If the studio nixed the idea immediately upon reading the script and finding out he wanted to cross the properties, that's the opposite of "almost happened."

Sorry but you can't bank a movie on nothing but 40 year old adult toy collectors. Nevermind that there's nothing about the Joe Franchise that specifically demands it be set in the 80's, unless you're refusing to accept anything but a shot-for-shot remake of Sunbow or Hama's comic run. Quote:

As to a G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover, I will always be opposed to the idea until such time as the Joes are on equal footing franchise-wise. Cramming them into a Transformers movie now just means the Joes would be supporting characters for the Transformers (ie second bananas). I even bet the toys would be designed more for Transformers fans than Joe fans (lots of "human alliance" type toys...very little 3.75" offerings, especially since you aren't really going to get Transformers in that scale except for maybe a motorcycle or other small vehicles. |

It's too late to mix these properties now, without total reboots of both. The time to do it was at the end of the first movie when Optimus was giving his voiceover and showing the endings for all the characters. They should have had Josh Duhamel and Tyrese meeting with Jon Voight, and creating a new agency that works in the open, instead of in secret like Sector 7 did. They would be G.I. Joe, and would take on the code names Hawk and Stalker or Duke and Ripcord or whatever they wanted.

Either which way DePriest decides, I hope both he and Weber keep the toys coming; beyond the decision. Toys R Us 50th figures can remain the little tug boat that keeps the line going; till the big reboot of both toy brands.
If they decide to bring a final film, I like to see some multi-packs; 3, 5, or maybe one big 8 pack like Rogue One's at Target. Love to see a few rehashed club or convention figures sneaked in the multi-packs. Make the arguement to retailers that this is the grand finale film. Hopefully that will somehow enable Depriest + Weber to bring us a great amount of figures. |
