This is the typical response...here's the typical rebuttal:
Transformers was not about the US military, it had the US military in there as secondary characters (Secondary characters that spent the first half of the movie getting blown up and killed, I might add). Transformers also wasn't marketed or "sold" on the basis of the US military presence in the film (most of the advertising that showed the military aspects showed them getting blown up/running from the bad guys). Transformers was/is about giant transforming robots from another planet carrying their ancient war to Earth. G.I. Joe doesn't have that to fall back on. It's about G.I. Joe vs. Cobra. So to try to make it more appealing to international audiences, they've tweaked the G.I. Joe team to include international members. Maybe it'll pay off, maybe it won't, but it shouldn't be surprising, nor is it automatically a bad business decision. Beyond that, G.I. Joe includes American military personnel too...but folks seem to like ignoring that aspect of things. |

Yeah- but Transformers was pretty much drenched in U.S. Military garb and looks like the sequel will be too....That being said, the first movie didn't get hurt in the international box office market. I just find it so strange that Hasbro shied away from the U.S. Military aspect in G.I.Joe and yet had a strong U.S. Military presents in Transformers- which wasn't even part of the original theme. ???
The US Military in Transformers were secondary/plot moving characters. They put the Cube in the Hoover Dam and had Sector 7 formed to deal with it, that meant the US military would play a part. It doesn't mean the movie was about the US military. They could have just as easily made it an unnamed/unspecified military force and the movie wouldn't have been affected. It's like comparing Apples and Watermelons.

I think a lot of folks also discount another problem with adapting a "straight" version of Hama/Sunbow: The movie ends up becoming "America vs. a bunch of crazy foreigners."
Think about it...while Cobra Commander is (depending on the origin) American, he's surrounded by a bunch of foreign nationals as his chief lackeys/henchmen: Destro - UK Baroness - Eastern European Storm Shadow - Japanese (Yes, American Dual Citizenship, but I doubt that gets mentioned) Zartan - Ambiguous, but filecard strongly suggests European, possibly French (Believed to have attended St. Cyr) Major Bludd - Australian Basically it ends up looking a lot like "America vs. the World." Do we really think that's going to play well overseas? |

It also makes sense, even from the original ARAH version, to make Joe international.
Cobra is a "terrorist organization determined to rule the world". Why would the force that is charged with taking care of Cobra be American-Only? Joe should have been multi-national from the beginning. The Joes should have been a UN-backed organization from the start. It only makes sense. The Joes were covert because, for the most part, they were operating in foreign countries without approval and were therefore illegal.

Well, seeing as how Transformers is set in present day, and the G.I. Joe movie is set in the future, mostly using vehicles / planes / etc that don't actually exist, I don't really see the argument. If G.I. Joe was set in present day using current military equipment (like Transformers), then they would have worked a lot more with DoD. Since nothing in the movie (as far as we've seen) exists, there really wasn't a need to work with the DoD on anything. Much ado about nothing.

The question is especially moot since the Joe team in the movie is also "American-led" (General Hawk being, presumably, American). Last edited by Jmacq1; 05-28-2009 at 11:35 AM.. |

Yep, the fact that it's "not wholly American" is what bothers me a bit but i'm still waiting and expeciting to see a great flick
