So I guess we were lied to by Brian Goldner Hasbro CEO and movie producer in an interview in early 08:
But what about the movie's spirit? Should fans expect to see a live-action version of the cartoon, an update on the Marvel comics, or something else entirely? According to Goldner, Sommers and crew want to take filmgoers back a couple of decades: "Steve Sommers is very different. But he's perfect, because if you think about his movies like 'The Mummy,' it's the perfect action/adventure movie. If you think about what we're trying to do for G.I. Joe, really bringing back that '80s G.I. Joe from the Marvel comics -- those first 155 issues are really our focus. If you think about that, you'll understand what we're trying to get at with all those characters and all the intricate relationships. I don't think you'd see this movie as wacky. I think you're going to see this movie as being inspirational for younger kids and totally in the sweet spot for the guys who grew up on G.I. Joe." Yeah that sounds like they wanted a new direction by bring back that 80's Joe from the comic! as far as new directions, the Dark Knight is a new direction on Batman, and yet it is done by bringing back the characters from the ls comic. wow, those two dynamics can exist simultaneously, and yet you want to claim that they somehow contradict. just one more glorious failure of an argument from our resident expert in glorious failures. wait a minute, I already know how you will counter my post, don't worry: But what about the movie's spirit? I'm sure it's been said before in this thread...but I feel the need to say it again (as these ROC haters really don't seem to get it): These characters have been re-tooled, recast, re-imagined many different ways over the years. This is no different. It's not the first time (nor the last time, by any stretch) we've seen familiar code names play out in a different scenario/reality.
Get.Over.It. I swear...it feels like people hopped on board for the 25e Anniversary line and assumed that nothing had happened while they where away from Joe. That's all well and good...but enough with this circular whining. Last edited by xhairs; 07-15-2009 at 12:55 AM.. |

By the way ,here's the definition of G.I.Joe: GI Joe - Definition of GI Joe at YourDictionary.com GI Joe definition ☆ GI Joe Slang any man in the U.S. armed forces; esp., an enlisted soldier in WWII So ,a foreign soldier who hasn't served in the US military isn' a G.I.Joe, maybe the ripoff bootleg G.I.J.O.E, but not the REAL G.I.Joe.

Dude, I am not saying America is better that anyone else. The very essence of the 80's G.I.Joe is being corrupted to befit some kind of international marketing scheme to hopefully bring Hasblo more profit.
What I say won't change anything. I am just saying it would have been better if they stayed with what was established. Rather than telling us the truth, Hasblo lied and said instead of a NATO group, it was going to be a United States soldier group. Instead, it is a international soldier operation. They have taken the very ideology which makes a citizen of the the United States and a US citizen who adored G.I.Joe and they have turned it into a multinational prostitute in the effort to appeal G.I.Joe to the international audience knowing that US audience will not stomach it. They really won't. I stand for a group of individuals who EXPECT AND DEMAND MORE out of G.I.Joe. Some want to decree racism or anti-islam. Some say Cobra Commander is a member of the KKK because of the uniform design. Funny thing is I thought he was more modeled after Adolf Hitler. You don't even want to mention that because we would be opening a can of Antisemitism! This movie has evolved into a debate of how Hasbro has made RoC into a affirmative action, politically correct, social experiment. This was not the place for this. The movie was supposed to be about blowing S#%T UP! That's all! And I still want to see Duke and Snake Eyes fight it out over Scarlett's affections! |

Question:
Why are so many people defending this movie, espeically people who are keeping themselves spoiler free? It's not like anyone who's ever posted "Rise of Cobra is going to rule!" is going to get a cut of the film's profits. Fact is the movie makers don't give a damn if any one of us like it - all they care about is us spending our money to go and see it. I hardly doubt any of us haters and fan-boys will affect the film's gross, so why do people have such a hard time accepting other's opinions? Now I can see why Hisstank.com and it's moderators have to be remain positive about this movie in order to please Hasbro and keep up good relations; but as for the posters? Nobody is getting so much as a free movie pass or a pop corn re-fill. As for myself? I read the movie novel, the script review and the comic. I checked out the trailers, commericals, and character designs. Based on what I've seen and know, I can pretty much hazard a guess, let me emphasize that - guess, that this film is going to be comparable to drek like Elektra, Van Helsing, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen; meaning after the first viewing? You'll say it was a decent film, but if you watch it more than once you're going to notice it's a flawed, goofy, and messy attempt to make a movie. Does anyone seriously think this film will crack their personal top ten favorite flicks? My prediction: GI Joe will make around $60 million it's first week-end and nose dive afterwards. It will not crack the top ten at the end of the year and movies like 'Harry Potter', 'Ice Age' and 'New Moon' will own GI Joe at the box office. The reason? 1. It'll be too violent for kids to watch. If you read the books, you'll know there are some gruesome deaths and accidents in this movie. 2. It'll be too childish for the sophisticated theatre goer. They'll see it as 'that movie based on the kid toy' 3. It'll alienate a relative percentage of Joe fans. Just look around these boards. 4. It'll be too safe and clean for the college crowd. Not enough swear words, no gore, no half naked chicks, no drug or alcohol references, and not enough sex. 5. Not emo or sensitive enough for the tween crowd. They have Robert Pattinson and Daniel Radcliffe, GI Joe has Marlon Wayans. So there you go. This movie really doesn't have an audience IMO. Of course this entire post means nothing since I believe a large part of us have already made up our minds about whether we're going to enjoy it or not and nothing I or anyone can say will influence those opinions. So it begs to be asked: What's the point? |
