The thing with the GI Joe property is... there is no "George Lucas" looking over the entire franchise. Gene Roddenberry didn't own Star Trek, but Paramount allowed him to look after their franchise. GI Joe for good or bad, belongs to Hasbro... a corporate entity. It would have been nice if Hasbro gave the franchise to Larry Hama to oversee... but they haven't. Good point and very well put. In the end the corporation will look after their own interest and their investors. It's just smart business afterall. The rational side of me understands this. The emotional side says they could have crafted a movie that would have been more accepting to the older fans but gained a new following as well. This would keep loyal collectors buying while also gaining sales from a younger generation. I'm not against change, just how the change is undertaken. Certain story lines could be altered that would modernise the joe mythos but keep older fans. Instead of being Vietnam vets, Iraq war vets. Instead of Delta accelerator suits, keep it more reality grounded. I think we all agree the upgraded resoute uniforms were VERY well executed. I'm for change, just not a complete overhaul!

Honestly the story is not what has bothered me so far it the Character design. The vipers just look goofy. They sort of look like a turtle...... and what happened to Cobra Commander? I am looking forward to Destro though. I loved the first season of the new Doctor Who. He was great in it.

I was excited by the casting of Christopher Eccleston, too. He does a great job of moving between charming and menacing that I think could suit Destro well.
As for the Vipers...I'm not 100 percent on the design, though I don't think they're as bad as some folks. If you really look closely at the masks, they're actually designed to look somewhat like the scale patterns on a snake's head, and the armor looks somewhat like a snake or alligator's belly. I totally get the "turtle" references and can see it too, but I think there was definitely an attempt made to make them look "snakelike." The results just might not have been what they wanted. |

I'm going to go into the movie and give it a fair shot. We've had plenty of versions and backstories for these characters before and 1 more can't hurt if it is done well.
Corba Commander i would have liked to look more classic, but I just myself can't see how that would work in this more realistic movie. These are real people acting, it can only help the story to see their faces somewhat. As the Doctor he looks bad ass too. I will agree that without seeing the film the Vipers do look kinda lame. Hopefully on the big screen the look will work. Destro, Baroness, Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes, and every other Joe look pretty much spot on as they should. And the whole American vs. Global force thing falls under the same lines. Alot of what G.I. Joe does is illegal, or would be uner miliatary laws. So they set this up in the prequel novel, the world governments created an independent secret force (that is led by former US miliatary and mainly U.S. staffed) that could operate around the various international laws to stop global terror. This is basically what the real U.S. government did with the terrorist prisons, if they aren't technically in the U.S. that opens the whole playing field as far as what they are allowed to do. Same with why the U.S. in this new continuity seperated G.I. Joe from itself. |
