Despite the suitcase wedgie I'd no doubt receive for this. I'd actually go with Michael Bay. The depot raid scene early on in THE ROCK was right made me think of Joe from the start.
Also Len Wiseman, who had just come off the first two UNDERWORLD FLICKS, and LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD ! would've been a good fit as well, and delivered something closer to the Joe team as we know them. |

No offense, but problem with Michael bay is because he's misogyny and racist. He's not a bad director but just make random plots.

Those are some pretty strong accusations, but rather than get off-track discussing such things, the intent of this thread appears to be focused on who would be a good director for the film based on their ability as a director. And a case could be made that Bay would not have been a good choice simply based on his directorial decisions in movies he led around the time of Rise of Cobra.

Actually, they had a pretty good director. The problem was the short-time table and writer's strike that basically caused the scricpt to be simplified, and the shooting rushed, for efficiency's sake. It also suffered from too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen compromises. People tend to forget how good The Mummy and other Somer's early work is.
Also, pretty sure we've discussed this already...there's a strong whiff of deja vu around here. I guess there's only so much G.I. Joe one can discuss until we start retreading old topics. Last edited by SmokeBellew; 05-13-2019 at 02:47 PM.. |

Bay does military well no doubt about that.
I do wonder if perhaps there was some reason or stigma attached to GIJOE that he would not want to direct. Of course at this time he was knee deep in transformers so that probably kept him from other major projects that year. I would love to know what Bay thinks of GIJOE as a franchise. Does he view it like many, as a military brand? Does he view it like a toy property, a kids cartoon thing or more science fiction than military? Does he think of it as a military detractor, in other words, something that demeans the true military by its very nature of being "safe." Maybe he was just too busy making Revenge of the Fallen for Paramount to even approach him. Maybe Paramount dropped GIJOE in Sommers lap because they were not all that keen on the script either. On topic here We can play a little hindsight history game to pick a director. Who were the best directors of 2009 films? (subjective of course) but here is a list of potentials from 2009 IMDB: The Coen Brothers Neil Blomkamp (yes please) Spike Jonze Jason Reitman (taking over Ghostbusters now) James Cameron Henry Selick (fresh off of Coraline he could take on a kid's property) John Woo (imagine our two favorite ninjas in Woo's hands) Guy Ritchie Ruben Fleischer, Zombieland director. Peter Jackson, imagine that instead of making The Lovely Bones, he made a GIJOE movie. hmm? J.J. Abrams. What if he turned down Star Trek and went to GIJOE instead? Imagine how that could have changed not just one but three franchises.
