This is the question of the day.
With the revelation of the latest Transformers movie teaser, Forbes and Nerdist writer Luke Thompson's keen eyes noticed that the new Transformers font bears a striking resemblance to the blocky ROM font. Also the title the last knight could be a veiled reference to ROM himself a space knight. In addition Optimus Prime's eyes are no longer autobot blue but purple. Purple is a Dire Wraith color. TRANSFORMERS 5 Has Title, Teases Possible Hasbro Cinematic Universe Crossover | Nerdist Of course anything is purely speculation at this point. So if Rom is going to have to battle Dire Wraiths alongside the Transformers will Dire Wraiths be the common thread throughout the Hasbro Cinematic Universe? It does make sense. The Dire Wraith's main character trait is that they take over human bodies and disguise themselves in their bid to rule the galaxy. Could they inhabit the metallic bodies of Cybertronians as well? This could create very interesting stories in the GIJOE universe. Particularly since you already have a shape shifter in the Cobra ranks. GIJOE is used to having someone around who is not who they seem to be. Could the Dire Wraiths take over the minds and bodies of a legion of Cobra troops? It is a possibility. Will GIJOE troops be given neutralizers instead of machine guns? Will GIJOE have a new sub team dedicated to finding and dispatching Dire Wraiths? Who would be on the team? Would they go into battle with Rom at their side? Another common thread is Akiva Goldsman. Now DiBonaventura did produce both GIJOE and Transformers so having the same producer alone is not an indication that the universes will be combined. However, with the recent news that Akiva is in charge of the writer's room and that he is producing not only Transformers The Last Knight, but also ROM, Mask and Visionaries, all for 2017 It is not too much of a stretch to think that Goldsman is in those meetings to make sure there is a bit of continuity between all the films.

I'm not sure who the new sub team would be but would imagine Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow would be a part of it for sure LOL

I'm sure the Knight reference, connected to an image of Optimus Prime, has nothing to do with what was established in the prior movie with Optimus being a Knight of Cybertron. That would be too direct a connection.

Dire Wraiths do seem like a strong candidate to be the "glue" between the Hasbro franchises.
That said, I still don't buy that a font means that Transformers is now part of the HCU. If Transformers is part of it, there's literally no reason for them to not simply say that it's part of it. It'd give their new cinematic universe an immediate hype-boost to have it connected to an already-successful franchise. I'm still going with "Paramount ixnayed including the Transformers in it." They don't want to risk the successful franchise being dragged down by Hasbro's hail-mary play to become the "IP company" they keep claiming they want to be above all else. |

Hasbro Trademarks Dire Wraiths For Comics - Will Marvel Comics Challenge It? - Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movie, TV News
I thought Marvel owned the Dire Wraiths, since ROM was pretty much a blank slate before the Marvel comic tie in. They have showed up in X-Men and other places since then. |

Hasbro bought out Parker Brothers in 1991.
Parker Brothers made ROM. It was an odd thing at the time in 1979 for a board game company to make an action figure. We were treated to an exclusive ROM as a Mighty Mugg in 2014 at SDCC, which was the first time in a long time he has had a toy incarnation. No. Marvel only licensed Rom. They never owned him. The only question is how much of the stuff from the comics belongs to Hasbro and how much is Parker Brothers/Hasbro.
There was a prototype of a Dire Wraith toy but it was never produced. That still might give Hasbro enough wriggle room to claim them though. Generally speaking licensing agreements say that all the stuff created by the licensee as part of the license actually belongs to the licensor, too. Last edited by Jmacq1; 05-19-2016 at 04:52 PM.. |

From Rom, Spaceknight Action Figure
"The Rom comic book was based on the large action figure sold by Parker Brothers around 1979-1980. The concept for the figure was created by Bing McCoy. He sold it to Parker Brothers, who was looking to branch out beyond the board game business at the time. McCoy had initially called the cyborg "Cobol", after the computer language. Parker Brothers renamed him "Rom" and redesigned his look, but the concept, as patented by McCoy (off-site link) and the fact that he was a cyborg, remained the same. Parker Brothers also came up with a brief outline of Rom's back story, which they used in a promotional video shown at the 1979 Toy Fair. This video made Rom a member of the "Solstar Order" in "a galaxy far, far away." It also named the Solstar Orders enemies, "the evil magicians, the Dire Wraiths" who could "assume any form they wish." This video was shown to folks at Marvel Comics, who eliminated the Solstar Order name but otherwise fleshed it out. Parker Brothers licensed Rom to Palitoy in the United Kingdom, where he became part of the Action Man line. The Palitoy box had a different graphic design and included a one-page, black and white comic." This implies the name Dire Wraiths was created by Parker Bros., But Marvel fleshed it out. Interview with the creator says this: "RSR: Early interviews with the comic book's creators indicated Parker Brothers came to Marvel with the name "Dire Wraiths," but had no idea what a Dire Wraith might be. Was that a name you created? McCoy: No. I did not create the name. Parker Bros. pretty much took it and ran with it. Then Marvel took over the story line." An Interview with Bing McCoy Full interview is interesting... |
