I'm going to go out on a limb and speak for the movie detractors and haters in this thread. It's isn't the accelerator suits. It isn't Marlon Wayans as Ripcord. It isn't the potential for Ripcord/Scarlett romance. It isn't M.A.R.S. eventually morphing into Cobra. It isn't the nanomites or any of the order needless and changes to the continuity.
It's the fact the director and screen writes took a universe with a plethora of stories to tell, ignore those stories, but took familiar characters and a familiar brand and decided to (inexplicably, I may add,) turn it into something else. If the idea was to give G.I. Joe a recon, then why in the hell did they to use characters from ARAH? Why couldn't a story be told with a few of the characters from ARAH was field commanders fighting a new enemy? I have a nephew, was the intention to get me into the movie with my nephew to turn him on to G.I. Joe? Why would I want to spend my few hard earned dollars on something that only resembles what I remember in name only? If the concept of G.I. Joe is strong enough to base a movie on, then why isn't the source material? Last edited by Fred Broca; 07-14-2009 at 01:10 AM.. |

1- Which source material? ARAH? VvV? Sigma 6? Adventure Team? Sgt. Savage? Extreme?
2-Why wouldn't you want to bring your nephew to the Joe movie so he can grow up with his version of Joe and in 25 yaers at the 50th anniversary you two can sit back and discuss the various merits of ARAH Duke vs. RoC Duke. Why does he have to have YOUR version of Joe? He's not worthy of getting his own? 3 - Why would Hasbro go and create new characters when they own the copyrights/trademarks/whatever to these ones? 4- All incarnations of Joe were taking the "original" (and ARAH is not the original Joe) and turning it into something else: VvV, Spytroops, Sigma Six. 5- The one time Hasbro tried to reinvent Joe without any of the known names, it failed.. MISERABLY. That was Extreme. Don't you think they learned a lesson from that?

I think it has more to do with filmmaker ego than anything else. Most directors/producers don't like re-telling someone else's story. They want to put their brand on it. It's like any art. As a customizer, you wouldn't take completely disassociated parts, some putty, and make a figure that looks exactly like Duke v1. You would make it according to your frame of reference and with your own vision. It wouldn't look exactly like the Hasbro toy. That's probably how most filmmakers feel about "source material." Why tell someone else's story, when you can leave your own mark on it by telling your own.
That's how I feel about art.

What about the original 12" dolls? Why is nobody demanding we see the Original Joe on the big screen? Oh wait... they're all in the nursing home with no internet connection to hisstank.com, so they can't gripe about ROC.

Pff, GI Joe is such a sellout. I mean, who are all these new characters? Duke... Cobra Commander... Snake Eyes? What happened to Action Sailor, or Action Pilot? No respect.
Why do people always ask questions they ultimately know the answer to? The phrase "to make lots of money" tends to be the answer to 90% of life's questions. |

For some insight into the director/producer roles, check out this youtube video of Kevin Smith's experience working on a possible script for the last Superman movie, which never got greenlit.
Very cool and funny too! BTW, NSFW... due to swear words. "Who the f**k is Kal-El?" |

It's all evolution baby. This movie will not sway my love for the Joe I grew up with. The Star Wars prequels didn't ruin the original triology for me. The new Astro Boy movie won't ruin the memory of the old cartoon. Transformers didn't ruin any memories for me and the new Indy didn't kill me either.
The 8 to 10 year olds of today love the new Transformers and Star Wars stuff. That is awesome. I would want my nephew to love G.I.Joe as much as I did/still do. |
