I like, nay, I love that they made GIJoe here into an international force. The title is GIJOE: THE RISE OF COBRA... I'm thinking more and more about it as ACTION FORCE: RISE OF A NEW FORCE SPEARHEADED BY DESTRO PLUS A DARK HORSE-ISH NO-FACE PULLING ALL THE STRINGS
it's a little wordy for a title but the idea works in my mind. even if the movie sucks, some of the ideals behind it have merit! Last edited by night force jazz; 07-28-2009 at 10:29 PM.. |

Rightly or wrongly, another "America saves the world" movie would be greeted with snotty disdain by the international community at large. Look at ARMAGEDDON: We had French journalists moaning that once again "it's up to the U.S. to save us". Never mind the logic that America is the only country with a space programme and it would have to be up to them, it didn't matter. People just saw the trend.
So imagine something like GI JOE: An all US team storming into France (and elsewhere) because the locals aren't up to the job? I'm pretty pro-American but even I acknowledge that in this day and age, that's the worst kind of chauvanism. No, an INTERNATIONAL team makes sense on all fronts. Dramatic and financial...

well that and look what america truly is. we were built by immigration. we are a nation built by the people and cultures of many nations. we are english. we are french, we are russian, we are african, we are chinese, we are the swiss, we are german, we are american. however stepping of my let's give the world a hug crap. it's a business decision. appealing to a wider audience allows more people to view and enjoy this movie. this means more children from around the world will be more inclined to purchase the toys, buy cinema tickets, wear t-shirts, buy kids meals and so forth.

ARAH was never as xenophobic as many of its fans apparently are. Hama's comics portrayed the Soviet Oktober Guard in a generally positive light during the eighties, but because Cold War hysteria was "PC" back then we didn't get them in toy form and they barely showed up in the cartoon.
We've had foreign allies in nearly every modern conflict we've been in. We've all but written the Soviets (who inflicted 80% of Germany's losses) and the Chinese (who tied down the lion's share of the Japanese Army) out of our WWII histories, and barely acknowledge the Brits and Canadians (who between them carried out 3 of the 5 Normandy beach landings). Korea was fought under the UN flag, and numerous nations fought alongside us in Vietnam, Desert Storm, and currently in Afghanistan and Iraq. The military has looked at recruiting foreigners (if they haven't started already) and offering them money and citizenship to serve because there just aren't enough American-born volunteers. This guy gave a very thoughtful interview and I can't believe people are getting all redneck over it. |

This ends now! First of all let me apologize to those I've attacked on this or any other thread. It's your right to dislike anything you want. I fought for four years serving in the air force and spending a solid year deployed in Iraq to ensure that people had the right to express themselves in anyway they choose. I had a moment of nerd rage and blindly took it out on some you. For this I apologize. However let me remind you that the French were our allies in the American Revolution. Without the help of those brave French soldiers and sailors we might have not become the free country we are today. They even gave us one our national symbols, the statue of liberty. My other argument would have to be the 1989 Batman movie. When we were children we absolutely loved that movie. And up until recently that was the definitive Batman movie. But you may remember the huge amount of hate that movie received from the previous generation of fans, my father included in this. We would constantly bicker over what we felt Batman should be. His big argument was always over Michael Keaton's Hight. He hated him for not being 6'2''. And he argued about Harvey Dent being played by Billy Dee Williams. He thought a white actor should play the part. My counter argument were always it's not about race or physical stature. It was about portrayal and the strength of the character. He always argued this wasn't his batman. I said you're right. It's mine. That's what this is. This isn't our GI JOE, I agree whole heartedly. This is our son's, daughter's, nephew's, and niece's GI JOE. And you know what guys and especially you "Haters" I actually don't like the term so instead I'm call you "nostalgia fans" If you were making this movie and casting your chosen actors and writing your script, I'd still be here uploading your trailers, buying the figures I like. downloading your wallpapers, watching your interviews on youtube. and most of all, I'd be defending your movie against the "haters"

Making Joe an international fighting force on the screen also helped ensure that kids (and collectors) in Asia, Europe, south America, and other worldly regions would be able to buy the same toys in stores and in big numbers, because it's my understanding that some international retailers fell all over ROC just like the USA retailers did.

yeah I ended up moving this into it's own thread titled "my apology letter" I was getting tired of the bickering going on and felt the air needed to cleared. but don't take this as an apology for my views or my support for ROC. i said what i said and stick by it to the death. I'm just apologizing for being a dick.

Actually funny story. While I was in the Air Force, I was the only American in my shop. My CO was from the Philippines, my trainer was from Trinidad, My fellow Airmen was Canadian, And my NCO was from Guyana.
