I just saw the movie and I liked it. No it isn't a masterpiece, no it isn't going to win a lot of awards, and no some of the story choices I would not have done. But over all it was an good movie, one that I enjoyed. At least I didn't want to get up and leave in the middle of it, like I did in Transformers. To me GIJOE is a whole lot better than transformers, not that it takes much, this is the one you should see. At least GIJOE did not have to have a bunch of perverted jokes like Transformers. I thought Quaid was a great Hawk. I was happy Hawk was even in it. I figured they would make Duke the leader. I just hope the next one Hawk has a bigger part. GIJOE is an enjoyable movie.

I just wanted to point out that #'s 1, 3 & 6 are straight from the comics.
1.The first Snake Eyes costume had him in similar pants 3. Stormy showed his face many times in the comic 6. The baroness shot Storm Shadow three times in the back and even Snake Eyes thought he was dead, but he still came back when Cobra created Serpentor 11. Looks like they probably combined the Hard and Soft Masters into one person, I didn't see what the credits said so I don't know if they actually called him the Hard Master or not And thre's a lot of merged characters.

I have seen this film, and I don’t need to see this again.
For me, in viewing this film, has to be observed in two ways, 1) as GI Joe history/mythos set aside and for it as an action movie, 2) as a GI Joe fan and what it means to me. The rebuttal of seeing this movie through children’s eyes is hogwash and analogous to watching this film with blinders on. I am not saying that the plot was bad, in contrary it is classic good guy vs. bad guy; classic Cobra has the weapon, GI Joe has to disarm it. Anyone who has read the comic books or watched the cartoons would have done the same. All those who are unrefined towards GI Joe will see this film as an action packed sci-fi blockbuster and those who are sophisticated GI Joe fans will find errors in the sub plot and their findings will drive their opinions. This film is jammed packed with CGI special effects, has to many references to Star Wars, and is made for children. My ARAH GI Joe figs are in better shape than the actors/characters portrayed in this film. Tatum seemed childish and plastic in his Duke role, Ripcord the comic relief and the Gilligan to Tatum’s Skipper even though Hawk was the Skipper, Scarlett’s chemistry with Ripcord and lack-of with Snake Eyes, Snakes Eyes lips are too noticeable when he stands still and the children stealing and fighting back-story is reminiscent of Kun Fu Panda, Destro didn’t fit his size portrayed in the comic and cartoon line, too many Vader clichés and what’s with the gimp for the commander, “El Comadante”, Storm Shadow is mask-less through a majority of the film and puts his sword together reminiscent of Darth Maul, Zartan whistles while he works majority of his film time, and Baroness is under mind control to be bad ass and has no accent. The biggest dilemma for me was CC, Destro, and Storm Shadow being unmasked. The essence of these characters is their masks; they can be anybody. There is something fundamentally wrong by them removing their masks and displaying their ID to their enemy. So what is the point of them wearing a mask in the first place? Mask wearing equates to life-support; that is a blatant duplication of Star War. Like many others, I am a big fan of the masked characters of this toy line. For this masked men reason, the Cobra line in the 80’s became popular and remained so. In regards in putting out an anticipated film 25 years latter, you DO NOT make drastic changes to characters in this way, it’s false to the fans. Example, the gray and blue Destro varieties, he was not in the film, while the suit Destro figure is the film character, so how can the suit one be the rare variant, when he is the common in the film? Just because there is less of a certain variety, does not make it only rare. Hasbro reversed the table to collectors with respect to that. The writers/producers are obvious Star Wars fans. George Lucas must be so proud of Sommers and his homage to Star Wars through this film. Nanomites are the “FORCE” in this film, which are a resemblance to Midi-chlorians. Midi-chlorians are supernatural microorganisms “symbiotic beings living in your blood” which channels super abilities to a person and Nanomites are Robotic microorganisms that have the ability to mind control, destroy, and replicate in metallic form. Therefore, someone that is good wielding the Nanomites will do good and conversely someone that is bad wielding the Nanomites will do harm. “May the Nanomites be with you”! The scenery of the film is also reminiscent to Star Wars film location. The scene in the Arctic Circle and a polar bear is there, I was waiting for a Hoth Wampa to dart in for the kill, or the scene of the underwater base, and I was waiting for Jar Jar to swim by with a Large Dinosaur chasing him. The underwater battle scene is reminiscent to the Return of the Jedi Death Star space battle complete with a large cannon firing at everyone. I was waiting for a “Red 5 standing by” signal before the attack. Just think if they used a swamp and an underwater base, we would be on Naboo. The originality of this film is plagued by remnants from Star Wars. GI Joe in this film has been transformed into a Star Wars Sci-Fi-ish, Superhero. Therefore, originality in this film is nothing more than previously seen copies from Star Wars. This film is a blatant attempt to make more money on something we are all familiar with. The lack of source material and the cry for change through “Creative Freedom” equates to we all loss as GI Joe fans. Steven Sommers has succeeded in changing something so original as GI Joe into a Star Wars clone. Instead of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra for the title, they should have named the film G.I. Joe: M.A.R.S. Attacks, oh wait they used that title already. Paramount is full spectrum in filmmaking. Bottom line, Paramount puts out a Star Trek re-boot with characters that all look the same as their original counterparts, with an original plot driven script, and quality actors/acting to do the job while GI Joe has major character changes, too many Star Wars references, and less than quality actors/acting. We now know why Star Trek was released in the beginning of the summer and why GI Joe was released at the end. Star Trek was at warp factor 7 while GI Joe was at impulse drive. The theater screen room max capacity was for 290 people and only 43 showed up to view this film at 2:40pm yesterday, if this can tell you anything of the acknowledgement this film will receive. I have seen this film, and I don’t need to see this again. Last edited by Firefly007; 08-08-2009 at 09:48 AM.. |

I mean really...I am a lover of all things joe, huge collector, watched the cartoons religiously, but oh man, this movie was terrible. A lot of people keep saying the acting was good, which leads me to believe you all have'nt watched many movies, huh? The action all around was so bad, so bad in fact, that Brendon Frasier was actually a stand out performance! Duke was insanely bad, and at several points in the film, people laughed at lines that were meant to be heartfelt. The effects were garbage as well....you can only watch people get launched through the air after getting hit by lazers so many times. As for any of the decent effects, guess what, you already saw them ALL in just about evey commercial for this movie. But the biggest atrocity this film commits is that it became such an amazingly obvious Star Wars rip off that I was predicting scenes that hadn't happened yet, based on what happens in Episode 4. It was a horrible waste of time, and my desire to buy the movie based figures is at an all time low.

After reading the reviews on here I REALLY thought this movie would be better than everyone expected. I went in expecting the worst hoping to be surprised. Instead I was sorely disappointed. The CGI was poor at times, certain lines like "Oh my Gosh." - Apache pilot being killed were delivered with NO emotion, other lines were cheesey but not in a good fun way. I hated how Scarlett was presented as a bit of a hussie, and many of the story line changes were just dumb to me. So now Cobra Commander is the guy from 3rd Rock from the Sun, and he's only in his early 20's as a character in the movie wtf? Why do CC and Destro BOTH have to have mauled faces to wear masks? I didn't like the changes to Snake Eyes' background (I prefer the comic story where he's a war vet to him being an orphan). I was annoyed that Scarlett is now Ripass's love interest. But enraged that a nothing character like "Ripcord" not only played the role of main character but also replaced other characters. Now he is "Ace" b/c he's the best pilot? Channing Tatum's push his chin out and say every line like an Alabama football jock displayed some of the worst acting I've ever seen (I live in AL so I feel safe drawing that comparison.) Finally I thought that the U.S. military's portrayal in the movie was embarassing. The flashback ripoff of Blackhawk Down (they used the same footage of the 160th SOAR even) showed poor tactics to match low grade actors. I had bought tickets for Friday and Saturday nights to bolster sales of the movie, but now I understand why the theater wasn't even half full on opening night despite the Rave theater being packed. I am so upset with this movie when I walked into my house at midnight I threw all my RoC figures into a plastic container and don't care to see them again. Resolute will act as the G.I. Joe movie I wanted, and I'll pray the maers of it get some of the money to continue the franchise that this movie undeservedly earns. Curse the writers, and especially the director for this steaming pile of bovine fecal matter.

are we sure Frazier played Stone/ I could have swore I heard them say Sgt. Stalker.. but the scene passed so quick as you say It was hard to be sure.
I actually liked Breaker quite a bit.. but I agree with most everything else you said.. It wasn't terrible.. and I can see how a new generation of Kids will LOVE this thing and that's what is important.

The movie was not nearly as bad as the negative internet buzz and the critics have made it out to be. It was dumb but it didn't apologize for it at least, that's bonus points in my book (I love Congo and Independence Day for the same reason). Dr Rex Lewis was the crappiest most poorly written character in the movie... the accelator suits were even more ridiculous than i was already expecting them to be... and the bit where the nanomites broke down the suited up Nitro Viper's face AFTER the needles impaled his skull was just seriously gross, bleh
Some of the movie worked well in my mind, some of it didn't. Zartan was way underutilized though IMO. and Wayans was nowhere near as annoying as I was expecting him to be. |

I had to go see the movie a second time because the movie broke. This is why bootlegs are starting to become better than going to the damn movies.
Well just like transformers 2, it had its bunch of useless scenes as well. They had to dumb it down for the rest of the public to go see. Then again everything today is just like that. Anyway they did have a bunch of homages to the original line like the SHARKS they had in the movie. It was a updated version of the old. And a few more things which i wont spoil was there too. Just go ahead and re-release the damn thing, I wish they would stop teasing me with that. |
