Reboot. Classic Joes and Cobra (ARAH toys colors/uniforms)), story in the '80s.

A novel needs to be written and then hire a skilled screenwriter to adapt it into a screenplay.
Not a throw away movie novel either, a real novel, perhaps even a series of novels. One thing the Force Awakens proved was that audiences like to see familiarity. Vehicles, uniforms, all consistent with what is recognized as GIJOE. Modernized perhaps and toned down but instantly recognizable. Chemistry and conflict between characters should be key. Steer away from homages, Easter eggs, and bad dialogue. No cringeworthy lines like "Kung Fu grip." Don't pack every Joe and every Cobra into the movie. Do what makes sense. Seven characters and two of them have an arc. (Hey it works for Trek) Tell the story from one POV only. Similar to Deadpool. Everything we see happens around that main character. Base your subplots around that main thread.

I might get shot here but I liked the World War III story arc that was done several years ago, maybe adapt something along those lines for a movie. Several locations, focused on a core group, but you know there is a huge group all around the world without having to wonder where is my favorite, a new character that acts as a POV, a core group of Cobras (though in this case swapping the Plague out and putting more mainstream enemies in that role)

My reference to TFA was about the look and feel of the universe, not anything to do with story.
Lucas said in an interview around the time of TFA that Star Wars was about more than ships. The audience and their craving for familiarity and nostalgia, disproved his opinion. Star Wars TFA dominated SWCE this year in cosplay, themes, and the overall feel of the convention. Basically what I am saying is that to capture that nostalgia, a WHALE in the next movie needs to be instantly recognizable as a WHALE. Just like the Falcon had to be instantly recognizable and a return "home". I was referring purely to the visual aspects of TFA and how successful they were at capturing the eye of a new and old audience at the same time.
