I know most of you Hisstankers out there are probably tired of the ROC posts, but after reading several threads and seeing everyone's posts there are some things that I think we should keep in perspective.
1) Although many opinions differ about every part of this movie, it has brought G.I. JOE back to life (to the non-collector's world ) in the mainstream lifestyle. The Toy line had been " out of style " since 1990. This can only be a good thing for fans of all ages. Not just the collector's, but to all the young kid's (about the ages we were back in 1982 when the Joe boom really took off ) who probably never would have cared at all about G.I. JOE. I mean , let's face it, the 25th anniversary line really appealed to the collectors and most middle-aged men my age ( 33 - 43 ). The kid's out buying action figures would pass up the Joes to get Star Wars, Batman, Marvel, Transformers, Ben 10, etc......... Why ??? Because for the last 17-18 years, G.I. Joe has not been focused on appealing to the mass audience. All the other toy lines had cartoons and /or movies that kept the characters alive. ( Even Resolute is unknown to the mass market ) I mean, come on.........Sgt Savage ? Spy Troops ? Sigma 6 ? Valor Vs. Venom ? Hasbro made no effort to promote these ideas to anyone. Very little media, and the figures were terrible ( mostly ). However, they sure did keep a level of interest out for Tranformers with Beast Wars and the new Animated series ( mainly aimed at kids since the animation is terrible ). The fact of the matter is ROC is a great thing for the G.I. JOE world. 2) I think it is very important to remember (like it or love it), this is only one translation for a group of Characters that we all know & love from the 1980's. If every JOE fan sat down and wrote a script for a new film, I guarantee there would be an unlimited number of Ideas and disagreements. This can be proven with the amount of fans that only buy the figures to customize in their own visions and imagination. Proving that no matter what Hasbro / Paramount would have come up with, not everyone would be happy. 3 ) I also feel that everyone that hates this movie is really keeping a closed mind. Let's face it, as entertaining as the 1980's comics & cartoons were, they were definitely low brow dialogue and story lines. Marvel pumped those comics out to help Hasbro keep introducing new figures and vehicles. Now don't get me wrong, I have all the toon's and comics and still enjoy them today. But a lot of the complaints of this new movie just don't hold a lot of merit when you cut on the script and CGI and other story twists. And if you ask me, the new comics are killing any of the other Comic strains that have popped up over the last 10 years for G.I. JOE. ( Even the classic comics) Better storys, better characters, much superior art, the only downside is the very short issues and they are not really created for the young fans. 4 ) I think everyone who is passing up on the ROC figures now will be sorry. Yes, the oversized weapons are a bit too much for the older fans like myself, but I can only imagine that young boys must love these. Shooting weapons ? I would have loved these back in the 80's to play with. The figures come with many other interesting weapons and gear to make the characters more posable and unique. I can only hope that Hasbro can still keep a bit of 25th anniversary alive along with ROC. 5 ) Thanks to Hasbro for finally taking G.I. JOE seriously again and putting them back to the forefront of their toys. I will eagerly await more movies and toys until you slip again as you did in the early 1990's, but for now .................YO JOE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also have to say thanks to my wonderful, beautiful wife that could care less about G.I. JOE, but supports my hobby. Let the "SHELLING" begin ! YO JOE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last edited by boomer77; 02-13-2010 at 04:23 AM.. |

A very nice message. Yes I too believe the ROC is the best thing to happen in a long time. It will get a lot of kids involved.

I agree with what you say, and I think if this movie had come out in the '80s there would be a lot less hate towards it because it is like one of the animated episodes brought to a live action movie.

i agree with 95% of what you said - keeping the interest in joe alive is definitely needed for us to continue getting new toys. and while there will always be something for us to nitpick at when it comes to something close to our hearts being retranslated onto the screen, i believe that there would have been a lot of better ways the movie could have been done to please a lot more of us. i heard very few complaints when resolute came out. i loved resolute, but sure, i hated stalker's dreadlocks. other than that, i could care less about the other minor quibbles because it was done fantastically. this movie wasn't. but as long as it allows g.i. joe figures to keep showing up on toy shelves, i guess i shouldn't feel too betrayed.

I am glad its getting toys on shelves. Seriously. Love it. I love the repaints of the 25th/ME era that are getting thrown in.
But, and this is my opinion..I may not be an expert but it is kind of what I go to school for and have spent a lot of months and years researching, it was a horrible film. It wasn't the divergance from cannon, or change in story or even the far fetchededness of stuff like sticking electrodes into a cadavers brain to see what he saw, it was the acting, cinematography, special effects, terrible dialogue, worse delivery, horrific editing etc. I hope that the toy line does well enough to keep pumping out the product but as far as the kids are concerned I have a feeling it will be like the Masters of The Universe movie where the kids bought nothing from the movie....even though He-man was actually relevant at the time. For every one person on the GI JOE themed message baords that is digging this movie there are at least 5-10 of them on MOVIE themed message boards who hated it. and as much as it may suck there are more people on earth who like movies than Gi Joe.

And, by extension, we'd all seen it as kids, I think just about everyone would be raving about it (apart from the 12" collectors who expected an "ADVENTURE TEAM" movie" of course)

It is ironic that the fanbase to GI Joe get the cartoon Resolute and the kids get the live action movie. ROC is nothing more than a vehicle to sell more products. Do not disregard the fact that 25TH and Resolute were out before ROC, held their own, and also brought revitalization back to the product line for Hasbro.

A GI JOE comic selling (for example) 25,000 copies a month would be considered a great success, but would barely translate to a decent movie demographic.
