Hi. First time user here. It's cool to be here.
G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is coming, and I've seen that a lot of people aren't happy with the movie. So, I ask: How you you have done a G.I. Joe movie, if you were in Stephen Sommer's place? Which characters? Which story? Which actors? Which vehicles? Which weapons? Which scenes? Which lines? Etc. I'd go with: Duke. Ripcord. Scarlett. Snake-Eyes. Breaker. Heavy Duty. Shipwreck. Cover Girl. General Hawk. and Cobra Commander. Baroness. Storm Shadow. Zartan. Firefly. Destro. Last edited by protocida; 07-19-2009 at 03:54 PM.. |

i would have used more iconic and popular charecters, instead of 4th rate ones like ripcord and sgt. Stone. i wouldn't have messed with the Commanders mask.
And probally scrap the script and start over, or at least rewritten much of it. And no "Yo, Joes" |

First, I would have kept the story more concurrent with what was established with the comic and file cards. This includes relationships between certain characters.
Would have hired a director who is known to have an ability to make a film in the military action drama genre. Some will say this is hind site is 50/50 but the production costume designing would not have been so X-Men/HALO looking. I for one, believe the original costume designs of the characters could have been revamped in such a way to preserve that 80's feel but also been modern in the same way. The DDP was doing a good job in making the old comic uniforms more realistic yet making a definitely homage to the old. I would have kept the foundation of G.I.Joe uniquely American in origin. I feel Hasbro has definitely ignored the to many details and possibly the entire essence as to what made the 80's G.I.Joe so great in the first place. Without these intrinsic details, I venture to say the film may indeed fail. There come down to philosophical judgment calls for the subject of G.I.Joe. I believe Hasbro is merely trying to market this to a global audience so they need to do what they can to get as many happy votes as possible so they have lowered the common denominator to hopefully accomplish this task. I for one had a higher standard. I hope it will be met but I won't know until the show is released!

I'd make the G.I. Joe an international team, much like the movie. A team formed by the best military operatives in the world, reunited under the command of General Hawk to fight Cobra Commander.

Interesting question!
You definately need a 'new recruit' angle... which is from the sounds of things how we (as an audience) get to be introduced to the world of GI Joe - But not sure if Duke would have been my choice - maybe; Tunnel Rat Ripcord Bazooka Lt. Falcon (made perfect sense for the '86 movie) or Clutch I wouldn't have picked Scarlet and Heavy Duty as the 'old school' training Joes (again, only going from what looks apparant from trailers so far) I would have gone for; Duke (played by someone a little older I think) Beachhead or Gung Ho Snake Eyes and Scarlett are a definate, but I think I would have pulled them out as 'big guns' for an impressive reveal mid way through the film - the 'Alpha-Team' who turn up to bail out the newbies. Nano-technology story sounds solid on paper - a proper GI Joe story - Gonna reserve judgement on CC's mask until I see it, but I'm a huge fan of Hama's idea of CC just being a 'faceless American' - he's almost embodies the American dream for me more than the Joes do. I would have liked to have seen that dichotomy put into play - who are the Real American Heroes? Joes or Cobra? But of course there's no way that would play for a summer blockbuster release.

Well, I don't like to toot my own horn, but me and my co-writer made a treatment that Paramount rejected, saying it was "too American". It's pretty dern good too. If anyone wants a copy you can PM me and send me the postage. It's a good read trust me.
We also made a mock soundtrack too. The cast and characters included the likes of. Duke-Mark Wahlberg Scarlett-Jessica Beihl Stalker-Idris Alba Gung-Ho-Stone Cold Steve Austin Snake Eyes- (oddly enough Ray park) secondary Joes Wild Bill General Hawk Breaker Cover Girl (Cameo, no lines) Cobras Cobra Commander- The one and only Gary Oldman Destro- Didn't matter he'd be masked Baroness- Milla Jovovich Storm Shadow-Jet Li Major Bludd- Michael Wincott Tomax and Xamot- (in one scene only) Stephen Sarsgard. Cameo-Firefly Many many cobra soldiers, Battle field in Scotland castle Destro. Pit was in a remote place in Texas. All battle scenes except in Scotland took place in US. It was very old time military, it had more of a platoon, A-Team feel to it, rather than a futuristic look to it. We had plans for a sequel too, it jumps the shark but, we'd have brought in Flint, Roadblock, Shipwreck, and Lady Jaye , and the baddies were going to be The dreadnocks, and at the end Dr. Mindbender. |

My ideal JOE movie would have more story and more about our heroes as people than ROC appears to. Maybe a Tom Clancy script directed by Steven Spielberg. For tone examples, think Marvel's "Operation Lady Doomsday", RESOLUTE, or COBRA: AXIS OF EVIL. ... Maybe add some political drama, but keep some acrobatics by Snake Eyes and explosions with a Hummer or HISS.... Filecards already have what we need for character development, but use it. I do not have many strong character preferences, except lots of our favorite ones....

I prefer to see more Cobra characters such as Bludd, Firefly, Buzzer, Torch, Ripper, etc.

I would've basically made it a fun action thriller, that had FANTASTICAL elements but made to feel real given story context, and setting. It's be the Batman Begins of GI Joe. The team would be proud to sport its American centric theme. I'd ground the team in realism and make them a select and ultra secretive squad within the CIA, that doesn't answer to even the CIA's directors (only to Hawk) ... much like that rumored elite fighting force within the CIA that was created by Dick Cheney immedietely following 9/11 and they answered to him and him alone, and it wasn't until recently that CIA directors knew about it and the team answered to no one BUT the vice president. I'd make the threat of MARS and Cobra very real. Less about fantastic futuristic weaponry and more about dispicable acts of terrorism. On the same token the emphasis for black ops team "Joe" would be less about their futuristic weaponry (which they would sport) but the focus would be more on heart, grittiness, and realism. You'd see some characters die, and there would be actual threat and weight to the events in the film.

D.E.F. vs The Headhunters. For the sake of my story Bullet Proof will nolonger be a black man, but a hispanic woman, and Headman (Shia Labeouf) and Bullet Proof (Rosie Perez) will be ex-lovers / gulf war vets. After the gulf war Headman becomes a gangsta rap mogel who is also an international drug kingpin, and soon becomes the target of GI Joe after a Falcon-like character re-named Duke (Rob Schneider) for the sake of marketing, becomes hooked on drugs sold by the Headman. Cobra Commander will be portayed as a rival rapper who is jealous of the Headman's success, and transforms the Bloods and the Crips into one organization known as Cobra. In the end GI Joe lead by Bullet Proof will win out, destroying the Headman in an epic battle in space.
