The last good movie from the waynes brothers I saw was "i'm gonna get you sucka". And dennis quaid is a d-bag in my book, but can be a decent actor. Again I may see this if I do not pay for it (except for gas to or cable bill). As for the sci-fi vs realism debate, the insane design concepts are at least rooted in realism, that's one of the reasons I loved joes, that and the points of what is best about being American heros (individuals working in a team to best fit any situation vs. facsist and/or communistic dicators and mercs while collaborating and/or opposing forgien counterparts). But this just seems to be squeeze cheese, sure it seems good at first, till it gives ya the runs. And I am human so I am making a judgment now with little information, I do not hold myself so high to think I am above being petty while talking about my love of dolls. Especialy when I found the resolute cartoon to rock my socks off and gave me what I have been wanting since the gijoe animated movie soooo long ago. But now to ruin my credibilty I also was a fan of cobra-la, so I am no stanger to "the hope of change". But that was an attempt to explain cobra in a amusing way to me, a capitalistc facsist off shoot of an end road of the socialistic enviromentalist utopia and plus I love the idea of cobra comander being a genietic scientist with a million eyes on his head. Made the mask make sense. And the pathos! "such melancoly melodramatics...take him away." what a great line! Damn I hate spelling! COBRA!

I'm a Gi Joe fan (obviously since I'm posting here), but having been out of the hobby for a long time, I've not really formed an opinion about the movie and how it relates - or doesn't - to what has come before.
Then I just saw the trailer. I thought that it started well, with the menace of Destro, firing of rocket etc and that the fall of the Eifele tower, though typical hollywood cheese was well executed. Dennis quaid - thene appeared, along with his team of of by the numbers hero types, all looking more 2D than any of the comics ever have and the accellerator suits (will appeal to 5 year olds only, dreadful can't-think-of anything-better) came on. Usually, I stick with my first opinion. THis one is a DVD night in for me. |

I've actually been rethinking my entire position on this movie. Once upon a time I thought it would be an epic failure for many, many reasons but, having seen the numbers pulled in this weekend from Star Trek, I now pray that GI Joe turns out to be a HUGE success. The last thing in the world I want to see is a GI Joe movie beaten out by some geeky Star Trek flick. So, in response to the OP's question, I don't think GI Joe will suck at all. Once you get past the accelerator suits, the international focus, Wayans ripcord, Cobra splitting off from MARS, etc. then perhaps this movie will be the best movie of all time. Ok, maybe I won't go quite that far but I do want to see this movie do well now. If for no other reason than to say we were not beaten out by the geekfest that is and always will be Star Trek.

Stephen "I have yet to make a decent movie" Sommers.
He is the master of taking really good ideas and making them into world class trash. oh yeah, and everything in the movie other than Snake Eyes looks DUMB.

I saw Star Trek yesterday. And Liked it.
Obviously I can't compare the two properly until Rise of Cobra hits Cinemas but so far... Director - JJ Abrahms does a very good job with Star Trek, Sommers.... Well the Mummy was OK, Mummy 2, Van Helsing, not so great. Story - The ace in the hole for Star Trek was an excellent story, at once rebooting the series, yet also linked definately in whith what had come before. It think that this is where Gi Joe will suffer. So far, the plot looks join-the-dots simple and the suits smell of a serious lack of ideas and imagination. The actors - THe new Star Trek reminded me of the first Star Wars movie, talented newcomers with plenty of energy, ably supported by veterans who have been around for a while. Eric Banna is excellent as Nero. Rise of Cobra has a cast of B movie extras. THe only veterans in sight being Dennis Quaid (last good moive being Inner space) and Doctor Who (actually looking good as Destro). That said, I think that the moive will do big business in the states, but will die elsewhere. If I had to compare it to another movie, it would be Independence Day, big, loud, massive special effects, idiotic retread story, fun for 90 minutes then forgotten forever. As always, just my 2 cents. Colin |

I've made it a point not to prejudge this movie. I will see it for myself and THEN pass judgment...
