I've only recently become a G.I. Joe fan, mainly through hearing about it from friends who are into the comics (I'm a big comics fan but read other stuff, so found out through osmosis more than anything else lol) but this film made me even more of one, and now I want to learn more about the characters and the world. I enjoyed it a lot! Sure it's not an all-time classic or gonna win any Oscars, but it wasn't intending to, anyway. It was meant to be fun and have cool visuals with lots of things going boom and sexy Snake Eyes kicking butt :P And it mostly accomplished what it set out to do.
It never got TOO campy for its own good and none of the characters ever got TOO irritating, which is more than I can say for a couple of the human characters in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Somehow they managed to keep it appropriately over the top but didn't cross the line into insulting the audience's intelligence. Even though some of the things in it were really predictable, like what happened with the President toward the end and who "Rex" was (keep in mind I didn't read spoilers), but in spite of that and a plot that isn't all that cohesive if you look at it too closely it kept me interested throughout. The way they handled the ending with "Rex" taking his rightful place and Destro truly becoming Destro makes me want to see a sequel. Interestingly, the film really revolved around the Baroness, and to a lesser extent, Scarlett as well, more than even Duke or the boys. That was something I appreciated a lot because usually the female characters get sidelined in action films like this that are supposedly "for the boys." I thought Sienna and Rachel did well in their roles, though I REALLY wish they would've kept in their entire fight scene. I heard it got cut down quite a bit from the full take. Oh well. Maybe it'll be there in the Blu-Ray. I didn't really care all that much for Channing Tatum's Duke, to be honest. I just found him lacking in charisma, a bit too stoic and frankly, I just don't see what the Baroness saw in him lol But then again they can't all be Snake Eyes! Speaking of Snake Eyes... the lips on the mask? Ok seriously, WHY?? I mean, really. It just looked kinda silly. I almost cheered out loud when Cover Girl got stabbed through the chest by Zartan lol Call me wicked but her acting made me cringe, but what do you expect from a supermodel with no acting talent? Finally, as far as the duels between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow go, I kinda wished they would've pulled the camera back just a teeeensy bit so we could make out the moves better. I LOVE martial arts in films but so many directors nowadays focus in too closely on the action that it sometimes gets hard to see how one person is attacking the other and how the other is defending, countering, etc. All in all though, I was one happy fangirl! |

I thought it was cool. Certainly better than Transformers 2.
I was skeptical about Cobra Commander beforehand, but he was easily the best part. I only wish they hadn't made his voice deeper when he put on his new mask at the end. It was deep enough as it was. |
