I can relate though, I work with a bunch of pop culture idiots, wouldn't know a proton pack from a Vulcan from a wet fart. We are the keepers of the sacred knowledge.

I think it's hilarious that a lot of people that are more than old enough to remember both can't tell the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek. Or don't realize that they're separate franchises.

there is a way. Currently I am in college, studying film studies, with the intent of being a teacher. What led me to this decision is that when I first entered the program I took a couple of specialized theory classes on subjects like Vampire films and apocalyptic cinema. The teachers for those classes persuaded me that I should go to be a teacher to spread the gospel of pop culture in this format. Part of it was because I was upset that people didn't know stuff like the difference between Start Wars and Star Trek....and had no appreciation for the greatness of Mad Max.

I know what Hasbro has said about ROC and how its success will effect how other GI Joe lines do, but I call BS on this one.
Suggesting I have to pay for crap, in the hopes that some day I might get something I will like, is spurious. That's like Mcdonald's saying, "I know you all like Big Macs, and I know they sell well, but we've got the McRib, so if McRibs don't sell well, Big Macs will be in jeapardy in the future. So buy McRibs." What? That makes no sense. Why cut off a money maker cause your new product sucks? If anything, ROC will be reduced in production and ceased entirely if it sucks, while more resources will be put into the other lines that people actually want. Last I checked, the 25th ann/modern line was selling just fine without a major motion picture backing it. Bottom line, if ROC stinks, it's a clear message to Hasbro: we don't want it. By buying ROC products in the hopes that some day they may or may not give us what we want will only a) give no incentive to Hasbro to give us what we want. b) only give Hasbro justification to churn out more crap. Hasbro should heed what has happened to GM and Chrysler, and actually listen to the market wants, not try to dictate what the market should want. Veiled threats won't work. How about we do this: If the product sucks, don't buy it. Force Hasbro to give us what we want. In this economy (or any for that matter), there is no way I am paying for things that I don't want. Personally, I can live without Joes if it came down to it. They're just toys. My plastic crack addiction will find another toy line. Hasbro, on the other hand, can't live without my money, so if they want it, give me what I want. We're the consumer, remember? We're ultimately in charge. |

I'm surprised that colleges aren't teaching "Nostalgia studies". I mean they have classes which examine the music of Bob Dylan, and I don't think 80s pop culture is that far off.
