The new station is not just Hasbro. It's also Discovery Kids, and I doubt they're going to allow an "adult themed" show to play at any hour. It's simply not the kind of station they are. Nevermind that Resolute playing at an hour the kids can't watch defeats the purpose of trying to grow the brand. Hasbro is never going to "settle" for just the adult collectors. They're always going to try to get the kids.
That's a good point that I'd never considered. Online sales are almost certainly made primarily by adult collectors. They're the province of the "niche market" and therefore not a good way to gauge a line's potential for growth. And that's the key...growth. Hasbro does not want just adult collectors buying ME forevermore. That's not good enough for them, because they're a business that wants growing brands, not stagnant ones. Even if the movie flops, Hasbro will just keep reinventing and rejiggering G.I. Joe until they create something that does finally rope in the kids. Your "people" must either be blind or not pay any attention in the toy aisles. Unless you're claiming these folks are adults that don't buy any other toys, but would magically make an exception for G.I. Joe. A group that I would wager are a pathetically small demographic. |

All I'm saying is that I wish the marketing for the 25th line would have been handled better no matter if it was a lead-in for the movie products. One look at these message boards will tell you that the marketing of the 25th line certainly didn't curb the skepticism about the movie or it's corresponding toy-line coming from adult collectors and even though we've had our complaints, the consensus on the tank is that the movie will not live up to OUR expectations as opposed to its box-office receipts. I, for one, am giving the movie the benefit of the doubt until I actually see it and make my own call. And I'm sure that we can all agree that if we always listened to critics, we would have missed some very good films in our time. I remember 'Scarface' with Al Pacino was a box-office bomb, too...

...But if it weren't for sites like the 'Tank, I think the exposure of the 25th line would have been almost non-existent.

The 25th stuff is/was marketed just as much as any other toy line out there. You just don't see commercials for toys anymore, not like you used to.
So saying Hasbro should have done what they did in the 80s is just wrong. It's not the 80s anymore. Hasbro is going to do what the current market trends are, which is no commericials. Are there Transformer toy commercials? Star Wars toy commercials? Lego commercials? I don't see Hot Wheels commercials like I used to. i never noticed there aint commercials, cus i watch discovery an history channels more then anything, an havent thought of a toy untill 08. if i seen something that was cool like the collectors edition joes in 2001 i got them cus of nostalgia, much like the new joes, my collection is based on nostalgia. if it wasnt for that, i wouldnt be buyin a toy period. like the hordak i just nabbed woo hoo... but to make things boom commercials are where it's at. if you have a company, say a builder, an no sign on your vehicle, how the hell ppl gonna know you are a company or what you do, or contact you, or think of your company when they need something built. sure word of mouth is good too. but you cant primarily base business off word of mouth.. you will be sitting home with no work, you have to advertize to get sales. be in the face of the masses much like the music on the radio. an majority of sw an hw buyers are adults anyway. kids want ben10 or whatever that crap is. adults dont need commercials, kids do. the way kids think today is cus how the corperate world wants them to be an think.. kids dont just wake up an decide ah that toy's gay. if it has a commercial, or cartoon backing it up, an lil jack down the street has it, billy too will want it. much like music. hip hop for instance. what you hear on the radio kids eat up.. why? cus that's all they know an are brainwashed by seeing a vid or hearing a song once every hour for four hours continously into 24 hrs. you put on some real shit they dont know what the hell it is an dont like it, cus it aint commercialized. they need to bring back commercials. it's only commen sense that, that is the way of big sales. if it wasnt , we wouldnt have bill boards, phonebooks, an horrible music on the radio.. |
