I wonder how many of the "true military" inclined people enjoyed the BATS?

Thank you Grindhead. This is what the Y.J.L. don't seem to understand. They seem to think we want a literal translation of the comic or cartoon set in the 80's complete with the lasers, parachutes, individual uniforms, the land locked freighter, and the weather denominator plot device. All we wanted was a mature, thoughtful, action adventure movie about a American special opts team that's trying to prevent a terrorist attack or responding to terrorist attack. Using the the established histories of the characters with as little deviation as possible.
Though Resolute wasn't perfect, (especially concerning S.E. and S.S.,) it was still recognizable as G.I. Joe. Where as the film is only G.I. Joe in name only. |

One of the things that made GI Joe so interesting was that it was a hybrid of military and sci-fi...veer too far away from one or the other and you lose part of what made the brand so unique and successful. The brand has gone too far down the road into escapist sci-fi and fantasy before with stuff like Cobra-La, and we've seen the results. It's legitimate to worry that some elements are starting to appear a little too Star Wars-esque. Now, it would also be a concern if the movie began looking a little too much like "Black Hawk Down" with too much emphasis on realism, but that's honestly never been a problem before.
Same goes for the toys. Do people think that a scaled down and Joed-out Abrams tank wouldn't sell? The franchise does best when it doesn't stray too far from its roots. |

I dig both updates on CC and the Vipers....about time for an evolution/update; and I've collected 1/18 Joes since 1982 (with a hiatus during college and my early professional career - just had no time or money in that decade....still kept in touch and wished during then)

More and more I read how people...like...figures like any of the movie "vipers" or "Anikrang FriedDoctor" aka Cobra Commander. I'm sorry, I realize that different people like different things but my God! How could anyone be so hot for the crap stains on crap stains. I know, opinions and what not, but I just can't wrap my brain around this affinity towards abominations. I don't mean to stir a hornets nest, but I just want to know if anyone else has the same affliction as I?
Now, Resolute I had no problem with, the figures are upgraded the right way. To bad they couldn't have made a movie based off the Resolute concept. Alot of people like me started collecting cause it brought back childhood memories and they love the vintage look. ROC, doesn't do it for me like vintage and 25th do.

There are certain things I don't get;
I keep hearing alot of tankers complaining about Ripcord being black. Alot of these same tankers would rather see Resolute on the big screen instead of ROC. Ummm forgive me if I'm color blind but I watched Resolute again last night and wasn't Ripcord a black man in Resolute? Also, the other argument I keep hearing is that ROC has diverged too much and somehow tarnishes certain childhood memories.. again forgive me, but isn't the point of brand building to create NEW childhood memories for a new audience?. The ROC figures and whole brand is meant as a hard relaunch for a new audience with just enough in there to hopefully appeal to old fans. Now I like the ROC figures. Some of them I think suck, so I only buy what I like. CC isn't CC to me but he will be CC to a some kid 10 years from now... Much like ARAH could have been seen as sacrilegous to the previous generation who collected the Adventure Team and Real Fighting Man figures.. Last edited by Tyroc; 07-27-2009 at 05:12 AM.. |
