Duh! Hasbro is a business, I'm not denying that. I've actually been to Hasbro and I can tell you first hand that the employees care about the consumer. Of coarse all businesses need to make money. The SRO packs were and still are 15$ each for three figures. A single carded figure is 8$. The SRO packs save people money, same with the comic packs. The DVD packs are a unique idea. They could have released the 25th figures in a different style packaging and most collectors would have still most likely bought them. They did the retro packaging for the nostalgia freaks who would appreciate it. I think the intent of the comic packs, sro packs, and dvd battle packs are so there's more products being put out there so if someone who wanted to get a lot more figures for there money they could. The fact they even made certain characters and included them in the packs shows they care for the fans enough to make and recreate them in the first place. If a kid had only 20$ and was to buy some GI Joe toys what would he most likely purchase? Two single carded figures or a DVD pack with four figures and a bonus DVD. It's convenient to certain consumers. Collectors aren't the only ones who buy toys.
I see every ones point with the slogan. I can't argue with most of the stuff pertaining to it. I just wanted to say that I'm OK with changing it and why. However I don't think it's right that fans actually believe Hasbro doesn't give a crap. They have to have everyone in mind. Me too. When Spytroops and VVV came out I didn't like them too much because they were different. But it grew on me. Some of the new stuff I like and I'm beginning to like some of the new interpretations. I'm now looking forward to the movie and video game!

Honestly, the international composition of the team is the least of my concerns. I don't mind if a few characters have foreign accents. As some posters have already said, G.I. Joe was marketed differently all over the world. In Europe it was "Action Force," an international team. In Asia it was "G.I. Joe: International Heroes." The fact is, to much of the world, G.I. Joe IS an international team. Those outside North America who remember G.I. Joe will remember it as an international team.
I'm far more concerned about the fact that this movie is a lame X-Men ripoff with the tone of "Batman and Robin." It's a Mel Brooks-style superhero parody, not a G.I. Joe movie. |

If a movie is going to cost 100+ MILLION dollars, you had better hope the international market likes it. (You know, the market where the other 95% of the people live)

I may be wrong with this one but I have been reading the prequel book to the movie and have come across some disturbing stuff.
In the beginning when preparing for a mission General Hawk and the Joe's refer to an operation and state that "The Americans are sending in a force". I find this a bit disturbing because I have always thought of the G.I. Joe team as an American force. Look at all the publications out there and it is thrown in your face at a pretty large scale. (Example: Issue #1 with the Joes planting the American flag, and the Stars and Stripes figure box set. HELL Look at all the vehicles sitting on your shelves and you will see a USA, or American flag sticker somewhere on them. The G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra story line has replaced this American flag with that Joe Eagle thing and refers to the G.I. Joe team as an "International Force". This pisses me off to know end! I am pretty sure that the term G.I. Joe is an American coined phrase and I believe that they changed all of this so that they could cater to other countries and make it "FAIR" for everyone. (No offense to the other countries) I just think that it is kind of a sell out on Hasbro's part for doing this. Maybe this is a sign of the times or maybe they just didn't want to offend anyone. I just feel kinda ripped off. I want my joes to be American based and operated! This is what they mean by keeping it faithful for the fans. I honestly do not mean for this to be political in any way, shape, or form. I just feel like they sold out for the all mighty dollar. (Currency for all the other countries) Just ask yourself if you would find it disturbing if they had been referred to as a French Force, Canadian Force, Middle Eastern Force, or even Chinese Force. I think that everyone would have been able to handle the G.I. Joes as an American Force without really getting all pissy. We all collected the figures in different countries back when they had American flags on the vehicles, didn't we? I know the Action Force folks may disagree with me but maybe they will get there own movie some day! On a side note: I am looking forward to this movie and will see it regardless. It just kinda makes me that much more unattached to this particular story line. the motives are the same, so it is hypocritical to applaud one as noble just because you agree with it and criticize the other as selling out because you don't. G.I. JOE is a product, and will always be tailored to cater to the environment it is part of. so, if it is selling out now, it as always sold out. you can't have it both ways. |

Budget estimates put this movie at $170 million or more. You hit the nail on the head... overseas ticket sales better be huge.

Another point:
I was looking at the G.I. Joe Movie site (2009) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra | Official Movie Site I just noticed (For some odd reason) that the new symbol is an Eagle with a star. The Eagle is also pretty much an American symbol isn't it? Just a thought. |

I like the idea of GI Joe being a collection of the world's best soldiers. I could see GI Joe starting out as an American task force, but slowly expanding to a global one. The Joe team could piratically be their own country if they wanted, nobody can beat them.

Not only that! Who would G.I. Joe answer to if they are international?
If it is an American force than they would have to answer to the U.S. Government. Who is in charge in the movie story? G.I. Joe running around internationally doing what ever the hell they want to! I don't know.....Just doesn't seem right! |
