It's come out as a huge conspiracy theory. They hire bad writers and directors to write and direct bad GI Joe movies, thus establishing a downward trend in the popularity of the series and, in turn, the brand; this would serve the purpose of devaluing the brand and, once it reaches a certain level, investors from southern Uzbekistan stand poised with briefcases of money to swoop into the Hasbro offices to acquire the GI Joe brand for pennies on the dollar, as the property has maintained some significant degree of popularity in Uzbekistan under the name of "Fleet Bodega Invader Defender Force Quarto Alpha." In addition, Uzbekistan will license the brand in Japan as a series of themed pachinko machines and automated coffee vending kiosks.
This comes from very trusted sources.

I think it's the fact that Hasbro wants the brand aimed at kids no matter what; even though it's based on SOLDIERS carrying DEATH MACHINES, they want the brand to stay kid friendly somehow.

There is no single reason movies turn out bad. These movies involve huge numbers of people and might have dozens of writers and producers involved at various stages. Trying to pin down a single individual as the sole reason for a movie's success or failure is often impossible.
I don't think anybody actually goes out of their way to hire a "bad" writer or director. All the anecdotes I've heard indicate it is basically the same as hiring a person for any other job. They looked competent at the time, but if they screw it up there's not much you can do but avoid hiring them again in the future. OP asks about writers and directors, but remember that these people are at the mercy of the producers. Go watch Kevin Smith's interview about the time he worked on an aborted Superman movie: Kevin Smith is one of the people most qualified to write a superhero movie, but the producer's demands were so bizarre that he comes off sounding mentally ill. Smith could have turned in the best "Superman" script ever written, but it makes exactly zero difference if the producer makes unreasonable demands. (For a more recent example, check out "Avengers 2." A highly qualified, fan-favorite director still had to include stupid nonsense because the producers wanted it to tie into every single other Marvel movie, whether it made sense or not.) My last point is that the folks who make these movies have little reason to bother with hiring great talent. "GI Joe" is not exactly Shakespeare. It never has been and it never will be. Meanwhile, Michael Bay craps out Transformers movies that are, without a doubt, among the worst films ever made... And yet each one makes hundreds of millions of dollars. The last two TF movies made over one billion dollars worldwide. That "worldwide" part is important. The people who make these things actively work at dumbing the product down to the lowest common denominator. This doesn't mean to imply that Chinese audiences are stupid, but rather that it is very, very hard to make a complex and emotionally thoughtful movie that appeals across cultures. Ever wonder why everything from "Transformers" to the "Avengers 2" has to include an action scene in a Chinese metropolis? There's your answer. So my question for you is: If the dumbest movie of the year can still make a billion dollars, why would anyone bother trying to improve? |

We can generalize, but the specific reasons for the first movie failing involved the producer and director being more nostalgic for pre-ARAH Joe, and misfiring on the Joe vs Cobra legacy. Since that set the tone for the second (where the creative staff and director were more connected to ARAH) it messed up a lot of things they should have done. Also Chu was better at putting together individual set-pieces (see Red Ninjas and the mountain) than a cohesive film. Rise of Cobra is a better, more cohesive film, but it gets a lot of Joe "wrong."
The plus side is that between the two films, in isolated moments, we got a lot of the best Joe stuff and iconic bits. There was just a bunch of junk, too. |

Are these directors or writers people who worked in the business before?
