Ouch, if they had definitely stayed with the American theme they would have gotten more support from the DOD. I'm still goin to see it no matter what.

Kinda says it all to Hasblo don't it. G.I. Joe "A Real American Hero" has less to do with our American military than mechanical beings from outer space!

Ouch... Still, this is what happens when you change a subtitle. You know, they could just have easily called it Real American Hero here and marketed it as differently elsewhere... Just like usual. You fix the rest with editing and foreign dubbing.

Well for one thing Micheal Bay has always portraited the military with respect and accuracy in his movies. Bay's movies are pretty much commericals for the Military.
As for Hasbro & Paramount: "Don't fix what ain't broken" I agree with SEJN, 'Ouch... Still, this is what happens when you change a subtitle. You know, they could just have easily called it Real American Hero here and marketed it as differently elsewhere... Just like usual. You fix the rest with editing and foreign dubbing.'

“When I spoke to the producers, they said they went about looking at G.I. Joe as not wholly American; they wanted to appeal to the international audience, so they decided to create an acronym, and the acronym was GI JOE,” Ogilvie said.
According to the Internet Movie Database, the “G.I. Joe” plot was changed to make the unit American instead of an international team based in Belgium after negative reaction from fans and servicemembers." so they are or aren't American? This confuses me. Last I heard the joes were the Global Integrated yada yada yada. So did they change the plot BACK to making them an American force? SEJN speaks much truth. As much as I really would like to see this movie, I can't help but think..."Hmmm who greenlighted this project, and how quickly should they be fired." You know what makes a good movie? a good script with competent actors. I really do think that for the most part (sorry wayans) the have assembled a competent group. But the way they have changed so much of what was really good about Joe and moved ahead without listening to the outcry of fans, only to try to cater to fans on other points late in the ballgame really is distasteful. "If you are going to screw up then screw up consistently. At least then I will know what to expect." They should have had their own office at the DOD during this one, instead they end up with minimal support. perhaps they should change the subtitles to: G.I. J.O.E. Mismanagement of a Franchise |

This is very true, my brother-law has friends who helped worked and consulted on the 1st TF movie. Micheal Bay loves working with the military...

Michael Bay has worked in coordination with the military exponentially more times than Stephen Somers has, that's a key element to keep in mind. Somers wasn't using Navy SEALS, Apache helicopters, an aircraft carrier, nuclear submarine, F-15 Strike Eagles, Abrams tanks, et al, in the Mummy, Scorpion King or Van Hellsing.
Yet Bay used the military for TF1, The Rock, and other movies. I don't think changing the team to an international team made any difference. The article states that there was a vehicle that Somers and crew wanted in the movie, but at the time it was being sent overseas to fight. The other thing they wanted to use was a training center. Also, most of the vehicles seen in the movie are not current vehicles that the military is using now. The USAF does not have anything like the Cobra Gunship. Hell no one does. So that explains the limited military cooperation. Also the movie takes place 10+ years in the future. If the movie took place in present day, maybe you could see more military cooperation using current vehicles. |

There is no verification of this rumor yet, however. It may not be true. It seems likely that some changes were made from the preliminary script that leaked online. Additionally, G.I. Joe did get DOD support. They just didn't get as much DOD support as Transformers 2 did. As Shin notes above, given that G.I. Joe doesn't use current military technology, they didn't really need that much DOD support to begin with. |
