Considering there have been several movies in the superhero genre that have been period pieces, could a JOE movie be set in the 80's and be successful?

Almost any premise can be made into a good movie, however leaning on the GI Joe gimmick would probably produce more challenges than answers to building an interesting plot and characters that a general audience would find appealing.
It can be done, yes, but the first two films were works that failed to please most fans or everyone else. The producers need to pick one of thoese audiences (hopefully the latter) and focus on it.

You can do GIJOE set in any time period. From the past to the future.
Execution would be the key. To steer away from realism, GIJOE's eighties enemy was not the real enemies of the eighties like the USSR or Iran. GIJOE's enemy was a terrorist group with no national ties. Today, reality mirrors fiction. The Cold War is "over" and now the terrorists with no country are the real threat. The eighties, while they are history, are still fresh history. A lot of us lived through them. You would have to tread lightly in how you approached an eighties based script. I will admit, seeing the old technology that was actually future tech of the time would be cool. It would be like "The Wedding Singer" with combat.

I think you have your synopsis right there. Now take it to Paramount and rake in the dough.

Nope. They'd make it yet another campy spoof. Which considering the ARAH cartoon's camp levels, is saying something.

Probably not a good idea. It would really only appeal to an even smaller segment of the general audience than the brand already does.

It was an interesting challenge setting G.I. Joe: First Salvo and G.I. Joe: Honor (both available on Amazon, if you haven't checked them out) in the eighties. Technology has changed so much since that decade that the ways militaries operate are very different.
The only reason I would advocate doing this (for any story) is if the setting served the story. If it were done just for the heck of it, then I would question the decision. |

Would have been awesome to have a Joe movie from the 80's. Writer/director Sheldon Lettich of Bloodsport, Rambo 3 and Double Impact fame was hired to write a Joe film for Warner Brothers in the late 80's.
You could have guys like Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Kirk Douglas or Burt Lancaster as general types then the likes of Chuck Norris, Michael Dudikoff, Michael Biehn, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, Carl Weathers, Van Damme, Steve James, Seagal, Dolph, Stallone, Jesse Ventura, Bruce Willis or Arnold as some of the Joes. Martial arts, squib hits, practical explosions and car crashes, one liners and pre-definition bromance? Could have really been something!

I think they should maybe try making a tv series, smaller budget I know, but it might turn out better than a movie. As Gi Joe has a huge character cast.
