I'm just about done with the movie novel and some parts I liked, but other parts I hated.
Stuff I liked? Oh, btw: MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD. 1. Heavy Duty making a kung-fu grip reference 2. Ripcord saying "Don't you recognize a real american hero when you see one?" regarding Duke 3. General Hawk saying "And knowing is half the battle." 4. Zartan, Storm Shadow, Breaker, and Hawk all seem pretty faithful to what we remember. 5. Cool origin for Destro as to how he got the name and how the mask plays into his family's past. 6. A Joe actually dies: Cover Girl 7. The Vipers seem very bad-ass. 8. Cobra Commander seems very well done, despite not being anything like what we've seen. What I didn't like? 1. Ripcord hitting on Scarlett every 3 pages and at the end? Scarlett does seem to reciprocate. As for Snake-Eyes? She tells Rip she likes him as a brother, and that's all. 2. This Baroness is nowhere near what we remember from any canon. Her engagement to Duke, Cobra Commander being her brother, and Storm Shadow was her sensei in the art of ninjitsu. At one part? She even saves Duke. 3. Too much reliance on the term "Next Gen" to explain away all the sci-fi weaponry that is everywhere in this movie. The accelerator suits in particular. 4. Duke seemed kind of wishy washy. He was presented as a man tortured by his emotions instead of a hard ass battle commander, while Ripcord seems to be the predominant character in this movie. 5. The story makes the Joes seem kind of inept. Cobra easily discovers where their base is, kills a bunch of personal, takes the warheads (that are the McGuffin in this film), destroy the Eiffel Tower... I mean c'mon! lol Overall? It's a shame because as you can see, there are things I liked in this film; but the negatives (namely anything involving Ripcord) kind of outweigh them. I think there are going to be a lot of Joe fans that end up hating Ripcord. |

From what i am reading on here......they might be setting up the sequal in a way that the Joes see that the stuff they tried in this movie was the wrong approach to what they are dealing with. It can be explained in the next movie to do away with the suits and that they learned from their first experience with cobra that they underestimated what exactly they are dealing with. they learn from their mistakes and set up a secret base in DAYTON to better hide and wear non issue clothing to better hide their Joe affiliation. I mean yeah if they are seemingly inept in this movie there is a way to move on with lessons learned and prepare a return to the Joes we know and love growing up with. It can be explained in a sequal the dislikes we all have for this movie now. It kinda seems that they are seeing that advanced tech is not the way to fight this new terrorist threat and see a need to return to the old school(ish) war tactics with gloves off to defeat Cobra!

It's a shame, because you can see the makings of what could have been a damn fine movie here. Ignoring the black body suits and everything, the attempt to fit GI JOE into the real world was handled pretty well I thought. It made sense the way it was presented. But what will ultimately sink this film, at least in my opinion? The needless butchering of certain characters back stories, the 'Star Wars Episode One' need to explain how everyone is connected somehow, and Marlon Wayans as Ripcord. I can not emphasize just how annoying I found him in the book, let alone how it'll be watching him on screen. This is really a movie about him and Duke joining GI JOE, with everyone else just kind of hanging around in the background. Snake-Eyes is the only other Joe who seems to get any kind of action besides those two, and his scenes mostly revolve around Storm Shadow. |

I think there are going to be a lot of Joe fans that end up hating Ripcord. The really fucked up part this is if the G.I. Joe brand wasn't attached to this cluster fuck, who knows, it might have been a decent movie. I stated before that I honestly believe that in it's inception that this movie wasn't G.I. Joe. It was something else entirely and the project was hijacked and bastardized into something else. I would go see this shit at a matinee but I don't want to encourage Hasbro and Paramount for their arrogance, stupidity, lack for sight, and and total disrespect for the the fandom. I'll go see a G.I. Joe when they make a G.I. Joe movie. Last edited by Fred Broca; 06-30-2009 at 03:21 PM.. |
