Well no, we're a country. When people from other countries who live in other countries work together, that's an international force. Making an action figure franchise international would probably gain a bit more acceptance for the franchise. I didn't say that because people in our country are of different nationalities that our US army should be called an International force. What's the big issue any way? So what; a toy company wanted to make their action figures appeal to children from other countries. That's not selling out, it's caring for all the consumers. I love the USA just as much as anyone else but I have no issue with a toy line making their product more wide ranged. It doesn't mean there aren't Americans on the team. It means there's people from other countries on one military force. What's so bad about that?

Honestly, with all of the changes they've made over the years, and continuing to add characters, they could've just created international characters (more toys!) that fight for freedom with G.I. Joe. G.I. Joe is the American faction that fights for freedom, and they team up with allied factions from other countries that fight for freedom. If it was truly about creating a new toyline for all the world to enjoy, then they should've specifically made new characters from other countries so those kids could have their own toys with familiar regional backgrounds. But what does the movie do? They change the backgrounds of the Joes. And to please who? Other countries? No. To please the apologists in our own country. I'm so sick of the politically correct jargon.
If this movie was filled with a bunch of all-new characters from other countries, fans would be complaining just as loudly that "It's not G.I. Joe! Where's Roadblock/Heavy Duty, Breaker/Dial Tone, etc... etc...?!?!1!? ZOMG why are they making up all these lame characters when they could've used the great characters that were already there??!?!" (And you know it). If this movie cast was comprised of Duke, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Red Star, Big Ben, and Back-Stop there would be similar complaints. If they shoehorned these characters into "token" roles (say, flashing to the October Guard fighting a bunch of Cobras for ten seconds) it's not really going to accomplish the goal of actually involving characters the international audience might get behind. Not to mention being confusing for the audience that doesn't have a freaking clue who the October Guard are (read: anyone that's not a pretty hardcore Joe fan). Where the fandom is concerned, it's a no-win situation for the filmmakers, because international box office is critical to the overall success of big-budget films now. The "stated" budget of $170 million doesn't include advertising costs, or a multitude of other costs associated with the film. The film would probably have to make $300 million domestic (unlikely even with an "All RAH, All the time" cast of characters) to actually turn a profit. So yes, the changes are exactly to cater to other countries, because Paramount wants/needs their money, too. I mean seriously, do you honestly believe that Hollywood is so stupid that they don't think that "non-apologists" go to movies, too? Seriously, this "politically correct" excuse that people are throwing around isn't some agenda by the moviemakers, it's trying to balance out the movie to something that can appeal to the largest number of people possible, both in the US and abroad. From a story/character perspective that might not be a good thing because it leads to "genericism", but from a moneymaking perspective it's the smart play. The big movie studios don't continue to exist by being big risk-takers. They want "apologists" and "uber-patriots" alike to come see the film. They want everyone in the world to come see their film if it were possible. They're not going to deliberately cater to one side at the expense of the other, and that cuts both ways. Wow, One of the more whiney threads so far. Not american waaa waaa. Mass appeal is more understandable than American appeal. Earth > USA ...we'll all unite when the martians come anyhow...

dmizrok. Ridiculous.
I'll go into a toy store and I see American military type toys all over the shelves. You make it sound like that's a bad thing. Wow, I'm more likely to buy WORLD'S GREATEST MILITARY TOYS . . . uh ok. Nonsense. |

You're an American, and you want American(ish) toys. If you walk into a store and see "A REAL PAN-ASIAN HERO" you're not likely to be interested. Now reverse that...if they're French or British or Japanese and they see "A REAL AMERICAN HERO" do you think they're going to be interested? Probably not. So now the line isn't ARAH anymore. It's something with international influences to hopefully get international audiences and toy-buyers interested. Or at least get them to give the line a second look where they might not have before. I don't know for sure if other nations have as many "homegrown military" toys as the US does to compete...though you don't exactly see the multitude of US military toys flying off the shelves even here. Thank you Lmacq1, thats what I was getting at...An Asian (or ANY person from their home country) would be more likely to buy a figure if it werent blatantly glorifying a DIFFERENT countries military.
and yes, ID be MORE likely to buy WORLDS greatest military figures than ASIANS greatest military figures. TheVileOne, question: when you stop in the toy aisle, do YOU see American military figs or do you see lines dedicated to ANOTHER countries soldiers ?

I don't have any issues with this being an international team. I think times have changed a lot since 'Joe was launched and the popularity of the property has really expanded.
