it, and she had never heard of GI Joe.
*Thought Sienna Miller was great as the Baronness, even without an accent.
*The Doctor- I liked him a lot. He seemed pure evil. JGL did a fine job and seemed to have fun with it.
* Breaker- I went in figuring that he would be a crap character, and I actually ended up liking him. Too bad the fig doesn't have glasses.
* Storm Shadow - I thought he was badass, wish he was in it more especially against snake eyes.
* Zartan - another character that I thought I would hate, and didn't get enough screen time. Never like Zartan as a kid, but liked how they set up the sequel.
* The fun feel of the movie. It was well paced, and I thought the nods to the original series were nice. One of the negative reviews I had read talked about how they yelled Yo Joe throughout the movie, but by my count it was just Heavy Duty @ the end.
*The CGI at the beginning was awful. At first I thought that the movie was going to be horrible, but once they got into the pit montage it wasn't nearly as noticeable or distracting (except Destro's mask)
* Channing Tatum- Zzzzzzzz
* Baroness ********SPOILERS *******
turning good at the end- Booooo
* The whole Duke/Baroness/Doctor connection. I hated when everyone was connected in the comics, and didn't like it here either.
* Disappointed in Chris Eccleston- as a fan of Doctor Who I thought he would be the best part of this movie. I thought he was too bland.
* The big CC reveal. What a let down.
* SE mouth. I found it distracting.
The kids seemed to love every minute of it, I have seen much better movies. Glad I went and would go again though to see what I missed the first time around. Wayans wasn't as annoying as the commercials made him out to be, and the Jar Jar comparisons had to have been made solely off of the trailers. The romance that people had fits about was non existant (a good luck kiss for christ's sake) and even the accelerator suit bit while cheesy wasn't bad. A lot of the annoyances I had were because of the origin story. It also looked like Citizen Kane compared to the giant pile of shit that was TF2:
For the sequel I would use ILM to fix the cgi problems, introduce a real CC costume, and make Channing Tatum go to acting lessons. More Stormy v. anybody would be a plus, and get rid of SE mouth.

Look at it this way, less people sitting in front of me means less obscurity to see the film. I could see everything in front of me and therefore can make my judgment accordingly.

Well thought out review, thanks for sharing and I do agree the CGI needed some work.

I totally loved it. The animation at points were a bit shabby but overall totally awesome.

Gunslinger was NEVER a "lover" of the film, he has been consistent in his belief that the movie should be SEEN first before people go spouting off about it. He has always been one who has valued logical argument over hyperbolas internet diarrhea.

I can say this for a difference..... Lucas himself said that Star Wars wasn't made to watch over and over again, it was ment to enjoy and move on. If you are a laserdisc owner check out the definitave collection and you will hear him say it. GI Joe on the other hand seemed to me that it was the kind of movie if you watched again you would find all kinds of new easter eggs in it. I'm just saying it was a fun movie but I wouldn't expect it to have anybody nominated for an Oscar.... like with the Star Wars films.

I've gotta say, there were so many easy layups that Sommers missed in this movie. Just little fanwanks that would have really made it feel more "GI Joe" and made it really pop for me.
-All those training scenes with a crowd of Joes: Why the hell wouldn't you made a couple of them recognizable? Maybe a guy with a watch cap and a parrot? Or a guy with a mustache and a Rottweiler? A chick throwing javelins, maybe?
- The scenes in the equipment rooms of the Pit: Maybe show some REAL Joe equipment? They could easily have stuck in a Havoc, or WHALE, or Devilfish.
-Wild Bill driving the plane. Should have been a no-brainer.
-Scenes with Joe doctors that WEREN'T DOC?!
Whew... I needed to vent a sec there. Overall, I wasn't crazy about the movie. IT was fun, sure. But will I run out to see it again? no. I'm probably going to see it next weekend with some friends (who didn't go last night) with the sole purpose to just MST3K the hell out of it. I do agree that it was very much like an episode of the cartoon, or one of the miniseries (Cobra superweapon, introduce new Joes, Duke gets captured, etc.) but after Resolute, I'm afraid I'm spoiled. A Joe movie could have been made better.
OH yeah, and if you set off explosives in ice, ICE DOESN'T FUCKING SINK!!!
It was nice to see the Flagg though. (and I noticed that it had the split-bow from the Resolute Flagg)

Well put my fellow californian! I have been a serious joe collector for years and I had no problem with them freshing up the mythos that is GI Joe. It is 2009 and like Transformers, it needed a face lift in this day and age. The movie did not tear apart my childhood or my reason to live. Yes, those accelerator suits were cheesy but it did not ruin the movie. The same argument that was thrown out when the first transformer movie came out about no G1 continuity seems to plague this first gi joe movie about it not sticking to its true roots. While Transformers is limited on where they can improve literally, the next GI Joe movie and yes I said next GI Joe movie has plethora of options that will go beyond peoples rants of what Cobra Commander is wearing or what Destro looks like. The back stories albeit tweaked give people not familiar with GI Joe at least a understanding of why things are. Continued success for GI Joe depends on the younger generation and less so on us as time goes by as much as we want to believe how important we are. Try seeing the movie in the eyes of a kid of today not as you first saw GI Joe as a kid so many years ago. Those are your memories and allow the younger generation to have theirs....and then tell them their wrong!....just kidding.

Thanks for the comment for me guys:
My mistake about the cargo pants. What i meant was he is wearing a little loose pants/ i prefer the fit one to look more like a ninja. He is fat coz of the costume i guess.
I also get distracted abouth his mouth.
