For examples of the exact opposite of anything I would want to see in the next movie, take a look at what ace Hollywood writer Akiva Goldsmith had to say in a recent WSJ interview.

If the movie focuses on the original 12" action figures instead of Joe vs Cobra, then I'm ok with it. Especially if it's just a set up for Joe Colton and eventually modern Joe.

“...a new version of M.A.S.K., the 1980s-era secret-agent series, that doesn’t feature the adult superspies seen in the cartoons but rather a multicultural group of youths in Detroit who come upon “magic technology” similar to what fans may remember. “That’s a story relevant for today, but if you remember the cartoon or the toy, we trigger your memory and you take a look,” Mr. Goldsman said.”

The sheer stupidity of these studios, especially when you consider this is Hasbro, not just some dumb suits dealing with someone else's property (ahem, Fox-Xmen, ahem), is mind-boggling. What you created worked and spawned a massive following for decades. Why change it?

I would love a complete reboot. An emphasis on the sci-fi element with all the outrageous vehicles, B.A.Ts and cobra operatives like Dr. Minbender, The Dreadnocks and Tomax and Xamot. Additionally, the characters should be similar to their cartoon/comic book/action figure depictions. The first film had actors that could have been any G.I. Joe character because they had little resemblance to their classic looks.

Thanks Hasbro. Once again you let Hollywood take a crap on the franchise.

Sci Fi theme for the next Joe movie?....sounds like fun! Or the WWII story showing how we get to A Real American Hero. A metal gear solid approach of linking events together over time with a few characters being involved from the start. Lots of possibilities, but I ain't worrying about it It will either be a good movie, a great movie, or well you guys know the rest

According to the newest info on the front page, Hasbro is now unsure if the two existing Joe movies will fit into their new shared universe. I'd say if they're unsure, that probably means they won't fit in and a reboot is in the cards. Which I'm totally fine with.
I actually enjoy both Joe movies for what they are. They're big dumb action movies and that's how I take them. But they're only barely G.I. Joe films. They each have moments that feel like they belong in a really good Joe movie, but they never quite get there. |
