It would have the millenial approach from the 80's and keep the futuristic setting and approach.

1. Cast Chris Hemsworth as Duke. Have him already a member of the team. If you really feel like you have to go into the "induction process" use some other canon Joe in a supporting role as the "rookie." (Maybe include another canon Joe losing their life in the opening battle so they need a "replacement.")
2. Cast Idris Elba as Stalker (or if you have to change the name because you're worried about the modern connotations of "Stalker" then just make him "Nightstalker" or whatever), ditch Damon Wayans/Ripcord. 3. Ditch the Anna/Duke/Rex plot. However you can keep the Rex/Duke friendship (It's basically just replacing what they did with Cobra Commander and Snake-Eyes in one of Devil's Due limited series, and re-centering the Joe-verse a bit more around Duke than Snake-eyes, which I think is OK). Anna is the actual Baroness (not via marriage) who believes her older brother was killed by a US Drone Strike while doing humanitarian work in the Middle-East (though that might not get revealed in the first film). 4. Replace "The Doctor" with Dr. Venom (different actor). 5. Keep Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Rex/Cobra Commander, but move him more into the Destro role (as the CEO of "ARBCO.") Destro does not have a major role in the first film. 6. Cobra "wins" in the end through trickery. JGL puts on the Chrome Dome and Cobra becomes a fully-realized organization. Something something Nanites help create Cobra Island which they declare their own nation (since the nanites were basically magic anyway). The Joes "win" by neutralizing Cobra's ability to use the Nanites in the future, though (killing Dr. Venom in the process). The ending is basically the declaration of never-ending battle (war) between GI Joe and Cobra moving forward. 7. Post-credit stinger is Cobra Commander revealing his heretofore "Silent partner" Destro (and maybe a few other Cobra personalities) and an army of Cobra Troopers in more "traditional" attire (of course modernized-up a bit for Hollywood, but clearly recognizable). What’s done is done. No need to dwell on a ten, year old movie. Unless you have a certain infinity stone that can actually really change the pass. Or maybe a Neuralyzer to makes us all forget R.O.C.

HYDRA in the first Captain America movie was what Cobra should have been. But, I've said it before, G.I. Joe just doesn't work live-action. Too close to the figures, and it's ridiculous. Too realistic or gritty, and it's just Tom Clancy. Keep it animated. Resolute should have just been a two hour theatrical release.

The toy line would have crashed and burned before the 50th anniversary.
ROC was not intended to be a nostalgia trip for 40 year old men. It was intended to introduce a new generation of kids to the GI Joe franchise. Updated with a more video game-esque look to appeal to kids who play video games. The 80's were the 80's. GI Joe worked in the 80's the way it did because it appealed to children of that time - just like the 12" version appealed to an earlier generation. |
