that's exactly the movie I was thinking about. Speed Racer looked awful, but when I saw it not only did I like it, I thought it was pretty great. but how could that be, if an opinion of what I think it will be is the same as an opinion of what I think it is after seeing it. clearly the two exist independently, just like a movie can look great but be awful. the new Friday the 13th for example. that's why you can't form an intelligent opinion about a movie you've never seen, just an intelligent opinion on whether you think you may like it or not.

i too hope to be proven wrong with the gi joe movie. i want it to be great! i just don't hold out much hope at this time.
oddly enough, i too avoided speed racer for a very long time. only recently did i sit down to watch it with the kids in full surround sound on our big tv and i actually enjoyed it. all kiddyness aside, it has it's moments and the music/racing is enjoyable. the dvd extras about the individual cars was worthwhile to watch as well.

Yeah but I trust the Wachowski brothers to make a good movie way before I trust Sommers to...

While that may happen, I've rarely read a script, studied the preliminary photos, scoured the net for any preliminary info, had a lot of knowledge about preproduction, read interviews with cast and crew, or had much of a personal stake (I admit the term sounds mellow-dramatic, but it's been a long day and I don't want to search for a better term) in an upcoming movie. That separates the two situations. If all I've ever seen is one preview, I've had some pleasant (and unpleasant) surprises when viewing the actual movie. But in this case, I have a lot more to go on that a simple preview, so I still say an informed, intelligent opinion can be formed.

I've seen a million previews, and thought that they looked bad.. And once that opinion is formed, its very unlikely that i'll ever give that movie a chance. People form opinions based off previews all the time. If GI Joe was to turn out to be any good at all, then they certainly haven't done a very good job at marketing the film. A preview is the films sales pitch. I've seen nothing that has resembled GI Joe.
Why is it that marvel comics can get it right on 90% of the movies they've made. But hasbro keeps bombing out, while many would say that transformers was good, I'll disagree with that one too. It had good box offices sales, but that doesn't make it a good movie IMO. That crappy indiana jones movie had good box office sales, but the movie was still crap. I hope the movie is a million times worse than the previews, I hope the word spreads fast, and I hope the movie tanks worse than water world. Hollywood doesn't care about making good flicks, they only care about lining their pockets. Problem is people are sheep and they'll flock to anything, and thats what the producers are hoping for...The last time I honestly seen a good movie had to be the lord of the rings.

First and foremost there is no such thing as a good or bad movie once you really truly understand that its all about opinions. Take for example three movies from yesteryear: Taxi Driver, Rocky and Citizen Kane. Great groundbreaking films that paved the way for countless directors and cinematographer's around the world. You cant find many movie buffs that would not enter these films in their top movies of all times.
But to the Reality TV generation we have now, these films are slow, boring and mundane. They would not even consider them as great pieces of film let alone understand their importance in cinema history. I know a young woman that will tell you that the Harry Potter films are the greatest films in cinema history - EVER! That is her opinion and nobody will ever change that. She has already decided that the next film is going to be even better than the last one and when the film comes out - she will be correct. Her opinion has already been made. Will she come to this conclusion based on being biased, yes but its her opinion. Now the argument seems to be, can someone say that a film is horrible without ever seeing it. Sure they can and here is why. Its an opinion based on what they like and don't like. So for example if I don't like Nic Cage - just because I think he is a horrible actor and plays himself in every film he is in. Guess what, regardless of his performance, the direction and or box-office performance I will only see Nic Cage in every single film he is in therefore I know prior to stepping foot into the theater (for whatever film he is in) that I wont like his performance and or the film cause I don't like Nic Cage. Since I know what I like and don't like.... I am not going to like this film! Is it closed minded and naive, hell yes. But its still what I know. I have a friend who does not like fish. She cant stand the site of fish or the smell of it. She as well as a lot of people associate Sushi with fish when any educated person can tell you that you that is not the case. But for her, the mental association is enough for her to gag at the thought of eating Sushi. To her its fish plain and simple. Anyway I convinced her to try a veggie role and she became ill. Why? She associated it with fish and therefore convinced herself that she did not like the roll. It was purely mental. Nothing I could do or say, and I tried would change her mind that she would not like that roll. Again was she being closed minded, yes. Did she let her preconceived notion of the roll cloud her judgment - of course. So those who are trashing the movie solely based on their opinions will not change their mind. A movie is an experience that you either like or dislike. There are no in-between. You cant kinda like a move no more than you can be kinda-pregnant. You go to the movies or you rent a flick and you either like it enough to recommend it to others and or praise it or you don't like it and you tear it apart and mock what you didn't like. A person who does not like the accelerator suits and or feels its to sci-fi or the fact that the movie takes place in the future (per the last version of the script) and have deemed this movie crap of this - will not change their mind. Its crap, why cause they know it does not have what they want. You don't have to experience something to know you don't like it....period. It all boils down to personal preference and what you know you like or don't like. |
