In 1982, G.I. Joe returned to children as a toy in an entirely new format because it was marketed TO CHILDREN via a comic book, then an after school cartoon mini-series, and then a full-fledged cartoon series, and with every step of the way, the message was: buy our toys!
Thirty five years later, Hasbro has a new method they want to try out: the Hasbro Studios partnership with Paramount Pictures to create a five-property movie universe. In a recent June 14th issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine, Brian Goldner said that Hasbro is a profit participant with Paramount Pictures regarding the G.I. Joe franchise. While we all know and accept that the only new G.I. Joe toys will be those that are reflections of some of the content of the next film and logically in an entirely new format, the G.I. Joe film does not seem to be making any attempt to sell those toys (if they should ever get created). And what will Hasbro do in the meantime? Make no G.I. Joe toys at all. Because the new toys cannot possibly compete with the toys of the previous 35 years, they will make no toys at all. Unwise. Rather, it will be an attempt to fill seats at movie theaters. The targeted age group for those seats are not going to be shopping the aisles for toys. Will their children see the film and want toys? Maybe. Hopefully. The adults that discover there is a G.I. Joe movie playing at the cinema might go expecting some sort of nostalgic experience, but will feel so lost and alienated that the film will probably be rejected by them. Remember how many of Paramount’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra audience asked for a follow up film to learn if Cobra Commander (Rex) and his sister (Baroness) resolve their issues with Duke, their closest friend? Almost none? Why not? Because they alienated their adult audience… In the next film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, they tried to achieve a greater success by drawing on more nostalgic memories than did the first film with a lower budget and a higher reception at the box office. So did they attempt to sell more toys in the Retaliation line than they did the Rise of Cobra line? No. Because toys sales were not deemed as important as ticket sales were. And now the next film is no longer even intended as a sequel, but as a platform to tie together other future films to form their new cinematic universe. Again, unwise. They will alienate their adult audience, like Universal Pictures did in 2015 with the film Jem and the Holograms, which ultimately grossed only $2.3 million worldwide on a $5 million budget. So if the next G.I. Joe film (the foundation that ties together the new Hasbro cinematic universe) utterly fails like the Jem film did, how can anybody at Hasbro expect to introduce children to a new line of G.I. Joe toys? I look forward to reading your thoughts on this. Last edited by sevenlima; 06-19-2017 at 11:23 AM.. |

Without Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Channing Tatum or Bruce Willis officially signing a multi-film deal with Paramount, we won't see another G.I. Joe film. I wouldn't hold my breath for another film or cartoon series for the brand. Hasbro has told us repeatably that there's just not enough bandwidth to allocate proper resources to the Joe brand to make it as successful as it should be. If anything does happen, it will be a half-@ssed attempt like the last two films just to make an extra few dollars before the end of the year for Paramount and Hasbro.

It's a little bit unfair to call people "idiots" because they based their opinion of a movie on the version they saw in the theater. For better or worse, that's what Warner Bros. decided to release so THAT'S the movie. It has to succeed or fail based on that version. If you, or anyone else, prefers the ultimate edition, that's fine. But whether or not the ultimate edition "should" have been in theaters is irrelevant. The point is, it wasn't.
It is weird to me, no not weird, puzzling, to me that the best DC stuff is the animated versions, which did not need to "build a universe" at all. Perhaps Hollywood thinks kids are smarter than adults and don't need everything explained to them and just readily accept why these people are working together. The Mummy decided that they needed a team now to fight monsters instead of us just accepting that those legends exist. I would have much rather seen a mummy movie with a nice post credits scene than all the silliness. As far as Tom Cruise belonging to an occult? I think the positive reaction to his announcing Top Gun 2 negates that statement. No the Mummy suffered from bad word of mouth once people saw just how badly done it was. It also suffered from Brendan Fraser's movies. Those were the last mummy movies people saw and this was nothing like those (Thank goodness)

Outside of what Marvel has done, all this cinematic universe building is just lazily done. None of these studios really want to take the time to lay the groundwork, and the results are evident. The only reason DC is getting away with it is because of a fairly well established mythos that most American audiences have a passing familiarity with. I don't suspect Hasbro is going to exercise the patience Marvel did- coupled with the fact they they've struggled to put together good movies of their properties that weren't connected to a bigger universe.

Oh my these "geniuses" are so lost that the only thing that could have connected the generation that grew with Jem the song is not even used in the trailer. Come on! I think a Jane Doe who grew up with Jem could have made a better version than the Hollywood "geniuses". |

First of all, I think Hasbro moving to a shared universe is an excellent idea. I believe this will have a two-fold effect on the toy lines:
1) Limited shelf space. With a shared universe, you won't have a potential overlap in similar products (like Transformers NEST characters and G I Joes). It "compresses" their product lines and helps ensure maximum use of shelf space. 2) The toy lines will be "interlocked". If they fully integrate these toy lines successfully in film and television, they will also generate interlocking demand. a Percentage of ids who would be interested in only in Transformers will also be interested in G I Joe - and vise versa. Essentially, each toy line can ride the shirt tails of another in mutual promotion. The key to all this will be a successful integration of all of these themes in movies and TV shows. The taste of the American public is fickle and often poor. It is hard to predict what we will like and what we will not. When it comes to the next movie, it will have to have a good story, with good human interaction - which requires all the other good elements like good acting, directing, etc.) - otherwise, this will all be moot. |

You know the sad part about this GI Joe Transformer crossover?
Why didn't they just make GI JOE the military organization in all the Michael Bay Transformers movies? Would make introducing GI JOE characters within the movies easy. It's not like Paramount and Hasbro Didn't have the rights back then. Food for thought and a completely missed opportunity in and of itself regardless of quality. |

Yep, 100% agree. Everything Hasbro execs have mentioned in interviews points to this.
