I've said this before...I didn't hate ROC or RET.
That always requires some explaining. Was it MY G.I. Joe? No. It was designed to slightly evoke feelings from the 80's cartoon, comic and toyline and yet appeal to and draw in (hopefully) all new (and world wide) audience. So going in I knew the films were not gonna be *MY* G.I. Joe. So as action films I didn't hate them. I can say the say for the Transformer films (except Last Knight that was just God awful) and the Jem and The Holograms movie. All of those films were not necessarily BAD films...they were however HORRIBLE representations of the source material. They were the characters we knew and loved in name only. Had you taken all the Joe elements out of ROC and RET and you probably easily could have...you would have been left with two decent stories about a crack response team trying to stop terrorists. But back to the original question. No. Both films were critical, financial and commercial failures. Re-Releases are done usually for public demand / interest. That can vary from films that are beloved and watched again and again, like Ghostbusters or Back to the Future. Or...sometimes a film that was a commercial failure finds new life in video and becomes a 'Cult Classic' and demands a re-release like A Christmas Story. ROC and RET have neither of those status. IN FACT the only way I could see either getting a fresh breath of life would be via Mystery Science Theater 3000 where truly bad films go to get riffed on for how bad they are. One clarification, though. The movies actually were not financial and commercial failures. They were received poorly by fans and critics, but they actually both made money. Not record-breaking money, mind you. But they did ok at the box office. |

Yeah, I agree. I don't hate the movies either. I can enjoy them as the kind of dumb fun action movies they are.

Not record-breaking money, mind you. But they did ok at the box office. Here's my thing: Neither film was all that bad, IMO. They were painfully average in a lot of ways, but not BAD. There were, however, things they got right: 1. ROC pretty faithfully mirrors the plot structure of any given Sunbow "mini-series" right down to Duke getting captured and the big grand battle at Cobra's base at the end (with Cobra Commander sneaking away). 2. Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow were "mostly right." Particularly in the second movie (Jinx wasn't bad, either, though could've had more to do). 3. The second movie was an improvement in almost every way, despite a lower budget. Even Channel Taters was better in his extended cameo. Of course, knowing what we know now, I have to seriously wonder if the movies might have been a significantly bigger hit with the simple substitution of Chris Hemsworth in for Channing Tatum. I suspect that even "Pre-Thor" he would've been far better received as a younger Duke than "That dancing movie guy" Tatum was. |

Yeah, they wouldn't even be thinking about a Snake-Eyes spinoff if the other two films had bombed.

I just rewatched Retaliation last night. I forgot how enjoyable that movie actually was. Definitely not MY GI Joe, but it holds up pretty well. I remember not like ROC as much, but that was due to the super suits and terrible chemistry between Marlon Wayans and CT, plus the dumb CC twist.

What they did to my boy Flint was a travesty. And where the heck is Stalker?
Can they please set a movie in the 80s? Thats where it really works best. Plus, think of the great soundtrack you could have. Id also like to see it taken way more earnestly. Look at what Batman Begins did for the Batman franchise. If they are making a movie to sell toys then they have already lost. I really doubt you are going to get new kids as fans. Kids of each generation will have their own thing. I dont think too many of us loved what was popular in the 50s and 60s when we were kids. Therefore any movie should be aimed at adults who grew up with it. With lower profit expectations in mind if necessary. |

I have said this before and I will say it again. Before ROC, I only knew about the 12 inch joes from my dad. Sure I've seen sigma 6 Joe's at the store but wasn't really into them, and the Internet didn't really exist in rural America to learn about the 80's joes. However, something about ROC made my 10 year old mind fall in love with GI Joe. Me and the boys (as they say) bought the figures, saw the movie, played the wii game, and watched the movie again etc. When POC came out we were overjoyed! (by this time we had seen the 80's show and read the marvel comics) RET was great as well. Then it pretty much stopped after that. There were no nearby Toys R US for 50th Joes and my friends lost interest. Now and then when we aren't writing papers or studying for exams we will talk about upcoming movies and if there will ever be another GI Joe. So yeah, the GI Joe movies have become a part of my childhood, despite them not being the best films ever made
