For decades, the way it worked was, for the most part, the media came first, then the toys.
Lone Ranger, Howdy Doody, Batman (comic), Superman (comics, cartoons, tv series), Flintstones, Scooby Doo, Space Ghost, Dukes of Hazzard, Star Wars, all had media before toys. It was only after the media proved itself and became popular that the toys were produced. Then the tide shifted and the toys came first and the media supported the toyline. Now all of a sudden you had a plethora of toys that needed media tie ins. Hasbro, Mattel, Kenner, were breaking new ground. they needed Hanna Barbera, Filmation, Sunbow, DIC, and others to do what they had no clue how to do. Make a cartoon. What do you do? You find people that are knowledgeable, trust them to make a good product, or in some cases, a product that is just good enough to get the name in the public eye. So why can't Hasbro make a good movie tv series or cartoon? You have studios that know their ways of making movies works. Studios that may not know anything about the thing they have been hired to write about. Hasbro is not in the business of writing stories. They need outside sources to write, produce and distribute for them. Even though they have a ton of resources right at their fingertips from established relationships those are still outside sources. So even though Hasbro may know the story, background and characters, those they hire, may not, and will have their own opinion of how things should be done or the story that they want to write. It is not easy to become a successful media company. It won't happen overnight and it will always be risky. That's entertainment. There are relatively few successes. Think of all the movies made that don't get distributed versus the few that make it to the level of being shown at the multiplex.

The problem is there isn't a fan writing the movie. The MCU and the Berlantiverse works, (especially The Flash) because the showrunners and the writers have an intimate familiarity with the source material. These guys grew up reading it and in the case of Jeph Loeb and Geoff Johns, they went on to write it. One of the reasons as to The Flash is the arguably the best superhero show on t.v. is because the Flash is Geoff Johns favorite superhero and he treats the show as his baby. Even with Ryan Coogler with Creed. Coogler grew up loving the Rocky franchise with Apollo Creed being his favorite character. His idea behind Creed what if Apollo Creed had a son? Long story short, the fore mentioned films are essentially fan films with a budget and S.A.G. members.
The JOEs have yet to have this. Yeah the prior JOE films had the budget and the actors, but it lack producers and the director that understand and appreciated what made ARAH so popular for the three decades. What a JOE project needs this a creative team that understands that JOEs are a character driven property, they're very nuanced, and they work best when the team concept is in play. Scarlett, SE, SS, and Stalker have a history. C.C., the Baroness, Destro, and Billy have a history. Tell it. That what's pisses me off about the decision making involved in this JOE project because the opportunity is being blown at some great story telling. I bet if I were to read some JOE fan fiction, I would read some shit that provide a better basis for film franchise than the shit we got or the shit that's being planned. I keep using CC as an example, but I want to know exactly what compelled a man to the point where he felt as if he had to resort to an armed struggle against the world's most powerful military. Why is he so ruthless and how did CC come to be a man without scruples? Elaborate on why Duke refused his commission and why he feels that an officer's duty is to compel others to take risks and accept responsibility in the event of a total catastrophe. I know that Hasbro backed away from it, but let's see Zartan's schizophrenia and how it effects the Dreadnoks. Let's see how Cambridge student Dick Bliken went to Australia to research biker gangs only to wind up in one. I want to see Zarana using method acting to get close to her target and not leaving tips, and Chuckles, Shana, and Lady Jaye on a deep cover assignment. I'd also like to see Lady Jaye using that wacky javelin and Scarlett using her throwing stars, crossbrow, and slingshot. The JOES have some many stories to tell just based of the little info provided on the file cards, those stories just need to have to opportunity to be told.

Hasbro's biggest problem is finding the balance between kid-friendly enough to sell toys and mature enough to get teenagers and grown-ups to show up for the movie(s).
Marvel's about hit that perfectly, but it's NOT an easy thing to get just right. Otherwise every movie would be doing it and there'd never be any underperformers or "bombs." Another thing Marvel does that explains a lot of their success is that they hire the right people (writers, directors, and actors) and they get the hell out of their way. They trust the people they put in place to make their movies. I'm not saying Disney/Marvel execs have no say in their productions, but it's clear watching those movies that it's a collaborative effort between the writers, directors, and actors, and studio interference is kept to a minimum. Maybe Hasbro hasn't figured this out yet. |

Fred Broca's opinion is right-on. He must have his eyes on G.I. Joe Headquarters!

1. A ruthless terrorist organization that's determined to rule threatens human freedom either with some sort of doomsday device, coordinated attacks around the around the world, or e-terrorism. 2. Realizing that as currently constituted, the Joint Special Operations Command isn't enough to deal with this new level threat. As a result a decision is made to bring together the Army's finest, (if you're going to go with the OG13,) or the military's finest to deal with the threat. 3. Figure out what you're going to do with the film. If sabotage is involved insert Firefly. Using tanks, insert Steeler and include a little cute part where the Baroness tells C.C. she wants training on the H.I.S.S., C.C. tells her no that she's too valuable of an asset to have running around like Rommel in Africa, but the Baroness tells him if he doesn't allow her to get training on the H.I.S.S., she'll just have Destro do it. Political spying intrigue plot, utilize Scarlett, Lady Jaye, Chuckles, and the Sieges. I keep telling y'all, the JOEs (rather ARAH) isn't relevant and the easiest way to make it relevant is to make a film geared to the core demo and adults. It can, but this would be a much harder film to make and a harder sell. Thus going back to that age old argument, is that something the causal fan would want to see. Quote:
Yes you can. This is like saying that you have to make a Superman film where's he's Superboy and has Krypto for a pet dog. On that the Legion of Super-Pets has to be in the DCEU, or Egg Head, King Tut, and Bat-Mite have to be in a Batman film. Certain things in the JOE lore need to be left alone. Like everybody being able to fly a plane. Fatal Flurries, G.I. JOE The Movie version of Nemesis Enforcer, C.C. stressing his s's, and I dare say Serpentor and if you do have Serpenator, he definitely can't be in that suit. Here's the thing about the Joeverse and the intangible thing that made it work. Though there are scifi elements involved, the Joeverse is more grounded than you think. Seriously, it is. The suspension of belief with the JOEs isn't that great. The JOEs, (including SE, SS, and the ninjas,) do the improbable, not the impossible. Though I like dude's channel and immensely respect his opinion in regards to the JOEs, comics, and entertainment in general. I have to disagree with Strydent when he says the JOEs are the superheroic version of the military. They're not because if they were, you get Cap. They're just group of highly trained individuals that are insanely good at what they do. Quote:
That movie should of just went balls-to-the-wall and introduce a new version of G.I. JOE to a new group of fans. Quote:

Hasbro's problem is that they're trying to sell army men instead of focusing in on creating a new revenue stream.

It's not that I'm right-on, but rather the JOEs and COBRA story is an incredibly easy story to tell. You have comics for source material, and if you don't want to use the comics, you can build upon what's in the file card.

Those characters are operating in world with has aliens, magic, superhumans, and comsic powered entities in it. The JOEs operate in a world that kinda mirror our own with the exception that have plausible developmental tech with may or may not work right. For example, Flash's laser is subject to overheating, the S.N.A.K.E. armor is to slow, cumbersome, and vulnerable to surface-to-surface missiles, and rear attacks. Not any more, The Joes are no longer alone in the universe. Transformers, MASK, Visionaries (magic) Rom (aliens) Micronauts and whatever else hasbro decides to pullout of their vault of 1500 properties are all now one universe. Hasbro's problem is that they're trying to sell army men instead of focusing in on creating a new revenue stream. Now that Hasbro has teamed with Machinima, many things are possible in the storytelling arena. They already have fan driven content with Kindle Worlds and that is a large part of their new strategy. They mention it every chance they get. In other words, they are going to lean on us to create more content for them. They will focus on the larger picture. I mean why not? Fan driven content is free advertising for them.
