I just read this article and found this paragraph pretty interesting. It sounds like this movie could be the surprise hit of the summer.
"Based on pre-release audience polling, the PG-13-rated "G.I. Joe" is already exciting male moviegoers. Two executives at rival studios agreed that the film will open to at least $50 million at the box office in the U.S. and Canada and could go higher." I'll take a guess, with all the marketing they have done for this thing, it will come in at between $75 and $100 mil opening weekend.
I think it will do ok. the more I see commercials, the better it looks.

I think $55 million is reasonable.

Anywhere between 55-65 million
Best case scenario is a 70-75 mil weekend...it's possible, but not as likely as 55-65 |

the one thing G.I. Joe has going for it, and it is big, is that this past weekends top movie, Funny People, opened with the lowest number one weekend of the summer, a paltry $23 million. so, not only is nothing opening this weekend to compete with G.I. Joe, nothing is carrying over from this past weekend to compete with it either. it is G.I. Joe or nothing essentially (with a segment of women and Hisstank whiners going to see Julie and Julia).
G.I. Joe couldn't be in a better position this weekend. compare that to, say, Speed Racer, that had its entire audience cannibalized by Iron Man carrying over to the second week as well, and you can see why this is important. I say $50-55 million. |
